I think people do watch some sports is because if the game is great, at least they can go home happy. It's like a music concert or something like that, really... if it's bad, then you're just gonna leave.

I can understand that you don't like sports... that's completely fine. Everybody has their likes and dislikes at the end of the day and you can't make people like what you like.

I just don't see the point or value behind watching sports and being caught up in it. It's like partisan politics – a huge waste of time, for me at least.
Nah, it's not really like politics. It's no more a waste of time than watching a TV show or a movie. An even closer comparison could be made to watching people play video games, but that's not necessarily a common activity even if you include eSports and Let's Plays.

I don't really watch many sports and I don't get supporting a team that you just happened to be born near (the only team I support is the team I chose, Notre Dame), but watching sports in itself isn't so confusing. Watching a bunch of players with certain stats fight each other while a strategist watches and tries to outsmart each other can be fun.

I'll typically watch football games, specifically NFL games, if those are on. Other than that, I'm not much into any sports, although I usually do watch the sports reports on the news just to see how the local teams are doing.

This is what I tend to do as well, I don't watch many sporting broadcasts so I usually just watch the reports on the scores and such. It's pretty given because Australians love their sport and I never get time to watch everything.

I think sports fun to play -- really fun. But watching other people play sports? No thank you. I think people get way too involved in sports games, and the people who genuinely get angry because their team loses? I can't help but laugh at that kind of reaction like what are you doing?

Though, I do still have my favorite teams. Like for the FIFA, I'm rooting for Germany. And in the NFL my team is New England Patriots. But I don't like actively watch these games.

Maybe the commercial endorsements involved are a turn-off as well, then. You can't ad-block the TV, let alone when the MCs themselves are doing the promotions, right? I wouldn't say international soccer is as guilty as American sports such as football, though, however it does have its share.

Could be. I'm pretty good at tuning them out so they never bother me, and at least when I watch ND games on TV the announcers aren't talking about products unless it's right before/after commercials, so it's easy for me to figure out when they're playing and go back to doing something else until the game is back. :)

The strategy of sports is far too complicated for me though. When you get really into it every sport is super intense and requires more thought than even things like Pokemon battling.

just don't watch it if you don't find it entertaining

it is as simple as that
That doesn't really stop people from expressing their opinions on the matter, does it?

no, and that was not my intent in making that post. in fact that post was merely me expressing my opinion on the matter mate.

for what it's worth I do enjoy the occasional sporting event every now and again.

I watch sports for the sake of watching people try their hardest to win. I don't really support any team, per say, in the FIFA World Cup. But I do want USA to go far. Us Americans are pros when it comes to blind pride.

Ain't that the truth - I have literally no interest in soccer but I got happy when USA won. It's like ingrained somewhere inside me.

Speaking as a die-hard fan of the Washington Nationals (who were an absolutely awful team until 2012), I think I can give a good reason why it's sometimes worth getting angry when your team loses. Some of the best memories I have are of being on hand at Nats games with my dad, and the team pulls off some incredible upset and the whole stadium goes nuts. I can't tell you how awesome it felt to be in the crowd at the first game at their new, non-temporary ballpark and see my favorite player on the team hit a home run in the bottom of the ninth to break the tie and win the game.

The thing is, though, the only reason it's such a good memory is because I really, really care about this team, and when you care that much you can't help get affected when they lose. It may sound silly to put so much emotional investment into something vicarious, but just know that when this team came to DC in '05 they probably became the first thing my dad, brothers, and I were all equally passionate about.

So yeah, I get peeved when my team loses, and I make no apologies for it. It's a necessary part of a wonderful thing, and I hope to pass it on to my kids someday the way my dad passed it on to me and my brothers.

The only sport I really care about has been baseball. I was never athletic at all so I rather enjoy sports than have to play one.

As for the World Cup this year, I've only been keeping up with it cause my brother is really into watching it right now. He puts it on during dinner and when I'm eating dinner I'd rather eat with family than by myself, so sometimes I stuck with it.

I admit though, the best game I've seen so far was when US beat Ghana Monday. Such a good game and that first goal was amazing!

Ehhhhhhhh, I hesitate to call it amazing. USA played pretty badly, they got off lucky. That first goal by Dempsy was definitely a work of art, though.

But...guys...Spain-Netherlands? Best game ever imo
That was the best game by miles. A really exciting game to watch, and it may be the best game in this World Cup. Brazil v Croatia would have been a close second if it wasn't for Nishimura screwing over Croatia, not once but twice.

That goal was mainly what I was talking about. I don't know enough about soccer to know if that really was a good game actually.... I guess USA was just lucky.
