Hmm.... best items, huh.

Ravio's Bracelet - It made A Link Between Worlds. It was the game. Simple a great mechanic and well utilized everywhere. Turned exploration on its head.

Spinner - I enjoyed this item in Twilight Princess. It was entirely pointless and limited in where you could use it. But I found it fun.

Blast Mask - Basically infinite bombs. Haha. Plus the whole idea is just so fantastically loopy. Blow up your face. lol Just make sure you use your shield....

Double Clawshot - Twilight Princess again. This was just refreshing. And the scope it allowed in the dungeons was great. You could travel so far. Wish they'd revisit it. Maybe attach to two enemies and slam them together. Plus you could just hang around. It felt a bit like the Hookshot and Grappling Hook had a baby.

Boomerang - A classic. I try to use it over the bow when I can because I don't like depleting arrows. And I like how they've mixed it up over the years. Like hitting multiple targets

Bunny Hood - I can move fast! Without the loss of control the Pegasus Boots gives you.

Roc's Feather / Roc's Cape - I can jump! At long last Link can jump!

Deku Leaf - Best item in Wind Waker. I can stun people somewhat, provides a gust of wind when needed, and I can sore. Plus access to leftover baba buds. It's well utilized throughout the game in multiple ways

Zora's Mask - Fantastic swimming in Majora's Mask. I looked cool. And I had long range weapons

When it comes to the Legend of Zelda series, I have only played The Minish Cap, Phantom Hourglass, and A Link Between Worlds. So most of my favorite items come from those games. To be precise, my favorite items are:

Cane of Pacci - use to flip things over
Remote Bombs - You are in charge of when they detonate
Nice Bombs - larger blast radius and cause more damage than regular bombs
Nice Fire Rod - create larger pillar of flame and do more damage than regular Fire Rod
Nice Ice Rod - when using do more damage by dropping four blocks of ice
Nice Bow - fire three arrows at once.

So why does this game get so much hate but has such high reviews such as a 10/10 from IGN, 4.5/5 from Metacritic and 9.5/10 from Destructoid?

It seems kinda weird that many companies think the game is good but many other people dislike it.

People hate it? I hear nothing but praise about it normally. Although I'm about to give it a hard hit, haha. The beginning of the game makes me want to jump off Skyloft when all the Sky Knights are asleep so that I can hit the Surface and die. That race with motion controls? Terrible. Never again. But aside from that, it's really fun, even the motion controls. The story is compelling. I actually want to push through because I'm really interested in saving Zelda. I love her and Link's relationship in this game as well.

That being said, I'm not far into the game on my own, but I've seen an LP of the game as well as read through Hyrule Historia, which spends a lot of time talking about this game, so I'd like to think I'm fairly knowledgeable on it. But you know, with every great game, there are those that won't like it. I think there are more lovers than haters for this one though, so I wouldn't mind what negative things you hear about it. Plus, everyone is anxious for Hyrule Warriors and Zelda U. Being anxious for new things makes you put the latest on the backburner cause you're tired of it, like how most people are probably tired of XY in anticipation for ORAS.

I'm gonna stop talking now, haha. Said more than I thought I would.

I guess I read too many youtube comments but I literally see nothing but hate for the game ever since about a couple of months after its release. It doesn't help that Egoraptor made a rant about it during his Ocarina of Time vs A Link to the Past Sequelitis video. It only added more fuel to the fire.

I thought it was pretty standard Zelda (which means its pretty good). I wouldn't call it the best Zelda though. The world up in the clouds is so barren and there's so little to do up there, and there's a little more environment repetition than I'd like below the clouds. Then there was that puzzle when you first go to the isle of the Goddess; terrible puzzle, imo. Dunno how the hell you were supposed to figure that one out by yourself. And I felt that the part of the game where you have to complete the song of the Hero was pure padding and nothing else. But the rest of it was good. I liked the Silent Realm parts.

I thought that Twilight Princess (the Gamecube version, mind you) was better than Skyward Sword. That one also gets a lot of hate. But really, any popular game is gonna have its share of haters. Sometimes it just seems like everyone hates it cuz the haters are always so loud.

What Dawn Defect is referring to by the Egoraptor comment is in his new Sequelitis, which compares A Link To The Past with Ocarina of Time and points out the flaws in OoT that he thinks are really overlooked, as well as heavily criticizing the Nintendo series as a whole. Around the time stamp of 24:50 he goes into a rant about Skyward Sword, which I personally agree with. It's all and all a really good, well thought out video. I know it might seem long seeing that it's 30+ minutes, but I highly recommend watching the whole thing considering he makes it quite entertaining and insightful to watch (if you are sensitive to the f bomb being dropped well...a few of them are dropped, just as a warning.)

To be honest, I feel like that video lost credibility when you see how horrible of a gamer Arin is in his Game Grumps videos lmao. But hey that's just me.

I do agree that Ocarina of Time isn't the greatest game in the entire world like everyone makes it out to be. Then again, I'm not even a Zelda fan lol.

I do feel that he has some valid points, but I also feel like the video is rather laced with purely personal opinions. Which is gonna happen with any video game review. There is no such thing as a 100% objective video game review. A couple of points he kept stressing in the video was exploration and a "sense of mystery". He also comes off as rather impatient. So, yes, I can see why he personally wouldn't like Ocarina of Time or Twilight Princess or whatever. But does that mean those games are bad and the other games are good? Yes and no, since what makes a game good is more or less subjective (I'm sure we've all liked games that others have not and vice-versa). It depends on what you're looking for in a game (Fire Emblem Awakening is a good example of that).

For the most part anyway. I'm pretty sure we can all agree that Sonic '06 is a poorly made game.
To be honest, I feel like that video lost credibility when you see how horrible of a gamer Arin is in his Game Grumps videos lmao.
I don't see how this is relevant......

I do agree that Ocarina of Time isn't the greatest game in the entire world like everyone makes it out to be.
But I do agree with this.

Arin from Game Grumps is Egoraptor, the person who made that Zelda video up there ^
I got that, I just don't see how a person's gaming skill is relevant to a critique of a game or series.

I love Skyward Sword from beginning to end. The only thing that I can complain about it is the emphasis it has on motion control and Fi basically being Captain Obvious the majority of the time. I like Fi, but I am not entirely fond of what she has to say, because I roll my eyes, mash A, and say "I knowwwwww." Kinda like Navi in a way.

As for my statement on motion control, if you have ever seen me play video games, it becomes abundantly clear that motion control is my worst enemy. I am entirely too enthusiastic and erratic when I play games. I have a 62" TV in my house and **** was happening everywhere when I played that game. While hilarious to somebody watching, I was getting pretty frustrated. It takes getting used to.

Also, my favorite items from the series are the Double Clawshots (felt like Spiderman), the Dominion Rod, the Deku Leaf, and Tornado Rod. c:

Since this is a Zelda thread, I'd like to ask why fans of the series enjoy this series?

I really try to get into it. I've played Ocarina of Time on the Wii VC, and the 3DS port. I played Wind Waker HD and I played Skyward Sword. However I simply find myself getting bored really easily and changing the game to something like Kirby Triple Deluxe or Ultra Street Fighter IV. Like I feel Zelda is one of those games where you HAVE to invest a couple of hours to get stuff done, while in games like Mario and Kirby, I can jump into a level in small intervals and have a blast and save at any time. I guess it just bothers me when I have to save inside of a dungeon and I play the game again only to find myself back at Link's house or Hyrule Castle and having to back track all the way. I'm not a big puzzle guy either. Do I need to be a fan of puzzles to really enjoy the Zelda series?

I mean, I love the story/lore behind the series with all the deities and stuff and I really like the environment and character designs, especially Link, he's a cool looking character. It's just the gameplay that hinders my experience.

Skyward Sword did a lot right - dungeons, item upgrades, motion controls, music, dungeon-like overworld, etc. Heck, I even like the stamina bar! lol

But the game is soulless. It is empty. It feels like Spirit Tracks. Something is missing though I can't place my finger on it. You have one main town, and while flying is enjoyable... there's nothing to fly too. Just barren islands. It's like The Wind Waker but feels worse. More nothingness. Nothing to look at besides clouds.

With nothing to see and no NPCs to interact with, it's just... meh. Plus the overworld (belowground) division sucks. I'd rather it all be connected that flying around as a map selector

I don't think I could bring myself to watch that video. I guess my bias kicks in since Ocarina of Time is one of my favorite Zelda games, ranking 3rd on my overall top 10, in fact. But I don't think my little black heart could take a ripping of it. As much stock as I put into games, whether praises or even criticisms, I don't think a game or series deserves so much critique like in that video. I can't justify putting that much stock into reviewing a game with such harsh criticism in a serious manner. For laughs, sure, I could understand and I've ranted about bad games to be funny plenty of times, but not something like seriously ripping at it.

tl;dr Games were meant to enjoy. A serious rant and rip of a beloved game and even series is just something I'm personally not into watching. Just play the game. If you love it, great. If not, that's that.

Triforce, I think it was the horrible gameplay/environment segregation that ruined the games. You have this really limited means of traversal for the player and everyone else, yet you are the only one seen using it. Sure, you didn't see travelers in the other games, but its a huge wide field in most cases, you can assume that they're just out of sight. In ST and SS? Nope, it just doesn't work.Anyway, love the series to death. Grew up with the games, and I'm probably going to play them until the last one.
Personally, my favorite has to be TP. People are far too quick to judge this game. The structure might be similar to OoT, but the story is far from the same. Zelda never really needs saving, the companion is the real star with the hero being their tool, and the plot mcguffins are far more interesting. While the Master Sword does pop up in the middle after three dungeons, its only out of neccessity and not because of your goal for the first act. And unlike OoT, you go on the second act quest not to gain access to Hyrule Castle, but to gain access to the cause of everything. Hyrule Castle, much like the Master Sword were consequential events, and not direct effects of your actions. Its much better then what LttP and OoT did in terms of story, much like SS.
Speaking of LttP, I think TP is more like it then OoT. Sure, OoT follows the same plot, but the parallels are more apparent in TP. Saving a princess from the sewer prisons, Usuper/Wizard being controlled by Ganon, forest location for the MS, its all very similar.
As for SS, the game easily comes after MM for me. Interesting characters, excellent plot(the 3 act structure was amazing, don't tell me it wasn't), and the overall effect the game has on the series is enough for me to hold it in such a spot. Those final hours from the final dungeon, to the last shot of the game are easily the best final hours in the series. However, like T89 said, its missing something. Which may/may not be what I opened this post with.
I do not want to go through a list war, but my rankings have to be:
2D Zelda's
OoS/OoA
MC
LttP
LA
ALBW
ST
PH
Z1=Z2

3D Zelda's
TP
MM
SS
OoT=WW

The video isn't actually as bad as you may think. The major points he likes to make essentially are 1.) how most of the attack patterns of enemies have no difficulty to them because the difficulty is just an illusion made by how long you fight them 2.) there truly aren't any puzzles in them and 3.) there isn't really this sense of adventure in the game like in the first LoZ. I'm a huge fan of Ocarina of Time and even though the comedian had some good points and opened my eyes a little bit, I still love OoT. It's perfectly alright to hear criticism for a game and still like it; I know I did! The video isn't necessarily a rant like some people might think; rather, it's just an interesting point of view that not a lot of people have really taken about a beloved game. It's not like he just randomly throws insults to the game, but rather he takes a pretty close analysis of the game which puts it in an interesting new light.

Sorry if that was too long, I'm typing this from my phone and have real sense of longevity haha.

What is your favourite LoZ species/'race'?

By that I mean the Gorons, Zoras, Gerudo, Kookoris, etc, etc. Is there a specific type of species you liked the most? I for one tend to enjoy the Gerudos, since they have pretty interesting backstory in LoZ OoT, aha. But still, I like the Gorons too! They're all about family and brotherhood; makes you feel right at home. <33

I'm a big fan of the Korok and Rito from Wind Waker. I just love those little guys and the Rito were always neat to me, but it might be because of their music. :) Besides them, I love the Zora. The Domain was always a favorite locale of mine from Majora's Mask.
