How do you feel about revealing your real name over the Internet? Is it something you prefer to keep to yourself? If so, have people ever incorrectly assumed your name was a certain name based on something else? And what do you do about prompts that may ask you for it?

I myself don't have any real concerns presenting my real name, and my trainer name in X is my real name which I have disclosed so it's not a big deal to me at all.

Anyway, discuss.

I don't care at all about people knowing my full name. in fact, PC is the first community I've been a part of that the majority of people didn't have their skype names set to their first and last name, and a lot of the people seem more wary to share personal details.

My username is always my real name lmfao.

Some people have trouble pronouncing it the first time they meet me so I like to turn it into a game show.

edit: Alfieri Villeda is my full name. I don't find it difficult at all to reveal. I have nothing to hide. My facebook and instagram have my full name for god's sake lmao.

As long as my last name doesn't get out there, I'm fine. Everyone knows my name is Matt anyways; it's really no big deal considering it doesn't even reveal that much about you.

I don't mind revealing my real name to the internet, but mainly I'll keep it to the first name since "Nichole" isn't that common, or at least with this spelling.

And no I don't think people have used something to assume my name before. Although I think some people here at PC think it was "Hika" but they'll eventually notice it's just a nickname.

PC is the only place I've revealed my name at all. Everywhere else, I've never bothered to share my first name or anything. It's probably because this is like my internet home or something.

But you will never get my last name, for various reasons.

First name is fine, but I keep it at that. My last name is so rare that I'm identifiable with it, so, well... yeah.

(well, I say that, but there's a guy on Flickr with the same full name as me and he has photos of Rochester, and that's kinda weird)

My first name is really generic, and my last name too. Combined they're part of common sentences, so even if you know my full name, personal information is really hard to find about me without knowing my home town. With that said, I'm still not revealing my last name to people who I only know digitally.

I don't really care who knows my first name (Erica). There was a while where pretty much everyone at PC knew it and it was weird when anyone called me by my username rather than my first name. I'm pretty open about my name anywhere I go online, so I think most people know it, but a lot of groups of friends I've been in lately just go by usernames or nicknames. I usually have "Erica" set as my display name in most places, so I guess that's how people generally find out.

My usernames have never been "real names" or anything, so I don't think anyone's ever mistakenly assumed my name was something else because they had no reason to. Although if anyone ever thought my name was actually "Cherrim" I would be more than happy to keep that illusion going, haha.

I was very hesitant on revealing my first name, but once I did, I realized that it's not that big of a deal. I mean, Nicholas is a really common name, so it doesn't really matter.

Despite me revealing my first name, and changing my screen name, most people around here still call me Slayr. I don't mind, in fact, I kind of like it, but any name will do.

This is the first site where I've publicly revealed my name. John is so common, its not like it tells you exactly who I am. As for my last name, it's too epic to reveal. Also, no one online has asked me for my first name to my knowledge.

I could care less that people know my real name considering it's my real name that I just go ahead and use over the internet. Mainly because a friend of mine introduced me as well... Tara when I started having a 'name' on the internet and not just a username and well it stuck there was honestly no reason to go back on it and have a fake name. vOv

Mostly everybody here knows what my first name is. ('cept for maybe some newcomers?) I'm in fact comfortable that people know my first name, and in fact wished that first-name basis was more of a thing online at forums and chatrooms.

Umg Scott this looks just like the title for one of my threads on another forum.

Anyways I have no problem with sharing my name lol. My first forum username was my first and middle name anyways. I also used my first name as my forum name on other places as well. It just never really bothered me. xD

I rarely give out my real name. I normally limit it to only giving out my nickname (in case you guys want to know: Candy), especially since my name isn't a common one. ._.

But eh, as long as nobody knows my last name, no one can really find me. :v

btw my current username is what my real name is derived from

I don't really care so much. In the past, it was a bigger deal because people revealing their real names was less common. Now, because of the advent of Facebook and other such places forcing you to use your real name, it isn't really something to be concerned about.

All of the people/organizations who want to find out about me already can anyway. (Like Google, they have information on almost everyone that is spooky.) And most people on the internet are generally like most people in real life - generally sane individuals who keep to themselves and don't want to murder you with an axe or be a rapist or whatever.

I am more cautious about my last name though. I don't like to reveal that in public, but am fine with saying it in instant messaging after I've spoken to someone a few times. It's just a bit of that remnant of paranoia from the past staying with me.

What is my real name? Well, at the moment, it is Angela. But please, do NOT call me that. I am going to be changing it in about a year or so because I just hate hearing that name in reference to myself. Don't hate the name itself. I just dislike the person it makes me think of when it is said to me. It's a name I have grown to associate with a weak, shy version of myself who could do nothing in real life, and I would like to shed it.

I'll probably be changing it to Adele, so refer to me as that if you want to do real names.

Funnily enough, people have thought that Arylett is my real name. Which is entirely intentional. I wanted to create an internet name that didn't sound like your stereotypical internet name. Something that sounded like it could actually be someone's name. And because of the way the name is, I have learned to identify more with that name than Angela. So calling me Arylett is a great compliment, as you are addressing who I feel I actually am. I've probably been called Arylett more so than my actual name, because since the age of 14 when I first started using that name, I have socialized far more on the internet. Adele is something recent, but I'm also starting to get attached to it in the same way.

Yes, I am weird about names. But I find them to be very important. In meaning, in how they are spelled, and how they sound. To me, they should reflect a person accurately.

woah there better b carefu bro. ppl mite... kno ur name.

Seriously, people should chill when it comes to names. It's not like the world's gonna end if y'all reveal your first name (at least), for example.

I don't like my first name, so I won't tell people right away. **** that, tho. Here's my full name: Bogdana Mihaylova. Have fun with that info. :)

As a precaution, I won't just give out my full name to people, even though I don't exactly have very uncommon names and I probably wouldn't have much to fear. However, in the case I ever get a creepy stalker or anything, I'd rather have that flimsy layer of protection to help me. Full name is reserved for people I feel I can definitely trust.

My first name, however - I don't exactly freely give it out (just because I'm not that open about personal details), but I don't mind people knowing it. Mine's a common enough name that I'm not worried at all about it being out there.
