Not affiliated with the store in anyway, although they do help to provide a nice thread title.. :)

Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire
introduced Ribbons, items you could affix to your Pokemon to indicate a particular achievement. These were greatly expanded on during Generation 4, mysteriously removed for the most part during Generation 5 (although still present in game coding), and made a modest return in Generation 6. The most notable Ribbons from Generation 3 seem to be:

-the numerous Contest Ribbons: 5 per Contest attribute/category, with 1 Ribbon designated for each Rank
-the Effort Ribbon (which assists in tracking Effort Values, although I'm unsure if it's still needed)
-the Artist Ribbon (given to Pokemon that get Contest portraits placed in Lilycove Art Museum)
-the "Victory" Ribbons (awarded within the Battle Tower for beating 56 Trainers in the Level 50 or Open Level Courses)

Similarly, Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 introduced Medals (also returning in Pokemon X and Y), which instead signify player achievements as opposed to feats of any single Pokemon.

Do you enjoy the concepts of Ribbons and Medals! Do you think that Pokemon OmegaRuby/AlphaSapphire should introduce any new Ribbons and Medals, or remove any older ones?

My remarks:

I loved the idea of Ribbons, and I hope that more are introduced; there were a lot of unused Generation 3 which have pretty artwork that never got put to good use.. :( Ribbons for Pokemon Video Game Championships (maybe for the next 5-8 years, until the next generation of Pokemon is released?) would be great.

I feel that all of the Hoenn Battle Facilities should award the "Victory Ribbon" once you achieve a predetermined goal (like beating 50 Trainers), but only for the Open Level/Level 100 course (I feel that that course is the "true" challenge...not to mention that a lot of the Pokemon that you start out with at the beginning of the game may be beyond Level 50 by the time you unlock the Battle Frontier, so they miss out on an opportunity to up their Medal count..in contrast, the Open Level course doesn't impose such a limit, so practicalyl any non-banned Pokemon can earn the Victory Ribbon regardless of Level). I'm not sure how I feel about multiple Modes getting their own designated Ribbon (like Sinnoh/Johto's Battle Tower, IIRC)..

Wow, I just learned that all "Contest" Ribbons and "Tower" Ribbons get consolidated in Generation 6... I think I'm opposed to the consolidation of Contest Ribbons but I don't mind "Tower" Ribbons getting consolidated.. Hopefully, OR/AS gives you a Ribbon for each Contest Rank once again (alternatively, just have 5 Ribbons for the 5 Contest Categories. As your Pokemon advances in Contest Ranks, your Ribbon gets "modified/embellished" into the final Master Rank form).

-----

As for Medals, maybe actions like talking to the "White Rock" constantly, checking the Mossdeep Space Center count repeatedly, entering the Lilycove Lottery a lot, talking on TV a lot, and actually visiting Mirage Island or catching a Shiny Pokemon could net one some medals? Beating the Hoenn Battle Frontier by getting all Silver/Gold Symbols would have to count for sure, as well as beating 50/100 Trainers consecutively in the Battle Tower (which earns you the Silver/Gold Shield, as well).

These actually felt rewarding to show what you've achieved, it was so fun trying to obtain them all and I can't wait to collect them all over again!

In my opinion they should use both medals and ribbons. Maybe use ribbons for Pokemon achievements or as badges for the contest circuit again while medals for achievements ingame.

RIBBONSSSSSSSSSS. I never really cared about medals because they were for the trainers but ribbons were for the Pokemon. I always imagine my Pokemon wearing the ribbons they earned and I always try to earn each Pokemon as many ribbons as I can.

I'm curious to see what they'll do with the Contest ribbons though, since X and Y merged all the old Contest ribbons on a Pokemon into one ribbon. I hope they make new ribbons for the new games because the more ribbons the better!

I think I would be more engaged with Medals this time around, but I don't really care if they aren't included. However, I definitely think Ribbons will return! What's Hoenn without contests and what are contests without ribbons?

I voted jut for Ribbons - mainly cause in all honesty I completely forgot about the medals in Unova lol whereas Ribbons have always made a bigger impact on me, from the ones earned in Contests to the other ones like the Snooze and Alert Ribbons from Sinnoh :) Plus, having them displayed on your Pokémon is a real treat and part of what makes the experience of Ribbons so great in the first place :)

I'm hoping that they'll add in the player to the portrait they take of the Pokemon after it's won's a contest. They could have the Pokemon wearing it's ribbon, or the player holding it near them similar to dog show owner pictures with their winning dogs wearing their awards.

I hope they could do ribbons a la Anime style that if they decide to do RS style, that the ribbons will be styled each city like a badge? And maybe they could add a customization to the Pokemon that you can add ribbons to it?

The grand festival should totally be in Ever Grande City! In all its grandeur, the grand occasion will be be grandly marked by the grand presence of the grand Grande Contest!

Anyway, with the awesome new 3D engine and all, I don't think anything would stop them from getting all new cool ribbons in, especially since medals are such a bore. Besides, they would greatly supplement the new contest mechanics they'll think up, since Hoenn is a Contest region, after all. There's no way they can remove it. Totally want an anime style contest, though.

I like medals and Ribbons. Ribbon are cool cuz it makes each individual Pokemon stand out from others. You could remember the fierce battles the won because of that ribbon.

Are all of the contest data like Condition/sheen and stuff still in the game code. We assume Hoenn will have contests, but are we sure? Gen 5 looked like it was trying to get rid of the idea...

I actually played Saphire a bit this week to do a Cool Contest with Sparky the Magneton. It was more fun than I remember. I never liked contests as a kid.
