Hello everyone,

I am very interested in creating a hack, but I honestly have no clue where to start or what kind of software I would need or anything. If someone could please help me out in how to get started it would be well appreciated. Thank you very much!

Please post threads in Beginner's Lounge instead of ROM Hacking for any questions you might have. You could start by looking around the Tools, Tutorials and Resources section. There are plenty of tools to change almost everything in the games, and tutorials with instructions in case you're unsure on how to use them. My advice would be to get a map editor such as Advance Map, if you're planning on hacking 3rd generation games, familiarise yourself with map editing and then from there look for tools and tutorials on how to edit other elements of the game.

Thread moved.

The most important part of hacking is the maps. That's where you should start. Advance Map is pretty straight forward but there are tons of tutorials on it. I would also recomend Advance Trainer to edit trainer data, NSE to edit sprites and an Overworld Editor. If you want to edit Pokemon, you should download YAPE too. You really only need about 5 programs to start with. If you want the hack to be alot more advanced then you should try other tools. Hope I helped.

You should start scripting. That's what I did. I think scripting is the most important thing in a hack because I suck at mapping they make the hack what it is, a game would be terrible (unless it's not a major hack) if it had new maps but old scripts. Also, I suggest not using Advanced-Text, get XSE to start scripting, and look at these tutorials:
http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=279345
http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=164276
Mapping is also important, but I just think scripting is what you should start learning. Your choice though. And don't get advanced trainer, get Jambo51's trainer editor, or Kurapika's since they have inis. NSE is a good program like the guy on top of me mentioned. Also, don't get YAPE. Get G3HS, it is much better, and you can even expand the amount of Pokemon in Fire Red, and also you can actually repoint movesets unlike in YAPE where you are restricted to a number of moves. I have a folder full of hacking tools that I could put here if you want.

First of all get the basics of Advance Map it's a basic tool and almost every hacker needs it learn basic mapping.

Also I'll recommend you focus on scripting use this tutorial of mine in scripting really helpful for beginners. http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=279345 Once you got there larn some of the advance stuff from diego's thread herehttp://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=164276.

Sadly PGE's not up anymore but if you can get it, it's one of the best tools out there with the compilations of everything you need. For Pokemon Sprite inserting I suggest you use Wichu's Sprite Editor and UNLZ for other sprite inserting. Now for editing pokemon data use YAPE or the pokemon editor in PGE though I recommend PGE more :D

Wait, PGE isn't up any more? Why not? Well if you need a link, I zipped my copy and attached it.

Anyways, I'd honestly learn to start with the logistics before anything else. Learn to insert images, learn a little hex editing (repointing data is an important one, as well as stuff like making a table etc.), learn about extracting or inserting tile sets. Really, just start with the mechanical basics.

One you learn how to do everyday stuff with the rom itself, then you decide what exactly you want to do with your hack. Do you want to make a new region? Are you looking to remake a game from a different gen, or expand one of the Gen III games maybe? Do you want new moves, or to change currently existing movesets? Figuring out what you want out of your hack is the biggest part of figuring out what you'll need to know.

PGE is not up because Gamer2020 took the download link off, I think.
