Wherever you are now in your home is where this takes place. If you are reading this and you aren't home, assume you are where you normally spend your time at night.

It's the middle of the night and you hear some noise coming from the front door. Everyone is where they are expected to be right now, so this is strange and very startling. You hear a man with a very deep voice speaking. You don't recognize this voice. Your heart sinks with fear. You hear another man speak who, again, you don't recognize. It's at this moment you realize that your home is being intruded and possibly burglarized. You scan the room quickly and decide you need to get out of the house. You worry about the safety of your family, if you live with others. But your survival becomes your first priority before attempting to contact the authorities.

They have yet to physically enter the home but will do so in a matter of seconds, so you have enough time to get somewhere safer if you're near the front door.

What is your escape plan? Is it something that you feel you can achieve without getting caught by the intruders?

I'm sitting in my living room; the door is down a hall-ish area but still in plain sight. I would have no time from the moment they walked in the door to the moment they saw me. My mom and I spend basically all our time in here so I'd wake her up if it was night, and then probably go out the back door because it's the only other exit from the house - we have one tiny window above our kitchen sink that leads out the front and I don't think I could get through it anyway, and a few second floor windows, but I wouldn't be on the second floor.

The back door is loud though, and we generally leave the back blinds open because we have an enclosed backyard so they would see us. The worst part is that there's no back gate or any way to get out of the backyard, so...as soon as they come in they'd see the open back door, the open blinds, and then us trapped in the backyard.

I guess that means I'd be toast. :(

The only two doors in the house are in the entryway and in the living room. The entryway is on the opposite side of the house from my room, so I can just remove the screen from my window, climb out, and run into the nearly-endless woods behind my house.

If they come in through the living room, it'd be slightly trickier considering that they'd see/hear me exiting. If they had a gun, I'd be screwed and would have to find another way out. If they had melee, though, I could probably outrun them. My adrenaline running is a lot faster that most people would expect. If I couldn't escape out my window, I'd be screwed. My bedroom comes right out into the living room and they'd see me.

This is why I own a AR-15. I keep it locked up in a locker in my room with a magazine inserted but not locked and a closed bolt, meaning there's not a round in the chamber. So first thing I would do is grab that rifle, keep all the lights off in the house and try to look out the window to see how many intruders there are, weapons and all that. If there's 2 or less with non-small arms weapons, I would yell out the window to warn them that this house is armed. If they don't listen to that then I'll just call the police and stand my ground, probably fire a few warning shots to let them know that I'm not screwing around. If they are 3 or more, or carrying small arms, then that's a fight I'm going to lose, but luckily there's some wooded areas right behind my house, I would just exit through the back door and find good concealment back there, call the cops and hope they don't try to find me. It's my house, I'm not abandoning it unless I know I can't defend it.

My room is trapped on one side of all three exists of the house. The only ways out are through the kitchen, living room, and basement. My room is down the hall from all three, so I'm pretty much screwed. The window in my room is also parallel from the living room door, so if they came in that way, they would see me climb out the window. Also, the screen on my window isn't removable, so that's not a good thing. There's also a big bush that covers up my window, so even if I could get the screen out, I couldn't safely get out the window. If they came in the basement door, I might have time to get across the hallway and out the front door. If they came in through the kitchen or living room door, I'm screwed. The floors in my house are thin and allow sound to travel through them easily, AND are creaky; if they came in through the basement, they would here me walking upstairs, catch me, and do certain.. things to my.... never mind. Basically, if they came in the house, I'm ♥♥♥♥ed.

I could just go all The Purge mode, and turn off all the lights, grab a large kitchen knife, and play a game with them.

Since they're on the porch by the time I notice, I'd be able to sneak out of my room, across the dining room, and into the kitchen before they get inside. From there I'd run upstairs and wake my mom and stepdad; if we can get out the back door quickly we'd be able to run around the house and get in the car. If the intruders are already making their way through the house, imma grab a frying pan (easier for me to handle than a knife, still can get some power behind it in a small space, the big one's always on the stove anyway). If they don't back off, they get a fight.

tbh tho most burglaries here are committed in the late morning/early afternoon by young people who will flee at any sign of another human or any kind of resistance. I know that firsthand lmao a kid chucked himself right back out the window after I called "hello".

I would probably be toast, too. There isn't an exit upstairs, and you have to pass right next to the front door to go downstairs. If I was downstairs I could probably go out the back door, but then I would have to go around the side of my house and climb a fence in order to escape my property (the fence in the back of my backyard is too high to climb).

I have a big black lab that barks if he knows someone's at the front door. Would people really enter if they thought the dog probably woke up the occupants?

Well first I'd try to get out our shotgun out and load it facing the door so that if there really is someone trying to break in then they won't.

But if that isn't an option I have windows that open big enough for me to climb out of or I have a back door with 2 gates that I can get out of.

Well my computer is right by my back door and my phone is always right next to me. So I would grab my phone and quickly leave out the back door. From there I can just loop around the house to my neighbors and I'm good. I could even grab the car keys right off the microwave on my way out since that's right next to the back door and hop in any of the cars and drive away. Or instead of going to my neighbors or grabbing the keys I can just grab my phone and call the police while hiding behind my barn/garage/shed/giant wood pile/run into the woods. I have endless options lol.

Unless I were to somehow jump out the windows, which isn't a good idea here...

Then the only other option I'd have aside from my main door would be my balcony...which is in plain sight from the door and is a nice one-story drop to the ground below.

So, no, unless I can jump off that balcony quickly, I'd probably get caught no matter what I do. Yay apartments!

Then again, I could probably yell and have others nearby notice something's wrong and get help that way...maybe...so I dunno. That's most likely a bad idea too!

I'd walk back to my bedroom from the living room as silent as possible, quietly open my blinds, and get out through my bedroom window (which has no screen on it). My window also has a sensor on it, so that the alarm would go off as well.

I live by myself with my two cats. My bedroom is at the very end of the house/apartment. In my closet there are two shotguns and a 270 hunting rifle. The closet is four feet from me. Also, on the opposite side of the closet, there's a door leading out to the side of my house.

I think I'm good, I can escape to safety and ensure that whoever is brave enough to break into my house will be leaving either in a body bag or in an ambulance. 8D

Man, that's quite a predicament. Considering the layout of my house, most of the conventional escape plans are pretty much useless.

Climbing out of my window may initially seem like the best option. There's a balcony maybe ten or eleven feet below my window which I could jump to relatively safely. The only problem with that is the window facing said balcony; it's huge and shows the entire balcony, and it's visible from the front door. That means that when the sound of my impact reaches the burglars' ears, or they just look in the general direction of the balcony, I'll be caught. If I'm quick enough, I can jump down onto the closed lid of the hot tub below, which isn't much of a drop. However, I'll end up in my backyard, at which point my only option would be to go out front, where the burglars would be waiting, since they saw me. >_>

Under normal circumstances, I could move to my sister's room, which is right next to mine, and jump out of her window. There's no balcony there though, so it's a one story drop. Luckily, there's a giant pool I can jump into. Not so luckily, while that pool is normally full, right now it's been drained because there's a tear. Talk about bad luck.

The one story drop is still a possibility, but it too leads to the backyard, so to escape the premises I'd have to go out front. Since they didn't detect me this time, I could wait until they actually entered the house and then make my escape.

Damn, I wish I had more options.

This is why living in a flat has its major downsides. Only one exit and that's the front door. Can't jump out in any of the bedrooms because of the extremely limited gap that can't even fit a person through.

I have a five iron in my room. It's not intentional but since it's in my room and I've yet to play golf again, I've just left it there. There's nowhere in my house where it's advantageous to shoot a gun and I'd be able to get the element of surprise on my intruders twice by the time they had me cornered, even if they were armed. I'd have a good chance of survival and a good chance of a living mother that way.

Also an option is keeping my door barricaded; there's a lock on it and I could easily shove my heavy table of stuff to bolster the door's defences, which would give me time to make a 999 call; and they come pretty quickly to my house. I've made a 999 call in the past and gotten a response with a full team of police in 3 minutes... it was a drunk neighbour slamming against the window but I was still spooked, and didn't recognise them. Hasn't happened since...

Anyway. Escape options are bad. I could smash a window and pile clothes from my room to the ground to soften my landing, but it wouldn't be softened to the point where I'd avoid severe damage to my legs/possibly other parts of my body if I landed badly. It would take a long time to get my mattress out of my window, and I'd be better off just going with 999 that way.

not like my house is worth intruding though.

I have an automatic BB gun in my closet and a pocket knife in my drawer. I have 2 dogs (accumulate to 18 pounds). I would just yell to wake everyone up and scare away the burglars. If I couldn't, I would grab my cell phone and call 911. I have a back door next to my room , so I can sneak out back. There is also a big , long, and tall bush in my backyard that is in front of a wall. I can sneak through there, and end up at a little canal. There I would be safe.
