So for anyone who doesn't keep up with official Pokemon tourneys, the 2014 world championships concluded earlier this week; only days ago. Lots of interesting things went down, strategies played out, and new and old stalwart teams were shown off. The standout wild card, and unexpected champion of this year's tournament, was undoubtedly the new world champion's Pachirisu. For your consideration, here - is that final match consisting of 2 battles between the finalists.

As you can see; it's not a joke. This is a serious competitive usage; of Pachirisu - to great success. "Great success" - being a drastic understatement, as this guy is now the world champion of the Pokemon games in the Masters Division. I for one; could not be happier and more pleasantly surprised, by such a rarely seen pokemon making such a dramatic impression on the competitive community.

So what do y'all think of this? Hate it? Love it? Shake your head in disbelief?

All I got to say is, that garchomp needs some steroids that earthquake barely scratch him

Gotta hand it to Se Jun, nobody knew what to do against Pachirisu. The bulk was not forseen.

Whatever works, man.

But I think everyone is sort of missing the bigger picture: how in the world do you become a commentator for the Pokemon World Championships? Is that something you tell your parents? Does it become a bad pick-up line? Do you put that on your commentator resume? I can't believe they have commentators. Do they do prep? I'm legitimately blown away atm.

xD The commentators have actually gotten considerably BETTER this year. If you want a cringeworthy experience, listen to 2012's world champion match. Or even 2014's nationals. I sh*t you not; this is a line from one of their mouths - "Yes indeed, ____ is looking very unnerved by his opponent right now, and not an Aerodactyl to be seen on the field." -_-

Or try the constant mistakes they would make a few years ago, because they had people who didn't even know competitive pokemon commentating. Some guy legitimately didn't know what an attack did, commenting on the world finals. x (

No, this year - I'm glad the commentators were actually aware of what was going on, and were able to track it fluently.

Haha, it wasn't too bad, I'm just infinitely amused by the fact that they exist at all. It's like when my cousin jokes that ESPN would cover some cats and dogs fighting in an alley. Same thing here: there's commentary for that? I just think it's the funniest thing. Pokemon commentators. Yes!

(For the record, the intent of my questions was about 30% humor and 70% legitimate curiosity. How do you even get roped into that job? Ahahahahaha.)

Anyway, I'll leave y'all alone now, but I do want to say that a bad Pokemon commentary compilation thread might be the most necessary thing I had never thought of.

"And I shoulda gone with U Turn instead, because it woulda been super effective on both of them!"

I had to close it lol
No comment on Pachirisu though?
I was thinking earlier, "Why not togekiss instead of Pachirisu for that role?" Buuuut, even with togekiss' naturally waaaay higher stats, and immunity to dragon and earthquake - I think Se Jun didn't want the ice, rock, and electric weaknesses. Togekiss wouldn't want to redirect thunderbolts, wouldn't handle rock slides as well, and wouldn't want to redirect ice beams from garchomp either. Pachirisu also breaks focus sashes and ignores taunt with nuzzle over thunder wave, although I'm not sure how many Tourney players were in fact using taunt. So I guess togekiss is kind of- sorta outclassed, at least with his team - by Pachirisu lol

Eh no comment because he picked it because it fulfilled a certain role and had a niche in vgc meta. A lot of people think it will open the floodgates for any poke to be viable but on a deeper level you can see this isnt true. I guess pachirisu is there to aid talon and gyara who are the main sweepers

I agree. It's not like Pachirisu was secretly a god in meta play all along; it's the same as it's been + nuzzle in this generation, and as you can see nuzzle wasn't the only thing he needed it for. I don't think people are gonna start flocking to Pachirisu either - even in vgc or doubles style matches. Like you said it was a niche; and the fact that it was so useful was only because of the situations he put it in. Alongside its teammates Pachirisu did something no other pokemon could copy exactly, which nobody was fully prepared for since it was at the time of that tournament, basically unseen on a competitive level.

So again, no - I don't think there's going to be a massive Pachirisu usage influx because of this (as much as I'd love that) but I hope it's a wake up call for the shallow innovation level of most competitive teams, and would not be surprised - if this gave at least a small bump to the diversity of pokemon that saw usage. If only for encouraging people to try their own things, instead of sticking to only about 5 % of all pokemon, which everyone else holds to.

Togekiss is banned in 2014 format. So that's why you don't see Togekiss or old annoying threats like Cresselia. Only things that are found in the Kalos Pokedex is allowed.

I don't remember when TPCi started having announcers but the early ones were bad enough that they got bombarded with complaints and offers to do it better. Scott and Evan (not sure about Duy) all have experience commenting already for tournaments on NuggetBridge as well as their own battles. A bunch of people managed to rope up some streaming at regionals and you would hear these guys and some others do commenting (these weren't supported by TPCi but they gave a thumbs up).

Recently (I think it was winter), TPCi put out a call for applications to do commenting for them. They applied, got accepted, and you guys saw the results.
