So the other day, I was watching GameTrailers' Top 10 Pointless Pokémon video, which they open up admitting they weren't about to poke at Vanilluxe and Klefki, saying those Pokémon are awesome. Instead, their video was about what they felt were the top 10 most pointless Pokémon, that nobody would remember if they were completely retconned from the series. It was one person doing the count, and he had some valid points, but #5 was a surprising one: Arceus.

The guy who picked that top ten said that Arceus, while not weak, is not great as a deity and a "spiky no-face horse god that shaped the universe with its thousand arms and sits in a Poké Ball in your PC between Grimer and Bidoof all day". He thinks Game Freak went a little too far in trying to make something like that.

Some people may think that based on the fact that the Azure Flute was never even released in Generation IV, or for some other reason. But what about you? Do you think this Pokémon that formed in an egg that shaped the world from nothing has no purpose or was it necessary to begin Pokémon life as it stands today? Discuss.

You could argue that a lot of the Pokemon made are "pointless". Pretty much no Pokemon is absolutely vital to the existence of the Pokemon world.

I think that people's problem with Arceus is that it's yet another legendary Pokemon (and Gen 4 introduced an assload of legendaries) that's thrown at us, and that it's not undefeatable like you'd think a god would be. Although Arceus's deity status seems to be one of the more debated Pokemon topics.

I'm indifferent on Arceus's purpose, it's not pointless but it's not something to worship either. :( However, I don't think that saying 'omg you have to get the azure flute to capture arceus what's the point of it if the rest of us can't get it because of x reason' is a valid argument either. :p You could say that but letting everyone get their hands on an event pokemon would make it lose its speciality and all the 'loluhacker :0" comments you get from using Arceus. Of course, there's always the usage of the GTS and cloning so free Arceus for a Bidoof anybody? :D but yeah while most people capture Arceus as a collectible, that's just its purpose as an event Pokemon (other than actually being used on your team to beat the crap out of everybody with space goats ^^;)

Anyway your last point about Arceus potentially shaping the Pokemon universe as it is today was something interesting to consider. But if Arceus created the world from nothing - including Pokemon - does that mean Mew is really the ancestor of all Pokemon or is Arceus just classified as an alien? :p While it's true that this so called creator of the universe rots in most people's PCs for all eternity (which sounds really depressing now that I think about it ;_;), its still left a big impact on the series - bringing lore, theories and being the legendaries of legendaries to the table. Personally I think GF wanted to portray Arceus as the god of the Pokemon world or as a creature above legendaries/from another universe but that's as much as I could get from it. :( it's definitely not pointless though :)

For me I just find it confusing that they would introduce a god Pokemon in the fourth generation for them to then make two more generations after it. I feel like the god of all Pokemon would be a huge build up and would debut last so it seems kind of odd I guess. Or honestly to be a god maybe it should of deserved its own game rather than a throw in with Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina being the stars in front. But then maybe as a god it should be more elusive?

It's hard for me to really place my opinion. Overall I don't really care about legendaries and I generally don't count them for a lot of things. Even though it's a "god", to me it's just another legendary. They churn out so many now in each game that they no longer seem that special.

I agree with some points Virgo made. To put in "lesser" legendaries after first the weather trio which felt like gods in a way and then gods over space, time, essentially hell and then also the very creator itself... It was going too far imo.

It's one thing to be able to capture fabled monsters like the regis and weather trio of Hoenn. But quite another to be able to capture beings that shaped space, time and the whole world. Imo, Arceus should have been mentioned and even featured but not able to be captured. Really, I think they should have made it even harder to get your hands on than Mew in gen I and possibly even not a scripted pokémon at all in-game. Or at least a pokémon that beat you when you came into battle with you, no matter what you tried. Level >100 and pokéballs wouldn't work.

That would have made Arceus more unique and only hacks would have experimented with what it would be like to capture "god".

So I'm not sure unnecessary or pointless is the best word for Arceus, but it certainly wasn't done right.
