I thought this was an interesting topic. What games have you played that seemingly took forever to beat, even if you tried rushing through them (or ones that you're still trying to beat after having them for a long amount of time)? I remember there used to be a lot of RPGs that literally forced you to take your time and do things correctly (Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy VI for the SNES were pretty good for making you do exactly that). Nowadays it seems that these games either relatively rare or not worth the time it actually takes to beat them. In recent times, I've found some games like the Etrian Odyssey series kind of bring back the older style, where you didn't really have the option to just do a quick play-through, and I've found games like them rather enjoyable because of the fact.

Final Fantasy III for Famicom (I played a translated version back in like 2007). That may have been the longest game I've ever played. It was LOOONG. I never actually finished it. I eventually got the DS version when that came out a few years ago, which I proceeded to not finish, either. It is a fun game, though, just very, very long.

Definitely Etrian Odyssey IV (and any Etrian Odyssey game in general). They're called dungeon crawlers for a reason, and even as you advance further you'll find that you gain access to paths on earlier floors that weren't there before XD Upon completing EOIV (the only one I've completed), I discovered there was yet another labyrinth (and not one of the tiny ones) for me to do.

Tales of games also tend to be long; there's a reason Tales of Symphonia (my fave Tales of game) has two discs, something none of the other GC games I've played has XD That being said, I haven't completed any of them but have clocked a lot of hours on them.

Content-wise: yes, it was a VERY long game. Story-wise: not so much. But then, the appeal of older RPGs was generally more content over storyline.

I still haven't beaten EO IV or EO Untold: The Millennium Girl, but I'm still working on them. I'm up to the end of Maze 3 in EO IV, and the end of the 4th Stratum in EO Untold. Story mode is actually very full in EOU.

Surprisingly, Donkey Kong Country Returns for the 3DS. For some reason, I just can't play that game for long periods of time - I feel like I breeze through each level pretty quickly. I don't really feel accomplished when I beat a level, as in all honestly I don't really see the game as that much of a challenge. That's probably the reason why I'm always putting it down because I don't have the passion to finish the game like I do for other games that really pull me in like Bravely Default. I've gone through most of DKCR, but it's been maybe 2 months since I started it and I honestly don't know when I'll pick it up again.

Well Skyrim literally never ends because it has random quests that will forever make themselves.

All of the other games I can think of off the top of my head have already been named.

To be absolutely honest, Pokémon SoulSilver. I restart it, and then get distracted with Pokémon Y, or White/2, or something. Then I have to restart it again because I don't know where I'm going. So it never gets completed. But I will complete it, mark my words.

Also The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind. The enemies in it are SO creepy. Especially the Bone Walkers... *cries* The latest two Elder Scrolls games aren't nearly as terrifying as Morrowind.

Being that the majority of my games probably take around 15-20 hours to complete, I was surprisingly floored by the time it took to play through probably 3/4 of Tales of Xillia. It was probably the first game that I've spent more than 40 hours on a game, and I didn't even finish it! Some of that time was allocated towards grinding, but even still, there were times where I wanted to rush through the rest of the game to finish it ;; But then the story would keep going, and going...

You only play 1-day to complete games?
That's a shame... you should try something you can dive in for longer time =D

Actually, I think Vanille Sky is referring to how most games don't generally take that long to really beat anymore in terms of actual playtime hours. I mean, that's the whole point of this thread: to talk about the games that actually do force you to take your time and aren't just something you can rush through.

Well, they take me 2-3 days to complete since I've been stuck in school for the past 3 years XD Otherwise, yeah, they would probably only take me an entire day to complete. Don't get me wrong, I love video games, but investing more than my threshold of like 40 hours would probably be too long a game for me \: For instance, a game that I just recently finished, Child of Light, took me only a total of ~10 hours to complete, but I wholly wished that it was way longer because of how the graphics, dialogue, gameplay, and everything came together beautifully. I wouldn't have minded if that game went on for longer than 40 hours.

Wait, so are you saying when you buy a game you usually beat it 2 to 3 days after buying it? That either means you're really invested into the game, or you're just trying to rush through it /: But I know what you mean about 40 hour games. When you just want to beat the game and it keeps dragging on and on, it's quite a nuisance.

Generally whenever I get a new game, I become obsessed with it for a few days or until I finish the game :P For example, the first day I got my 3DS, and Pokemon X along with it, I played for 14 hours a day for 3-4 days XD

Xenoblade Chronicles, definitely. I've had it since release, and I still haven't finished it (Granted, I haven't had much time to play games due to college and all). I've put about 28 hours so far into it, and I don't believe I'm 1/4 done with the story. I heard the game takes around 100 hrs to complete. O_O

Another one to me was The World Ends With You. It was so much fun, I literally did everything. It took me months to finish, I started to believe the game didn't end... until it ended. :'(

LOL. I've heard the same thing from my friend. He played probably 10 hours per day for a week in order to finish so 100 hours to complete isn't far off the mark XD I could never spend that much time on one game; my attention span doesn't allow for it ;;

I've played through plenty of games like that, with most recent being Super Mario Galaxy. Gotten through it couple of times before, but this time around, I tried doing it as fast as I could; unfortunately, it still took a pretty long, darn time. :( Have enjoyed each and every minute of it, though, so that sort of makes up for it. Aside from that, I've also attempted this on Assassin's Creed II; wasn't very successful with it, either, haha.

The Disgaea series. Now those are a serious time investment. If wanna do all the post-game stuff in those games, you gotta sink a ♥♥♥♥load of time into them. Like in Disgaea D2, I'm trying to get strong enough to beat Baal....I have over 100 hours on it, still not close to being strong enough. Still gotta finish up my reincarnations, getting my equipment to level 999, capping my LoC stats, etc. I have about 250+ hours each on 1, 2, and 4.

And then there's Phantasy Star Online (GC).....been playing that (on and off) for ten years....still haven't beat Episode 2 Ultimate mode. Probably never will unless I get my hands on an Action Replay.

Dude, that sounds like grinding heaven. Now I want that game to invest a crap ton of time into maxing out XD I didn't know that there existed games that went beyond the normal 99 level cap.

You like grinding? Then Disgaea D2 is definitely for you. You spend more time grinding than anything else. And 999 is just the level cap for items; 9,999 is the cap for the actual characters (and you can have 2.5 million stored levels via reincarnation). Stats in DD2 cap at 999 million for all stats but HP/SP; those cap at 999 billion.

It's not just the Disgaea series either; most of Nippon Ichi's games have absurdly high levels and stats (though Disgaea D2 has the highest caps of any of their games).

These two comments back to back are funny, because they both pity her but for different reasons. One is saying that 15-20 hours is one day and she should play longer games, the other is saying that spending 2 to 3 days on a 15-20 hour game is rushing through it. Make up your mind, people! Are we all playing video games 12 hours a day or is 5 too much??
