The current generation's screwed up beyond belief; I think it's too late to be thinking of the children. Even then, you can't use "think of the children" as something to make a decision final, it has no substance to back it up. It's because of this that the think of the children thing annoys the hell out of it, the fact that nobody uses it properly anymore, at least in my eyes.

This generation of people are really sucky. We screwed up so bad and there's really nothing we can do to stop it or to make sure it doesn't happen again. If we try to instill something different into the next generation and try to make it so that they don't see or do the things that kids of this generation do then not only will they hate us, but they won't obey for one, and then for two they'll just end up doing it anyways and then probably doing something even worse. If you want to think of the children, then think of yourself first.

It depends on the context of the statement. I know, I know nuance is haaaard and it's so much easier to just say everything is crap and who cares, but there are times in which a "think of the children" would be valid. To use a somewhat extreme example, say someone wanted to set up a smoke shop kiosk in a children's playground and advertise "free candy if you buy some smokes". Obviously people wouldn't look kindly on that, and the argument boils down to "think of the children".

The context that changes things for me is whether or not the thing is clearly targeted towards children. If you're just selling brightly-colored alcohol and people say you shouldn't because it targets children, I'll laugh at you. If you're selling "4kidz shots" with children's characters on them and setting up in front of a toy store, you're obviously taking advantage of the lack of judgment children have and their likes to sell them something they shouldn't have yet and screw you.

I don't like the adult world changing because of children - but I also don't like the adult world getting away with exploiting children.

I've never liked the whole "think of the children" thing because its usually taken to the extreme. Yes, there are some things that children shouldn't be exposed to, and they have poor judgment and decision making skills, but then it sometimes leads to children living really sheltered lives, which only hurts them in the long run. They'll never grow up if you don't let them experience reality ever now and again.

George Carlin sums up my opinion on Child Worship better than I ever could (actually spot-on):
