I hate playing online and always prefer local multiplayer. It's just more fun to play video games when you have your friends near you and you're both laughing and shouting together. Online multiplayer just feels like you're playing against smarter A.I.

Of course you can use Skype and stuff but it's just less of a hassle to set things up when everyone is in the same room.

I don't mind Online Multiplayer but I really love local multi player, especially on Fighting, Racing and Football (Soccer) games. I spent lots of time playing local multiplayer as a kid with my friends, and of course we still do, Last night at my friends house we had a bumper mutiplayer gaming night on Mortal Kombat, Capcom v Marvel, Fifa 13 and Arcana Hearts 3 lol, all the more fun when one of your friends is no fan of video games so everyone beats him because he has no idea whats happening.

Online can be really fun if I know who I'm playing against and stuff, and is more convenient when you're trying to fill up your in-game lobby/room/whatever than trying to get everyone in one spot for local.

Online is also the worst thing on the planet when you do ranked or whatever and get matched up with either the Mountain Dew chugging neckbearded basement dwellers, the little girls dying for attention in one group screaming on the mic, and the middle school boys whose vocabulary is apparently only limited to f***** and b****.

Lmao, those and the Japanese players are annoying to face because they're like masters of the game and exploit every little thing about it to the point where I'm better off not even playing.

Online multiplayer. More challenges and opportunities compared to local multiplayer.

It all depends for me. Some games are more fun when played locally, while others are more or less vice-versa, and you'd find yourself enjoying when online and whatnot. I suppose these are how some games were built and made focused towards, in some way.

Off top of my head, one game that I like playing local multiplayer in would have to be Mario Kart. You're versing against friends in a race, and it's quite entertaining to be watching their expression and reactions every time they get themselves into trouble--getting struck by a Red Shell, for example. It's fun to play such games online, too, but you won't get the same experience, unfortunately.

As for online multiplayer, I feel games like Call of Duty is more about that. Although it could be amusing to play locally due to similar reasons as above, but negative side is that CoD requires you to give all your attention to the game at all times, so you'd have little to no chance to notice what others are doing. Online, however, you would have nobody playing beside you, which means no distractions. With that, you wouldn't have much trouble with focusing on what's going on at your end, and do your team more good than not.

If you happen to have a microphone, you wouldn't have much problem communicating with your mates, either. I personally don't have any, but I did use one before--which wasn't mine; it was my friend's--and if you ask me, it adds more to the fun. I'd proceed to buy one if I could, but they're just too expensive, unfortunately. There are cheap ones, but their sound in and output quality usually isn't that great.

Local that allows me to play by myself or with more controllers.
I only use online for trophies so... I hate random online encounters :/

I think all and all it depends solely on the game you are playing. For instance, if I was playing Halo with friends, I would prefer Online Multiplayer just because I wouldn't want to share a split screen with someone. Plus, it will promote screen looking which will just be a bad time to say the least. Games like Mario Party though where everyone has the same screen in front of them makes the game have a more enjoyable experience. While I'm a little sad that local multiplayer has become such an afterthought in this generation, I really am happy to see the intuitive discovery of online multiplayer because it has most definitely revolutionized the way we play games nowadays.
