Recently, every pokemon fan who was self aware during 2003(pokemon ruby/sapphire) and 2005(pokemon emerald) has had a nostalgic rush because of omega ruby and alpha sapphire. Luckily, I am included in that group thanks to pokemon emerald.

This rush of hype and excitement has got me thinking: what about the other great games from the past?

It is only natural to for things to died at some point, we all will, but depression aside, what about franchises(try saying that three time) like zoids? What about medabots coming to the west? If you look them up, you'll find one of three: nothing, asian releases or MAYBE ,just maybe, a localization petition.

Even Megaman, a greatly loved character, has suffered this fate. Sure, being a ssb4 character is great, but a better fate woud be STILL being a franchise. In fact megaman has been reduced so much, it creator, Keiji Inafune, started Mighty No.9, a spiritual successor for the blue bomber. While this is great, (I believe) it leaves Megaman himself in the past, not prospering as he once did.

SO back to my point: great things are dying(in the west), but it is not because they get wrinkly and die, but because we forget what they once were.

However there is another side to this story.
How many of you older gamers play CoD? You've probably encounter what in my country we call a "rat boy". Basically, it is an idiotic kid who believe he is better than you. in voice chats, they usually throw !!!! at you.
They're also one of the reasons western games on America are dying. Their choice of games are mainly eastern titles. Not only that, but they usually regard western titles such as pokemon and megaman as something stupid and childish(can this be pronounced without "dish" at the end?).

Now this is not necessarily true, since I believe myself a decent kid, but I've met a lot of "rat boys" over these 14 years. Weird enough (as a kid who couldn't stand up for himself) they have bullied me(is that related somehow?). The past is the past though... which sound ironic, given the topic.

What does this leave us with? Games that will never learn how to speak english and, mostly, a generation of idiots.

Adding a twist to this sad story is: NOT pokemon but digimon, a franchise that has found it's ways into the west with Digimon All-Star Rumble!!! This game is just to test the waters but, if successful, could mean the reappearance of long loved franchise.

To close off, I'll leave the fates of good franchises below:

Zoids: It's too late.
Medabots: Nothing in the non-wild west(support project rising beetle if you want it to survive here)
Digimon: Testing grounds
Megaman:...SSb4 character(great); Monster Hunter stupidity(...); Beck
Duel Masters: Kaijudo
The list goes on, but because of not being able to remember when it matters( I KNOW IT HAS HAPPENED TO YOU!!!) it will stay this short.

These are my thoughts, what are yours?

I think some franchises do not age well and that is why they are disappearing. Pokémon is a well made JRPG and therefore making new entrys and remaking old ones is pretty successfull.
Other franchises like Dragon Quest have to evolve in order to keep being alive, a game like Dragon Quest IX is nothing like Dragon Warrior 1, you only can detect core elements which are similar.

Other franchises and genres really don't attract mainstream audiences. That's why they are getting forgotten. Capcoms successful franchises are Resident Evil, Street Fighter and Monster Hunder, Mega Man just is for enthusiasts but not for the mainstream market.
Especially 2D sidescroller have a hard time nowadays. There are the succesfull ones which mostly are the Nintendo franchises and far behind them are franchises like Rayman, there just is no more room for more entrys in the market. Therefore the indie/download-market is a big place for 2D games. I think this just is not enough for Capcom and all what I've said about Capcom and Mega Man can be said for other franchises and other video game companys.

Besides I really am scepting about Mighty No. 9 (and I really like the oldschool Mega Man games and the Mega Man X franchise is one of my favorites). The gameplay looks okay (but you can have several of these games on Steam, PSN... What really bugs me is the look of the game. This 3D polygon look was never successfull with a sidescrolling Mega Man. oth PSP titles and all the Mega Man X titles on PS2/Xbox/NGC are the least successfull ones. I bet that Mega Man Powered Up sold less then the VC release of Mega Man, despite it's an improved version of Mega Man. In my opinoion they should have made the game with more like the Mega Man X gameplay and more like cartoony/Cel-Shading graphics (which means like the SNES games, just without pixels).
