By vocal, I mean in terms of generational wars when it comes to long-running game franchises. Whenever a new installment is released, there's always those group of fans who have been there since the beginning marking it as inferior for not living up to its predecessors, but there's also a new set of fans who enjoy playing those new titles. This resulted in flame wars between fans old and new, but it seems to be only common on the internet, and you don't much of it in real life. Let's take Pokémon as an example, knowing what this forum is associated with. When Ruby and Sapphire were new, fans panned the game for failing to live up to the legacy of the first two gens (Pokémon from GB games couldn't be transferred to the GBA games, the change in artistic style for the new mons, etc.), but it was also the new fans' very first Pokémon game, which best describes most of the members here with the announcement of ORAS. But seeing as Pokémon isn't the only fanbase that's suffering from this problem, I have ask you guys which video game fanbase is the most vocal of them all.

Tricky question...
I will follow my principles and go against Nintendo and say Final Fantasy.
You can once grow out of Nintendo games but... Once a FF fan, always as FF fan, I believe.

I feel the opposite. Once you've loved Nintendo, you will always love it. Even if you grow out of playing the games, you'll still be fond of Nintendo.

I think there's a vocal fanbase for Minecraft, actually. Not only does Mojang listen to what the fanbase wants, but they interact with their players on Reddit and Twitter daily. Those that want or desire a feature can be extremely vocal - to the point of its inclusion in game!

Super Smash Bros. is up there as well - comparing it to Minecraft more than anything else - when it comes to vocal fan bases I think because of a lot of tournaments that go on thanks in part because of Super Smash Bros. that a lot of players take very close attention to who is being added to the lineups, as well as the fact as analyzing each of the character's movesets and abilities to see if they are have either improved or been nerfed.

I'm surprised the regular Super Mario Bros. fan base isn't up there. I feel like a lot of games get flak because Nintendo isn't adding anything too new to the series (or at least that was the argument, considering Super Mario 3D Land did an excellent job incorporating so many new elements and enemies to the game that each level was a completely new experience.)

I'm gonna have to go with Pokemon. Like op said, people are always arguing about the "good old days" and how these new Pokemon lack originality compared to gen. 1's Pokemon. But not only that, people are always complaining about casual vs. competitive playing, and how Smogon ruined Pokemon by making all these restrictions. "Giratina is my favorite Pokemon and I can't play him because of smelly Smogon pooping on my party! :((("

I have to say Final Fantasy since I have played the majority of the games and know many people who have also played them. There's definitely hate between the generations of Square fans. Even just the other day when I was at my mom's house her boyfriend was watching me play XIII on my 360 and was complaining about how it was nothing like any of the games he grew up with and how much better they were.

He was telling the truth. Final Fantasy has a very divided fanbase :< myself included in that bracket haha.

You only have to go on Dorkly to see that Pokemon fans dominate everything and are pretty vocal about it too - whether they're Genwunners or whatever.

The flak usually comes from the New Super Mario Bros. games, other than that, the fanbase is pretty tamed, unlike the Sonic fanbase, in which no matter what direction SEGA takes the franchise, the fans will always complain. Kind to think of it, Sonic seems to be getting zero votes here.

Pokemon fans. I never hear the end of generational wars. I guess that's because I've been on PC so long and modded a bunch of the Pokemon gaming forums, so my answer is probably pretty sheltered. But even when I talk to people I know in person about the series, the opinions really vary around and people really like to give their opinion on things in the series. You don't even have to ask. If Pokemon is brought up, it immediately goes to "they're running out of ideas" or something of the like. Not even always that, but just general talk. Plus, most people can talk about Pokemon from at least one generation they played. It's something a lot of people can relate to and have an opinion on, whether they played only the first generation or all generations.

I can't believe I forgot about Sonic! Admittedly, I'm pretty guilty about being one of those unpleasable fans when it comes to Sonic. :p

I like how people say these newer Pokemon are uncreative while trying to pass off Ditto and Magnemite as creative designs.

From what I often see on other websites, Pokémon fans can be quite difficult to please when a new batch of Pokémon is announced, to the point where when I say that I like the new Pokémon, I feel like I'm saying the most controversial thing in the world. In my book, in terms of lack of ideas, nothing beats generation 1 where the Nidoran family was included in the list twice with minor alterations.

But the one fanbase that I voted for was Sonic. It's always about the presentation with these people, and every time it gets worse and worse. I admit, I like Sonic games, but with time I grew to loathe the most vocal part of the fandom with a passion, and now I completely disassociate myself from them.

The first ridiculous thing was the voice cast change in 2005. I recently finally got to play Shadow the Hedgehog, and all I can say is this: the new voice cast was the least of the game's problems, if it was even a problem. The voices were all close enough to the original ones, and I even think that if Sega didn't announce it to the world that they were replacing the voice cast, most people wouldn't notice. Besides, I love how people love to single out Jason Griffith replacing Ryan Drummond as Sonic in 2005, and bash on him because of that, but completely fail to notice how the three games where Sonic was voiced by Drummond didn't have consistent voice cast for other major characters: while Amy and Eggman's actors remained the same, Knuckles' voice actor was replaced after Adventure 1, and Tails' voice actor changed in every game. And yes, I'm speaking in present tense: last week, I watched an interview on Youtube with Sonic's current voice actor, Roger Craig Smith, and then made the mistake of reading the comments. The Drummond/Griffith argument, for some reason is still ongoing, even though Drummond hadn't voiced Sonic in over a decade, and I don't think he even remembers how to do his voice nowadays.

Another ridiculous thing was the Sonic 4 debacle, and my favorite part was when a very special someone called AKnotholeResident made that ridiculous rant about how the game will suck because Sonic has green eyes. Admittedly, the Sonic 4 games had issues, but none of them were related to Sonic's eye color. And now, another news made the fanbase explode: Sonic's new design in the spinoff (yes, spinoff, as in "not having any lasting impact on the core franchise") game Sonic Boom. Not because of the bandages or the neckerchief, but because he has blue arms!

And let's not forget the fandom's violent reaction to Sonic Lost World's mediocre score on IGN, if memory serves. In general, this fandom seems to live in a bubble and hate all criticism towards the series, even if it's wll deserved. It reminds me of a Youtube video where a guy reviewed Sonic Genesis (the horrendous GBA port of Sonic 1) and told how bad it was. A Sonic fanboy posted a comment saying that the reviewer was a [insert expletive here] and had no right to say that about any awesome game in the awesome series that is Sonic. When I tried to calm the guy down by saying that the issues the reviewer had were not with the game itself, but rather with the abysmal job that was done porting it to the GBA, all I got in response was more expletives.

Again, I'm not talking about the entire fanbase, just about the vocal part. There are good people in the Sonic fanbase. For instance, just not so long ago, the Youtube channel HellfireComms, associated with their own self-proclaimed ripoff BrainScratchComms, held a Sonic marathon for charity. Those people, I admit, I like and hold in high regard. However, people like this in the fanbase seem to be very, very few.

Fans of the first Dark Souls game are essentially supercharged Genwunners on crack. Every single post of theirs is just something negative about the second game. Seriously, screw them. The second game is awesome and all of their complaints are irrelevant.

A close second would have to go towards Pokemon. I'm not completely anti-Smogon. Hell, I've been playing competitive for over 5 years now. But some of them need to lose that sense of entitlement. I catch so much trash talk for using "inviable" Pokemon like Mantine or Sandslash even though I consistently win with them, and when I do win with them, peoples' excuses are that I was facing someone that "sucked" when they have no proof of that and it just isn't true. Smh

And don't even get me started on the "PC master race". Sorry I'm having fun in a different method than you. I'll be sure to adjust it because you don't like it.

I'm surprised more people haven't said Sonic. If you delve into the Sonic fanbase you're gonna find so much drama and so many different opinions. You've got the classic era purists, the people who praise the Dreamcast titles but say that the newer ones have gone to ****, the modern era lovers, the Sonic X lovers, the Sonic X haters, the Archie Comics haters, the Sally haters, the Amy lovers, the Amy haters, the Silver haters, the Shadow haters, the Silver and Shadow lovers, the OC creators, the OC haters... and the list goes on. They're even separated by which voice actors they prefer.

NEW TOPIC!

Who would you guys say has the BEST (but still most vocal) fanbase?
I would say the Minecraft fanbase for its large community. You can easily create anything from the environment around, not to mention its machinima videos.

The sonic fanbase is leaps and bounds beyond anything I've ever seen. The ungodly amount of questionable fanart and its continued popularity among those kinds of people is perplexing to say the least, but ever since the Sonic Cycle supposedly ended there's been much less vitriol all around.

I'd also give an honorable mention to the Souls series. As a whole the fanbase had problems since the beginning, but Bamco's marketing attracted the most closed minded, elitist armchair game designers this side of Devil May Cry. I also hate the reputation that it was given, to the point where any remotely difficult game is known as "the Dark Souls of x series/y genre".

I guess the Final Fantasy fanbase sucks too with its nonstop tier lists, but there seems to be quite a bit of friendly and critical discussion once the tiers die down. I think the community gets a lot of undeserved hate honestly, especially considering the sheer size of the base.

When I hear "most vocal" I always jump right to the most snobby/elitist.
But then again, that would be less vocal, since it's only an elite group.
So, my vote goes to the most vocal anti-casual player group among the franchises listed.

I mean, come on, the group hated brawl since it made the game too casual-player friendly and created their own game engine, project m.

The nice thing about pokemon, regardless of generational wars is that the casual player and the metagamers tend to get along better. Plus, the metagame itself is more intuitive to learn.

Spending hours learning how to perfect countless pro gamer mechanics *cough cough* glitches for SSB...no thanks. (As I get older, I get less and less free time, so I don't really have a choice.)

I Voted for SSB.
