So with school going on, I imagine that everyone has had to write at least a couple essays. Being interested in writing, everyone always assumed that I liked writing these essays simply because it was in my comfort zone. However, I hated each and every essay with a burning passion, so I'm wondering if this is something that's common among writers, or if I'm somewhat alone in this regard.

For me, there's nothing wrong with writing an essay, as I've written a few on my own and rather enjoyed it. However, when you're forced to write about a topic you don't really have any interest in, that's where the trouble starts.

If I have a say in what the essay is about or if it's interesting then I don't mind writing an essay. But if it's an essay over something I could care less about then it frustrates me even tho I like writing. I'm not what you would call a writer, I'm more into poetry. I'm a musician that writes, and as a musician I look at my lyrics as poetry and/or story telling. When writing lyrics I sometimes get extremely technical with it as if I was writing an essay.

Writing an essay in itself isn't a difficult task for me. Like Nolafus, I've written essays in my spare time on topics that I've researched, and I enjoyed the time I spent doing so. Whenever an essay was assigned in school, however, I dreaded everything because I was never interested in what the essay was about. The only essays I had any interest in writing for school were ones for classes where the teachers were more lax in the styles I could write in.

Teachers and classmates both figured that I would be automatically good at writing essays, since I was always writing stories and reading. That was far from the truth, though. I generally wrote essays quickly to get them over with as soon as possible.

No, I disliked them too. It's not even about not knowing enough about the subject. Since researching and writing are both easy for me. But for me, my best writing comes out of having a good feel and respect for the topic. Give me an article to write about the evolution of the relevance of video games from their first big boom, to modern day and you'll get a pretty good one. But give me a subject like turnip farming, and you'll probably have one as dry as the paper it's printed on.
I'm a bit of a perfectionist with some things, too. Like writing. Which means if I don't like what I wrote, I'll get rid of it if at all possible. Which is not always possible with deadline related essays.

So, yeah, they usually left a bad taste in my mouth.

I don't like researching for essays because I have a high bar for evidence. Most news articles don't cut it, and I try to go for studies or an analytical article if possible. I procrastinate on them so much that I gain a dislike for them, even though I probably would have enjoyed writing them under less stress and a smaller time constraint.

I dislike essays. n_n Especially when the topic's just thrown at me, it's just awful. If I can choose my own topic, it's a little more tolerable because I'll probably actually enjoy researching it, but then writing it is just awful. I'm good at writing, so that's not a problem; it's just that I feel like I might write too much or not give enough information on a specific topic, and then it just leaves too many questions unanswered and ahhhhh.
