Is it fair using legendaries to battle?

I would always say no. For one thing it is against my pride to use a legendary even if it guarantees a win. And secondly, I prefer to use pokemon that I've raised from the start by thorough training (legendaries are usually available late in game and are at high level so there's no fun using them).

I guess there's a point to be made for it being unfair in the main game, but even then... Eh, it's not as if any of the games are that challenging without them.

As for in battles against other players, absolutely it is fair. There's literally nothing stopping the other person from using them, and it's not as if many legendaries aren't incredibly easy to counter (Especially Rayquaza and Deoxys), so I say use them as much as you want and quit being a scrublord (To no one in particular, of course.)

Think of it this way: your walking through the streets of lavender town, and then some guy comes towards you, challenging you to a Pokemon duel. Because you have no other choice, you agree, and then he immediately throws out Yvetal. Because it is so powerful a legendary, it will be almost impossible to defeat. Therefore, the opponent gets your money.

So no, I don't think legendaries are fair unless the opponent also has one.

That'd be a fair way of putting it if I was the challenger literally ever. When you run up to someone and demand they fight you, you need to get set to get wrecked if you're not ready for anything. Besides, by that logic I shouldn't be able to use things like excadrill or pseudo legendaries, which are similarly OP.

In-game, I think it depends. There are plenty of legendaries that aren't too overpowered and wouldn't make the game easier to beat. I'd say most of the "main" legendaries (i.e., the ones you're required to fight) plus Mewtwo are definitely overpowered and would make the game somewhat easier. However, even if you do use one of those legendaries you aren't guaranteed to be able to beat everyone in-game. If you're battling another person, it'd be somewhat unfair if you had an entire team of Arceus (unless you didn't know how to use them) up against the person's in-game team. That being said, the person you're battling may or may not have competitive experience (or just be a good battler in general), so it's more fair to use legendaries in that instance.

It's not really a clear-cut thing. People often view legendaries as OP, insta-win Pokemon, but not all legendaries are OP (like the Kanto bird trio, for example). They don't guarantee victory. In the hands of an amateur battler, stuff like Mewtwo, Arceus, or Xerneas isn't that much of threat. I've beaten down several teams of legendaries simply because they weren't properly trained, had not so good movesets, and/or just didn't know what they were doing. It's a different story with a competent battler.

Tbh, I don't mind if people use legendaries in battle. What's the point of the Pokemon existing if you can't use them (And it baffles me why some legendaries aren't allowed in the Battle Subway/Battle Maison)? Sure, maybe its a bit annoying when some guy's Darkrai sweeps your non-legendaries team, but its not as if everyone online is using teams full of uber legendaries.

And you can't deny me use of my Zekrom.

I think it's fair. Not every legendary Pokemon's broken. Strong, sure, but broken? Quite the stretch.

Every, and I mean every Pokemon can be defeated. The only one that I'd have second thoughts about would be Arceus, considering the whole Multitype thing.

In game, I don't think it matters, since you get the legendary later on in the game usually, and I used to use them when I caught them, now I just kind of box them. :/

Online, it just depends I guess? Using a couple of legendaries would be okay I suppose...I wish people didn't though because I like using unique Pokemon and wish more people used different Pokemon as I don't like to carry someone in my team just to counter one Pokemon. And a lot of the time, I see people using ONLY legendaries...and sometimes I go ahead and battle them, most of the time I know the battle is pointless to even try and quit before we even start. :/ To me it just feels like they are being unfair at that point. I could easily get a whole team of really tough legendaries and win many battles, I want to see more people using "normal" pokemon, I want to see different unique teams, not the same Pokemon over and over and over.

For me, it depends on the kind of legendary. I don't mind using the trio legends (the birds, the Regis, etc.) or cute legendaries like Mew, Celebi, and Jirachi, but I never use Ubers like Mewtwo, Lugia, Kyogre, Groudon, etc.

Personally in-game I don't use legendary mon at all, since they seem to come 'ready made' (Kyogre in Sapphire is the biggest offender of this I've ever seen) and at a high enough level where it makes that stage of the game less of a challenge in general. Funnily enough the 2 types I did use legendaries they were both electric: Zapdos in a mono-electric run in Kanto for support vs Bruno and Drake and Raikou in pokemon Brown because my team was horrible lol. Anyway, it's just preference I guess.

Online, I find it easier to just go by tiers since it does a good job of identifying the """"OP"""" legends. A team of Mew / Celebi / Jirachi / Manaphy / Shaymin / Victini may look super scary at a glance until you notice that using something like Hydreigon, Heracross, even Galvantula can probably decimate the entire thing. A lot of legendaries aren't that good compared to other pokemon for the roles they need to play and by trying to ban them all, you're actively saying that Phione and Articuno are more dangerous than Speed Boost Mega-Blaziken and pals which is objectively false.

I don't know, I'd say it's okay to use them - after all, if they're among your favourite Pokémon why not :) I used a Raikou on Silver I think it was and it wasn't a completely unstoppable Pokémon so I guess in some circumstances, like depending on what level you catch it and at what point in the game, it's fair :)

I'm not so much interested in using legendaries anymore. I liked to use Mewtwo in Gen 1, Ho-Oh and Lugia in Gen 2 and Kyogre in Gen 3, but now I don't really care anymore. By the time you get access to legendaries you probably have a full team already that you're used to (and that was there the whole time) and switching out one of them for a Pokemon that comes too late in the main story, simply doesn't feel right to me.

In online battles I'd really like to use a couple of them, but unfortunately most of them are event exclusives. Getting the ones I want takes more than it is worth it and I don't want to use hacked Pokemon in these battles.

I agree with you. The same reason that stops me too from using legendaries. I just don't feel right to keep out the pokemon that I have got used to during the journey for the sake of a legendary.

I generally refrain from using legendary Pokemon during the main part of the games. Took some fun out of the franchise having such a powerful Pokemon to help take out the Elite Four. Not using them kept the challenging aspect of the end of the game alive. Although, not all legendaries are created equal, and weaker ones like the Lake trio are fair game, in my opinion. Especially in the post-game, most of them should be allowed, as that's where the highest level Pokemon reside.

In general, it depends. I don't mind other people using legendaries. I, myself, don't use legendaries for the challenge. But I have used legendaries in-game before. To be honest, it takes away the challenge. When I first played Sapphire, my team composed of an over-leveled Blaziken, Kyogre, and I forgot the rest lol (it was a decade ago, my noob days). Kyogre swept the entire E4 and the Champion. So it definitely took away the challenge/fun. But if you're having trouble though, then I recommend using some, or train your Pokes. I believe though in the fact that every Pokes can be defeated. There are some legendaries that are not very strong.
May the odds be ever in your Buizel!

Imo it's fair to use manageable legends such as Zapdos, Articuno, Entei, Kyurem-B etc. However, Ubers like Mewtwo, Rayquaza, Xerneas, Arceus, Kyogre and such are another story because of their enormous stats and great abilities (unlike Regigigigigigigigigigigigigas and Slaking).

I've found that using legendaries can be fair indeed, given that the stage is set to a competitive one. Because every Pokemon in that situation has 5 or 6 perfect IVs, are EV trained, have appropriate abilities and items, and have competitive movesets. Which obviously makes things a little more even.

I've been in many, many 'Random battle' setups on Pokemon Showdown. I've been up against many legendaries and have used many legendaries. They are not that hard to counter, and they're not all that powerful during usage either. It just depends on the person's skill, prediction, etc. most of the time. A legendary will only be as strong as you are in that situation.

So to this I say, yes. It is fair to use legendaries if the match up itself is fair.

Because who enjoys a one-sided fight anyway?

I don't like playing with legends. And I really don't like when I see a guy with full team of legends.
There's only one legend I could use and it's Articuno. He's not stronger than pseudo-legendary and I like it's typing.
Another thing is pseudo-legendaries. A team consisting of Metagross, Tyranitar, Dragonite, Hydreigon, Garchomp and Salamence. This team is overpowered and you can see that your opponent doesn't care about tactics. This team could be easily crushed but still I don't think it's professional at all.

I don't use them ingame because like others, I like to use Pokemon that I've raised from the beginning; it's just my preference. However, I feel like it's fair if the opponent uses a legendary. In fact? Bring it on! Adds some challenge (like N in BW).

A lot of legendary Pokemon are outclassed by some "regular" Pokemon out there. I guess I'm only thinking about this in terms of competitive battling. There are some that are considered Uber, however, ingame, you're allowed to use whatever Uber Pokemon you want, too. I used Excadrill in almost every one of my BW playthroughs and that Pokemon was booted out of the main tier before XY.

In legendaries too, there can be too categories. There are the ones which are banned in contests, battles etc. These usually involve the superpowerful ones such as Mewto, Dialga, Palkia, Groudon, Kyogre... IMO these should be excluded. Using someone such as Regirock or Cobalion is fine and also they do not come under the banned category.
