We made it to the future, ladies and gentlemen. We all saw this coming, haven't we? In movies such as Knight Rider and Inspector Gadget, we've seen watches that act like phones or walkie talkies so that way we can keep in contact with the other person on the line as we travel. These "smartwatches" are slightly different, and there are a few models. Not only they'll allow you to answer phone calls from your wrist, but some can also allow you to keep track of your work-out statistics, which makes it perfect for those of you who work out/jog/exercise. Even better, you can install applications on it, just like how you install applications on your smartphone or device.

Samsung already came out with one, which is a companion to the Galaxy S4. It is rumored that Apple may come out with one this Fall. There are many other brands of smartwatches, the one well known is Pebble and those cost around $250 USD to purchase. Sony also has their own line, but I haven't heard much of those.

Discuss the future of technology! What do you guys think of this technological advancement? Is it a deal or a dud? Do you find yourself using one sometime in the future? Why or why not?

I don't know how I feel about smart watches if I'm honest. Don't get me wrong they're a cool concept but for what people are charging for them I feel they are really underdeveloped.
I've only been able to play around with one purchased by my step dad but from what I've seen it was nowhere near worth the amount he paid for it. Currently his smart watch is capable of sending a tweet, showing text messages and receiving calls (though the majority of the time it is used as a notification system). Thats all, obviously there are more features available but seeing any one person use them all is a rarity. So for the price Candice is saying of $250 this is nowhere near seeing popularity. Perhaps in a couple of months/years time when we see some more apps released made specifically for these devices it'll seem reasonable but that's something that can only happen from a community building up behind it and I don't see that happening any time soon.

I don't personally find smartwatches really useful. I've tried out a friend's Galaxy Gear, but I was not too impressed by the functionality. I think that the only valid usecase for a smartwatch would be checking your notifications without having to pull out your phone, and as Hybrid Trainer has said above me, 250$ is really too much for notifications on your wrist...

Smartwatches may have a future, but I don't think incorporating features that you won't use anyway is part of that future.

I own a Pebble (The original smartwatch(The best smartwatch)) and I love it. Variety of watchfaces for anyone's taste, Apps for anyone (from workout trackers to tetris), answer phone calls, read texts, switch out my music. The little things that make life more convenient and me not have to pull out my huge Lumia 1020 (which is incompatible with my watch for the most part because Windows phones SUCK) Before my iPhone I found in a pile of hoard fell 7 feet my watch was amazing. Now it's just cool to play tetris in class without drawing much attention and have a cool way to look at the time. It tought me to be able to read a binary watch!

I want to purchase Sony Smart watches eventually but only because it's Sony product =D
I'm not particularly interested in smart watches, but I would love to accept calls with it when I cannot reach my phone =D
But the battery life is kinda pissing me off... like... having watch you need to charge each day or so isn't really welcoming =D

Smartwatches seem like a fun invention at first, but then I always ponder to myself: "are they really worth it?"

Nice to see this from a personal perspective! I can imagine that the apps can be... a little distracting? xD I'm actually surprised at the battery life it contains as well. A week is not that bad at all.

Under heavy usage, the sony watches last a full day on full charge so I can back that up. :P However, it is only compatible with Xperia phones only. :s

Apparently older also had some HTC compatibility...
Well, I have Xperia so I'm clear =D

Less processing power, more battery, I guess =D
But it also depends on its usage... if you don't use it, SSW can also hold for a week imo =D
