You play a game and you have the option to build your character however you want. You can be a mage, a knight, a rogue, a berserker, whatever. What do you choose? Are you more of a sit in the back and range things and try to take as little damage as possible, or are you more of a go to the front lines and wreck things type of person? Also, when you pick the sex of your character do you prefer playing as your own gender, or do you prefer to play as the opposite? Does it really matter to you? Are you content on playing a certain kind of character or do you like to mix it up when you have the chance to make your own character?

When the game permits it, I usually like to play bulky and very in your face, so I build with tanking in mind. In fantasy settings, I do find mages to be fun, if a little bit frustrating at times. I almost always play male characters, not because I have anything against female characters, but when who I play is somewhat representative of myself, I like my character to be as much like me as possible.

When I played Diablo 2 LoD for 8 years, I was almost always going with character builds that use ranged magic damage, like Sorceress(any element), Paladin (Blessed Hammer) or Necromancer (Summoner, Poison and Bone magic). While playing Terraria I also discovered that I can play with various builds and I mostly ended up playing as a Warrior (melee damage) since the melee weapons were really powerful and some of them were ranged as well. Character gender doesn't mean anything to me. I play the character what I'm feeling like playing.

If I can choose what to build and the game has options for replayability, I generally choose a swords'n'shields-kinda guy with some general abilities. I tend to like to explore every aspect of a game on my first go-around, but I try to leave some things for future replays. :)

I usually play as a jack-of-all-trades kind of character if given the chance. It allows me to try out most of the different stuff the game has to offer characters. I also get a bit paranoid and don't wanna end up in a situation where, say, magic makes a fight ten times easier than trying to use a melee weapon but you don't have magic. It helps deal with boredom anyway. Get tired of playing as an assassin? Put on yer heavy armor and go to town with that battleaxe. Get tired of that? Put on yer wizard hat and start blasting your enemies with exploding fireballs.

I love sweepers of any kind, I'd probably go with any Thief, Ninja, Assassin or Hero class with high speed and high attack with moderate defenses. Which is why I love having Gaius in my Fire Emblem Awakening unit. :)

I'm a pretty stubborn player myself. I don't tend to use too much strategy, I rather just rush up to the enemy and bash its head in so I usually build my character to be more of a berserker type and denounce magic and ranged attacks, those things really just upset me and make me mad and want to kill them even more.

Regarding the gender, I could honestly care less about, so it's whatever for me for that part. As for the class, I often take the mage path. I find it more fun playing with ranged arsenals than physical arsenals. I know there's archers, but I find mages more appealing to me.

In open-world RPGs, I usually have separate characters to plan and use different builds with, but usually, I go with a melee attacker first, like a warrior or something. There's less strategy involved since they're generally better at taking hits than classes in light armor, like mages and rangers, and as melee attackers you don't really need skill or aim to outlive enemies. But once I get a hang of the game and am more comfortable with the mechanics, I will branch out with different characters to try other builds.

Since a lot of game systems encourage specialisation, I may end up poorly-rounded instead, so to speak, but I prefer to have a well-rounded build with no particular strengths besides high HP. That said, as archetypes go I'm mostly warrior-oriented. I generally play games with active skill-based combat as opposed to something entirely number-driven, so skill at arms as a great degree of appeal in that regard, and shooting arrows or magic bolts one after the other has far less, and is usually very annoying to do since most enemies fight at melee range themselves; kiting feels really cheesy and tedious. I also like to play with unusual setups, once I'm comfortable with the game, and provided they aren't too finicky to control. One of my first things to try is status, namely poison when a game makes it viable; unfortunately it generally ranges in extremes, from completely useless to extremely dangerous depending on the game, and it usually ends up being the former.

I tend to go with the mage build if I'm given the choice. Eg. Terraria, RF3, Pokemon (as in all of them are strong in Sp.Atk)...

But if Melee's the only option available then I tend to go with Sword and Shield, or Dual Blades. But yeah, I really prefer using ranged magic attacks more.

It varies a lot between games.

I've been playing ME3 recently, and I've gone through quite a few characters and builds in mp. Here's some of the builds I'm using right now, with the current level items they are using.

Whenever I'm able to, I try to make my characters magic based. I just really love magic in most games, and I'm not the biggest fan of brute strength. I do like stealth builds, though. I feel like a ninja sneaking around doing things.
