Just by in your opinion. Thinking on your views with the term 'classic', how do you think that video games can become 'classics'?

Playability through the ages. If you can play a game multiple times and the story and gameplay hold up through all of the plays and keeps you entertained it should be a classic. So like legend of Zelda games, some final fantasy games, original Pokemon, and Mario games are all classics.

Name.

If it has "classic" in name... it's classic.

Yea, I had to, because the answer was already stated.
If a game is still played after decades and still enjoy it, it has all the requirements for being classic.

#1: people TALK about it (Dungeons and Dragons @ roll a d1 for FLIRT initiative... or bum check)
#2: gamer played THEMSELF, or know a buddy who has (World of Warcraft, League of Legends, The Sims)
#3: gamers WANT to play it, or would play AGAIN (Dark Souls, Halo, Elder Scrolls)
#4: other developers take inspiration from it (Tetris, Zelda)

If it defines a generation or redefines gaming for its current generation and future generations, it is classic.

What makes a game classic is, if you ask me, when they manage to make a big impact in gaming world, set examples, and inspire future series. Mario would be a great example, and I'm sure it's had influence on all modern platforming games in some capacity. Another thing that you should consider when declaring something classic--whether it be movies, games, music, or any other form of media--is enjoyment value, and more importantly, longevity; if you feel that you could play, listen, or watch whatever it is whenever (even if it's 10 years or so later), then in my opinion, you should be able to call it "classic." =)

It definitely varies from person to person, but for me, a classic would be defined as a game that is timeless - years upon years after its release, people continue to play it and enjoy it. Not only that, but it embodies the aspects of gaming that every person desires; replay ability, plot, character design, graphics, among others. They don't all have to be exceptional, but not one category is lacking. Finally, they make an impact on their generation, changing the way that genre of gaming is seen due to the prominence of it.
