I know what you mean.
I'm my eyes, essentials is way too easy, there's no challenge behind it, and there's certainly nothing much too learn, as long as you know how to click some buttons in RMXP, there's nothing to it.
Where as with ROM hacking, things like scripting, inserting, and indexing requires knowledge to learn. Making it somewhat more of a challenge, and my kind of game.
Since Essentials is easy, it's the kind of thing I'd use for a competition in a short period of time, since it's quick and easym and you can make a decent game in a short afternoon.
