I must confess to a certain level of obsession with Rogue-Like video games ever since I discovered what they were and played Fatal Labyrinth on a whim from my Sega Genesis collection for Xbox 360. As of yet, it's still the only one I have finished, as many of them are extremely difficult.

For those of you who don't know what a Rogue-Like is, it can be defined as a Role Playing Game played from a top down view, which has a randomly generated world and perma death, all features of a very old game called Rogue.. One of the most popular examples is a game called NetHack, but if you want something newer and more accessible, I suggest trying out Pokemon's own Mystery Dungeon series, which uses much of the Rogue-Like structure, but minus the perma death.

So, is anyone else on here a fan of the sub genre? Have you played any Rogue-Likes that stood out as particularly good?

I had this game that was on my windows phone back 2 or 3 years ago that was rogue like. It didn't have the permadeath part but it did punish you for dying by docking you by about half of your levels and making you lose anything you didn't or couldn't equip to your party meaning no potions or anything would be able to go with you if you died and any good armor that you were too weak to use was also lost as well as all of your money. It was fun but it was kinda cheap sometimes and it made for a lot of hard work when you got to around the 100 level mark because the enemies were either too hard for you to beat or you could beat them but gained maybe 1 or 2 exp out of the 100 something thousand that you needed to level up and then you had to go down to level 45-50 if you died and still get 100 thousand + exp points for a single level, so I often opted out of 'continuing' and I would just start new games. But it was pretty fun since I am a fan of spending days trying to level to the point where I can only really die if I do something extremely stupid time after time after time after time.

Rogue Legacy is an excellent Rogue game. It's a hack and slash kind of game where one gains new power ups and abilities and armor upgrades to traverse deeper into a castle where danger lurks around ever corner. There's about five bosses in the game, each within a section of the castle which is essentially suicide if your not a high enough level. Probably one of the coolest things about this game is that the level design and enemy placement is made completely by random, as well as the attributes for your hero each time you start fresh with a new one. For instance, your character could be super duper fast, take a lot of hits, only see in monochromatic (meaning all colors of the screen will fade to grey), even some where your controls are reversed or the screen is literally flipped and you have to play the game upside. It adds this degree of fun and adventure that I think a lot of games don't have nowadays. It's only like, $5-$10 on Steam I believe, and I highly recommend that people should play it; I'll post a link to a trailer for the game when. I get a chance.

Haha, I should confess a certain obsession with them lately, myself. They're just SO addicting! Oops, died again, but maybe next time I'll get better items. Oh.. dead again. Let's try that again, I can do it this time!

Boyfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed playing Risk of Rain, and that's the only one I've finished thus far. Probably because it's a fairly easy one, especially if you're not playing it alone. Though by 'finish', I mean that I got 100% achievements on Steam, though I'm still missing a few in-game achievements.. and the Miner.

I love Spelunky, but Spelunky doesn't love me. It can be hard for me to find a balance sometimes. Take too long and the ghost of instant-death appears. Usually right by the exit because he has a horrible sense of humor. Rush through and you wind up doing something stupid, like not looking before you drop and.. impaling yourself on some spikes. Spikes are my worst enemy.
Well, those and the Shopkeepers I accidentally anger on nearly every run. Oops.

One of the most popular examples is a game called NetHack, but if you want something newer and more accessible, I suggest trying out Pokemon's own Mystery Dungeon series, which uses much of the Rogue-Like structure, but minus the perma death.
There's also WazHack, as a more modern suggestion. :)
It takes a lot of what made NetHack great and makes it into a more modern, side-scrolling game. With 3D models, even. It still differs plenty - there's no praying or sacrificing, for example - but it manages to give you a similar feeling. Y'know, that feeling of being dumped in a dungeon and left for dead. Also completely wrecking your run with some cursed boots that make you levitate forever, now you can't pick up items. I shouldn't have laughed at Boyfriend for that. :c
