Okay, so a big majority of us here work with the creative side of writing, but what about the formal side? You know, the side where all of those essays you have to do for school fit. Do you like essays? Which side do you enjoy more, the creative, or formal side? Which one do you feel is more important to learn? Discuss!

Depends on the topic I'll write the essay about. If I like it, there's a high chance I'll enjoy writing it and put a lot of effort on making it pleasuring for me to read.
I enjoy the creative side more than the formal one, but that doesn't mean I don't do a lot of research to keep things detailed and concrete. I feel that both sides are equally important, and if you're already good at writing one of them, there's only practice to be good at the other one.

The thing I most commonly write is lab reports. Which basically means scientific articles, except they aren't getting published of course. I've had to learn how to format, word and strategically present procedures, research and results on chemical problems and experiments. Not too far into the future, I'm hoping to get something published in my name in some not too shabby magazine. It's what means something to a scientist, after all. So for me, it's more essential that I learn to write these things well. But personally I want to write creatively just as much.

Interestingly enough, all my formal, academic writing is done in English. Not Swedish :)

I prefer creative writing over formal writing, but I feel like I'm getting better at the formal side.

In school, whenever there was an essay assigned, I was always the first student to complain about it. I just found essays so boring and tedious. Now that I've written a couple essays just for fun, I'm starting to see the light on that side. I feel like I've gotten a lot better at it too.

I think that if you've gotten the hang of either formal or creative writing, the other side comes much easier.
