From what I often see on other websites, Pokémon fans can be quite difficult to please when a new batch of Pokémon is announced, to the point where when I say that I like the new Pokémon, I feel like I'm saying the most controversial thing in the world. In my book, in terms of lack of ideas, nothing beats generation 1 where the Nidoran family was included in the list twice with minor alterations.
But the one fanbase that I voted for was Sonic. It's always about the presentation with these people, and every time it gets worse and worse. I admit, I like Sonic games, but with time I grew to loathe the most vocal part of the fandom with a passion, and now I completely disassociate myself from them.
The first ridiculous thing was the voice cast change in 2005. I recently finally got to play Shadow the Hedgehog, and all I can say is this: the new voice cast was the least of the game's problems, if it was even a problem. The voices were all close enough to the original ones, and I even think that if Sega didn't announce it to the world that they were replacing the voice cast, most people wouldn't notice. Besides, I love how people love to single out Jason Griffith replacing Ryan Drummond as Sonic in 2005, and bash on him because of that, but completely fail to notice how the three games where Sonic was voiced by Drummond didn't have consistent voice cast for other major characters: while Amy and Eggman's actors remained the same, Knuckles' voice actor was replaced after Adventure 1, and Tails' voice actor changed in every game. And yes, I'm speaking in present tense: last week, I watched an interview on Youtube with Sonic's current voice actor, Roger Craig Smith, and then made the mistake of reading the comments. The Drummond/Griffith argument, for some reason is still ongoing, even though Drummond hadn't voiced Sonic in over a decade, and I don't think he even remembers how to do his voice nowadays.
Another ridiculous thing was the Sonic 4 debacle, and my favorite part was when a very special someone called AKnotholeResident made that ridiculous rant about how the game will suck because Sonic has green eyes. Admittedly, the Sonic 4 games had issues, but none of them were related to Sonic's eye color. And now, another news made the fanbase explode: Sonic's new design in the spinoff (yes, spinoff, as in "not having any lasting impact on the core franchise") game Sonic Boom. Not because of the bandages or the neckerchief, but because he has blue arms!
And let's not forget the fandom's violent reaction to Sonic Lost World's mediocre score on IGN, if memory serves. In general, this fandom seems to live in a bubble and hate all criticism towards the series, even if it's wll deserved. It reminds me of a Youtube video where a guy reviewed Sonic Genesis (the horrendous GBA port of Sonic 1) and told how bad it was. A Sonic fanboy posted a comment saying that the reviewer was a [insert expletive here] and had no right to say that about any awesome game in the awesome series that is Sonic. When I tried to calm the guy down by saying that the issues the reviewer had were not with the game itself, but rather with the abysmal job that was done porting it to the GBA, all I got in response was more expletives.
Again, I'm not talking about the entire fanbase, just about the vocal part. There are good people in the Sonic fanbase. For instance, just not so long ago, the Youtube channel HellfireComms, associated with their own self-proclaimed ripoff BrainScratchComms, held a Sonic marathon for charity. Those people, I admit, I like and hold in high regard. However, people like this in the fanbase seem to be very, very few.
