What do you guys do for a living? Are you working in your dream job or is it something you are doing just to get by? Are you in school instead? Do you like your job for the most part or do you dread going in? Is there anything interesting happening in your job now? Is there anything you could share that people outside your profession might not know about?

I work in a pizza restaurant as a Shift Supervisor. It's a great job; I adore all of my coworkers, my boss is the absolute best, I can usually request days off so I can do things with my boyfriend. But it can be stressful; I just got called and told that this Friday, someone needs a $700 order of 22 extra large pizzas delivered by 11:30 in the morning, and I am the dough roller for the morning, so they need me in an hour early. I've got a lot of work cut out for me Friday morning. .__.

What do you guys do? Discuss anything on your mind regarding your job!

I'm about to graduate but I'm going to be taking a full-time job as a software developer once I get out of school, in mid-June. I've been dreaming about being a programmer since I was 15 years old so I'm fairly excited to start doing that full-time. Hopefully I don't burn out on it!

I'm almost done with college. Semester's over in a few days, and then there's field camp at the end of the month. After that I have a summer job lined up (its cleaning a school, and I'm not fond of cleaning). And then after that....I don't know.

As soon as school gets out I'll be working at our local gym which is open 24 hours and I work 2nd/3rd shift so I still have the most of the day to spend doing as I please and then I can go work out, get paid, and do something I enjoy. Then it's off to community college for hopefully just a semester so I can switch into a college that is actually worth mentioning.

Right now I am working in the Army National Guard part-time as a Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic. I like my unit, everyone is really chill, but I don't enjoy being a mechanic. I'm trying to get my MOS changed to a Combat Engineer with a new unit, but due to that unit being deployed and along with my current unit's recent change of command, it doesn't look like it's going to happen any time soon.

I am also doing funeral honors part-time with the Army NG. It's a honor doing this job, but honestly it's just depressing, so I don't see myself doing this for too much longer.

And my last part-time job is a diesel mechanic at a local truck stop. The pay is really good. Can't stand my co-workers, they ♥♥♥♥♥ and moan about everything. I don't really like this job too much because, like I said earlier, I don't like being a mechanic.

I was studying Civil Engineering, but that has been postponed now due to my recent short deployment to Guatemala.

What is funeral honours, if you don't mind my asking? It sounds pretty sorrowful but I've never heard of it.

It's an extra duty that's all about preforming the burials for fallen soldiers. We fire off the rounds during Taps and present the flag to the fallen soldier's spouse or parents. It's just a lot of Drill and Ceremony.

That's sounds really saddening. I don't know if I could handle it. I get pretty emotional though.

Well I hope you find something a little less emotionally exhausting soon. You don't need that in your life for any extended period of time. :(

Definitely depressing -- I know I couldn't do anything like that.
But, I'm glad we have people like you out there who can, even if only for a little while. Having both that and the PGR made it a little easier on my family when we lost my great-uncle last summer, and I'm sure it's brought comfort to the families you've, more or less, been there for. :)

I haven't worked a single day in my life other than the mandatory volunteer hours during high school, but I don't consider that actual work. And since I screwed my life for the last 2.5 years studying psychology, and recently changed my career plans, I won't be working a solid job for a while :c Though I do have a co-op term this coming January so hopefully I'll be able to get work experience in the field before being thrown into the wilderness.

If I have one piece of advice to give you, it's this: suck it up. Do it anyway.

Don't feel mentally up to it? Do it anyway.
Don't have any motivation? Do it anyway.

The world isn't gonna wait til you feel like it, the reality is holing yourself up in your parents house and feeling sorry for yourself isn't doing anybody any good.

I'm working at a bagel/coffee place. It's licensed out by a parent company, who owns a bunch of food places on campus. It's easy work, customers are pretty awesome, it's a fun environment, and it's got good pay and benefits. I've got no complaints about it.

School's out next Friday. I'll be unemployed for about a month, and then I've got 3 weeks of work at another restaurant within the parent company. I'm waiting to hear back if I will have work after that stint or not. If not, I'll be able to draw unemployment until school starts in late August, but I'd much rather work all summer. I need the health insurance, and I'd like to not stiff my roommate on bills and food any more this year. Unemployment money will only cover rent and the bills in my name. :/

I don't know, it's a rather bleak outlook. Sit on a couch in my parents house on welfare, be kicked out and live homeless, scrounging for pennies. Commit some relatively victimless crime and risk soapy shower time and throat slitting for a nice 3x3m cell, regular meals and forced labour. Or I could find a nice ceiling fixture and a length of rope.

Wasn't life simpler when we were uneducated peasants who had no option but to work our farm or we would starve to death.

Well, that certainly made me sound bad. So weak and whiny that I would rather allude to suicide than contribute to society and do some work. My mind is mush and my hands are soft, unnacustomed to anything but a smart phone.

That whole spiel was quite pathetic, I just don't see myself being taken in as an employee anywhere.

I'll get what I deserve. Isn't it amusing that all that really matters in life is that you work and make money for society. You think we'd have made robots to run everything, maybe in a century or two.
I have to agree with catholic nun.

If you can't take the plunge and try things beyond your comfort zone, you could be in the same position in 5 years time... 10 year time or longer. And the longer you wait the harder it is to break the cycle.

You'd be surprised what you can achieve once you get started. Confidence is built through achievement, so the more you do the more confident you become. That confidence will help in all areas of your life. Plus you get some spending money and independence.

on topic, I work as an engineer

I'm also a Shift Supervisor/Team Leader at my job, and it's.. ehhh, okay I guess. I'm in a lot better position than I was at this stage 18 or so months ago, anyway.

I'm hoping i'll get to move on to some sort of management training programme and see if I can go from there. Apparently having something like that on your CV opens all sorts of opportunities for you.

I'm not attending school, just working at the one in town. I'm still too broke for school. I'm too broke for life right now. ;____;

tl;dr they shut down our pizza place in late February. They told us we were closing the day we closed. We heard wind of it the day before, because someone came and told us they'd bought our dough machine, which is kind of important for a pizza place. I got a bit of severance pay, but it wasn't enough to keep me current on my bills.
I was super duper lucky, one of my old bosses from the pizza place works at this current job and was still in touch with all of us, even though she'd moved on. I was offered the job that day, and was officially hired 2 weeks later. She is the best boss. :D

I'm actually a manager at the new place too. Just didn't mention it in post. They call the position a 'lead' which is kinda silly.
