An interesting thing I found out that those people find money the source of happiness who lack money, but those who have enough money don't want to earn it in any price. "Poor" may look greedy and trashy, but mostly they are just desperate.

I try not to judge people on how they spend their money. Everyone does things that might not be the most logical decision based on emotions and humanness, and everyone wastes money. To criticize them is to open myself up to accusations of hypocrisy.

Wow, judge much? I wouldn't be friends with anyone who thought I was trashy for buying a few lottery tickets or scratchcards so everyone's happy then.

I don't like my bank balance being at a weird number so if I have like $453 then I'll take those 3 dollars and buy some lottery tickets, if I win then yippee and if I don't then oh well I did what I came to do. I've probably wasted like 50 bucks that way.

I don't know if I can say that, as it is always old people who seem really nice and always trying to find that winning number. I would go more along the lines of naive rather then trashy and all that other stuff. Logically speaking what are the odds and if they knew would they still play? I personally don't, so yeah I think you might be a little harsh grouping a few into the majority, just saying.

In my 20 years of blessed life I have fortunately only met one person who blows almost all their money on scratch tickets and is also greedy, trashy, and lazy. So yes this can occur, but besides that everyone else I know that plays frequently are usually middle aged everyday people.

If anything you should be friends with people who play the lottery often. If they win maybe they'll celebrate with you. THINK OF THE POSSIBILITIES

There's a big difference between buying a lottery ticket or two every week and spending all of your money gambling. Regardless, even though I'm not personally a major lottery ticket buyer, I always think of them as a good high-risk, high-reward portion of a portfolio. Are you wasting your dollar, or two dollars, or whatever your local lottery ticket costs? Probably. But winning would really make a difference financially (for most people), and buying a ticket also allows you to dream about what you would do if you did win the money (and since you have a stake in the game, it's not a 100% impossible dream). I think that dream, and its potential yield, can be worth it.

Now, there's obviously a limit, and if you're spending your money on lottery tickets and not on food, rent, etc., then that's a problem. But regular lottery ticket purchases, if done within your means, are fine.

How could you even say that? Like you haven't wasted you're money on something on occasions? Come on, admit it, we've all wasted our money on something. So no I don't find it trashy and greedy. But I find it stupid if they blow all their money on it.

i feel like people who buy lottery very often are lazy, greedy and trashy. I would not be friend with anyone who buy lottery often.
Guess we wouldn't be friends then. Not because I buy lottery tickets, but because you make such a superficial assumption.

Gambling all your money on cards is maybe overdoing it, but spending money on lottery is not selfish. I am pretty sure that most people doing it are hoping to get money cos they dont have any.

Lottery tickets are pretty cheap, so it's not really a waste(Not that someone should judge how others use their own money). I don't know if you know, but everyone isn't rich. Many people just try their luck to get some money. To either pay debt, bills or just go on a vacation or buy a car.

I don't know, it's just really offensive to generalize people like that.

dogtree's thread would have gotten less heat if he posted this in the unpopular opinions thread as his reply. Just saying.

I rarely buy lottery tickets because I know the chances to win are very slim so I try not to waste my time.

Lottery tickets are considered gambling? *checks Pokemon X and discovers that I'm in the lotto ID place*

Some people buy such things for fun, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. If they can manage their bills and expenses well, there is nothing wrong buying a lottery ticket once in a while. I have never purchased a lottery ticket before ever since I turned 18, and my parents rarely do. If my friends ask money from me just to buy lottery tickets I will reject them firmly, but I believe that as long as you know what you're doing and know how to manage, there's absolutely no problem with buying lottos.

However, excessive buying... Placing big bets... That's a problem. Continued excessive buying could possibly lead to addiction. If they can easily earn their spendings back it wouldn't be so bad, but that is usually not the case. I'll guess dogtree phrased his opinion wrongly? That said, greedy and trashy are really 'terrible' terms to describe people.

Oh hey, I guess we can't be friends.

If you're just buying tickets just for fun, then I would still be friends with you. I mean, it's all for fun, and who knows you'll end up winning something.

If you're an excessive gambler (as in going to horse races and placing big bets, buying a ton of lottery tickets, etc.), then yeah, you're being either lazy or desperate.

Most certainly not "trashy" or greedy. We buy them occasionally and most recently won $50 on a $20 ticket (which is too expensive for me to buy but dad insisted we try one). My lottery luck seems to be pretty good in general. Soon enough I'll win that 10k a week for life.

I can dream, can't I?

I buy lotto scratchers every so often. I enjoy the thrill of hope at possibly winning, while also maintaining low expectations of victory. :P There's nothing trashy about buying lotto tickets, scratchers, or even gambling. It's a fun and entertaining way to spend some time and experience some thrill, so long as you do not take it overboard.
