This might be useful if you know anyone who's stuck on XP for a while.

In that link above, there's a link to a ZDNet article, and apparently they got a response from Microsoft on the matter.

We recently became aware of a hack that purportedly aims to provide security updates to Windows XP customers. The security updates that could be installed are intended for Windows Embedded and Windows Server 2003 customers and do not fully protect Windows XP customers. Windows XP customers also run a significant risk of functionality issues with their machines if they install these updates, as they are not tested against Windows XP. The best way for Windows XP customers to protect their systems is to upgrade to a more modern operating system, like Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.
While I don't necessarily think this is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, I'd have to kinda say I agree with Microsoft in case anything goes wrong on an XP machine, since these updates weren't made originally for XP. However, it'd be something for me to definitely try out sometime in a virtual machine, or even my mother's old laptop.

That may be partially true. They might be broken in certain ways that wouldn't be a problem on a POS device. However, I think it's more likely that they'll work fine, but they won't cover all of the components of Windows XP, as the POS OS these updates are for is a scaled-down version of XP without all of the same components. So parts of the OS will still be out of date.

I don't know if I'd deploy it in on a production server in a business setting without doing some heavy testing first, but like you said, I wouldn't feel bad about deploying it to end users.

I think this article provides some important context.

Wow, all I can say is that I can confirm that this is true. I applied this registry trick onto an XP installation inside of VMWare, and it worked. I did take note that the updates were addressed to Server 2003, but they still worked.
