Foreword:
I'm a total noob to any kind of competitive battling in Pokemon. The most I've done is battled friends and some people online. While I hope the title isn't misleading, I don't necessarily think I'm good enough to play VGC's or in Smogon but I'd like to not get my butt kicked in PSS. So I decided to revamp my team and start from scratch, as for IV's I have a 6iv ditto to breed, but any help with what EV's to give my pokes would be useful. Here's what I've got.

EDIT: Thanks a ton for the help, I'll continue to update this team as I get more suggestions.

ORIGINAL TEAM:
Mega Lucario
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: Max ATTK and Max SPD (I dunno where the other 4 went oops)
- Swords Dance
- Bullet Punch
- Earthquake
- Powerup Punch

I'm using Lucario as my main sweeper. I just think hes a cool poke and has good viability with Swords dance into Powerup Punch OHKO'ing just about anything that isn't resistant. I'm considering
switching something for Close Combat or switching him entirely into a SpAtk Nasty plot but for now this is what I got

Talon Flame @ Life Orb
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 252 ATK / 252 HP / 4 SpD
- Brave Bird
- Tailwind
- U-Turn
- Flair Blitz

I picked Talon Flame because he was kind of a total opposite for Lucario, offering a resistance or immunity to everything Lucario was weak to helping to clear some pokes. It seemed like a natural fit and with U-Turn I can swap straight back into Lucario or some other poke. Not too sold on his move set yet but yeah.

Gyarados @ Left overs
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 SpD / 4 Def
- Hydro Pump
- Fire Blast
- Ice Beam
- Thunder Bolt

I knew I wanted Gyarados in here. Great coverage and could take out fire threats to Lucario.
The only problem is I have no idea how to build the guy. What I have there is my best assemblance I could figure out for him based off of stuff I found online so sorry if hes poop.

Gardevoir @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Telepathy
EVs: 4 HP/ 252 SpAtk / 252 SpD
- MoonBlast
- Psychic
- ThunderBolt
- Trick

Same thing with Gyarados, really no clue how to build this guy. This was my best shot at it.
I wanted Gardevoir to clear Fighting hazards and Dark Hazards seeing as how Lucario can't punch a Dark, but also to be a back up sweeper in case things got rough with Lucario. Fairy to clear Dragon/Fighting and Psychic to hopefully sweep should things get set up nice.

Ampharos @ Left Overs
Ability: Static
EVs: 252 HP/ 252 SpAtk / 4 Sdef
- Thunderbolt
- Thunderwave
- Hidden Power
- Focus Blast

I suppose I should just clear that I have no idea how to build these pokemon. Sorry if I have offended you. I know I wanted Ampharos to clear my weakness to water I have with Talon Flame, whom is vital to setting up for Lucario. Hes also a viable switch into an Electric poke if I really need to tank the hit.

Umbreon @ Left Overs
Ability: Inner Focus
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpD / 4 Def
- Curse
- Payback
- Moonlight
- Toxic

Like I said, I have no clue what I'm doing. All I knew was that I wanted Umbreon to be a tank.
I was also debating giving him Swords dance and Baton Pass in order to get a free setup for Lucario but I wasn't too sure.
UPDATED TEAM:

Mega Lucario w/Lucarionite
Nature: Jolly
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 252 Attack, 252 Speed, HP
Moves: Close Combat, Swords Dance, Earthquake, Bullet Punch

Went for the Earthquake out of preference.

TalonFlame @ Sharp Beak
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 252 Atk/4 Def/252 Spe
Ability: Gale Wings
-Flare Blitz
-Brave Bird
-U-turn
-Roost

I definitely agree with the Roost on TalonFlame. Keeping him going is definitely good. Went with this one for the improved speed so I can hopefully take out Hazards before they take out me which should be easy with TalonFlames impressive speed.

Gyarados @ Leftovers
Nature: Adamant/Jolly
EVs: 88 HP/220 Atk/4 Def/196 Spe
Ability: Intimidate
-Dragon Dance
-Waterfall
-Bounce
-Substitute

Not too sure on how I feel about that Bounce but I'll teach it to him and see how I like it.

Sylveon @ Choice Specs
Nature: Modest
EVs: 244 HP/252 SAtk/12 Spe
Ability: Pixilate
-Hyper Voice
-Shadow Ball
-Psyshock
-Hidden Power (Ground/Fire)

I agree with the whole Gardevoir being mediocre un mega'd and opted for Sylveon so that I could keep the whole Psychic/Fairy Moveset. Also I think Sylveon is neat.

Landorus-Therian @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 240 Def / 8 SpD / 8 Spe
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- U-turn
- Knock Off

Hazards hurray. Works well because Hydregion can resist water.

Hydregion @ Life Orb
Nature: Mild
EVs: 4 Atk/252 SAtk/252 Spe
-Draco Meteor
-Dark Pulse
-Fire Blast/Flash Cannon
-Earth Power

Resist Water and Dark coverage.

So that's my team so far, thanks for the help PlatinumDude and Zekrom, you've helped me consider alternatives and make some switches

Also please remember that while I want this team to be competitive, I'm not necessarily going to any tournys. I just want something I can use on the PSS and not get owned.

Thanks Again for reading!

Mega Lucario is an Uber Pokemon because of its unpredictability. You could be expecting a physical Mega Lucario, but end up getting slammed by the equally effective special variants instead. Mega Fighting and Steel substitutes are Lopunny, Metagross, Gallade and Heracross:

-Knock Off
-Pursuit/Swords Dance
Nature: Adamant/Jolly
EVs: 4 HP/252 Atk/252 Spe

Without Roost, Talonflame gets worn down fast between its recoil-inducing STABs and Life Orb makes that even faster:
-Swords Dance
-Flare Blitz
-Brave Bird
-Roost
Nature: Jolly
EVs: 88 HP/252 Atk/168 Spe
Item: Leftovers/Sharp Beak/Sky Plate

or
-Flare Blitz
-Brave Bird
-U-turn
-Steel Wing/Roost/Tailwind
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 252 Atk/4 Def/252 Spe

-Flare Blitz
-Brave Bird
-Natural Gift
Nature: Jolly
EVs: 80 HP/252 Atk/176 Spe
Item: Liechi Berry/Salac Berry
Ability: Gale Wings

Gyarados is primarily a physical Pokemon. Giving it special moves is an incredible waste of its potential:
-Dragon Dance
-Waterfall/Earthquake
-Crunch (learns this in OR/AS)
-Taunt/Substitute/Earthquake
Nature: Adamant/Jolly
EVs: 252 Atk/4 Def/252 Spe
Item: Gyaradosite
Ability: Intimidate

or
-Dragon Dance
-Waterfall
-Bounce
-Substitute/Taunt
Nature: Adamant/Jolly
EVs: 88 HP/220 Atk/4 Def/196 Spe
Item: Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate

Gardevoir is only good in its Mega form; its regular form is rather mediocre:
-Psyshock
-Hyper Voice
-Focus Blast
-Taunt/Will-o-Wisp/Substitute/Calm Mind
Nature: Timid/Modest
EVs: 24 Def/232 SAtk/252 Spe
Item: Gardevoirite
Ability: Trace

Better offensive Psychic and Fairy Pokemon to turn to if you don't opt for Mega Gardevoir are Sylveon, Azumarill, Gothitelle, Latios and Starmie:

Gothitelle:
-Psychic/Psyshock
-Thunderbolt
-Hidden Power (Fire)/Energy Ball
-Trick
Nature: Modest
EVs: 172 HP/252 SAtk/84 Spe
Item: Choice Specs
Ability: Shadow Tag

Starmie:
-Scald
-Rapid Spin

-Defog/Tailwind/Hidden Power (Fire)
-Trick

EVs: 252 SAtk/4 SDef/252 Spe
Item: Choice Scarf

Sylveon:
-Hyper Voice
-Shadow Ball
-Psyshock
-Baton Pass/Hidden Power (Ground/Fire)
Nature: Modest
EVs: 244 HP/252 SAtk/12 Spe
Item: Choice Specs
Ability: Pixilate

Azumarill:
-Waterfall
-Aqua Jet
-Play Rough
-Superpower/Knock Off
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 228 HP/252 Atk/28 Spe (Choice Band) or 16 HP/252 Atk/240 SDef (Assault Vest)
Item: Choice Band/Assault Vest
Ability: Huge Power

or
-Belly Drum
-Aqua Jet
-Play Rough
-Waterfall/Superpower
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 92 HP/252 Atk/164 Spe
Item: Sitrus Berry
Ability: Huge Power

As with Gardevoir, Ampharos is only good in its Mega form, as its regular form is less bulkier and lacks its Mega form's extra resistances:
-Agility
-Thunderbolt
-Dragon Pulse
-Focus Blast
Nature: Modest
EVs: 4 HP/252 SAtk/252 Spe
Item: Ampharosite
Ability: Static

or
-Rest
-Sleep Talk
-Volt Switch
-Dragon Pulse
Nature: Calm
EVs: 248 HP/28 SAtk/228 SDef
Item: Ampharosite
Ability: Static

If you don't use Mega Ampharos, Wash Rotom and the aforementioned Magnezone are better options:
-Volt Switch
-Hydro Pump
-Will-o-Wisp
-Pain Split/Rest
Nature: Bold/Calm
EVs: 252 HP/212 Def/44 Spe (Bold) or 252 HP/212 SDef/44 Spe (Calm)
Item: Leftovers/Chesto Berry

or
-Volt Switch
-Hydro Pump
-Thunder/Will-o-Wisp
-Trick
Nature: Timid/Modest
EVs: 4 Def/252 SAtk/252 Spe
Item: Choice Scarf

Umbreon is mediocre because Sylveon does its defensive duties better. It's also pretty much mauled by the common Fighting and Fairy attacks. A defensive Dark Pokemon to turn to is Mandibuzz:
-Foul Play
-Roost
-Taunt/Whirlwind
-Defog/Toxic/Knock Off
Nature: Bold/Impish
EVs: 248 HP/136 Def/108 SDef/16 Spe
Item: Leftovers
Ability: Overcoat

Platinum he's playing on 3DS so he can use Mega Lucario. Which, a physical Mega Lucario set should look like:

Mega Lucario w/Lucarionite
Nature: Jolly
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 252 Attack, 252 Speed, HP
Moves: Close Combat, Swords Dance, Earthquake/Crunch, Bullet Punch

It needs the power of Close Combat to shred the enemy and Power-Up Punch is not needed when you have Swords Dance.

If you wanna do a special Mega Lucario:

Mega Lucario w/Lucarionite
Nature: Timid/Hasty
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 252 Sp.Attack, 252 Speed, 4 Attack or HP
Moves: Aura Sphere, Flash Cannon, Dark Pulse, Nasty Plot/Extreme Speed/Vacuum Wave

I also think that a Ground type would be better than Ampharos on the team since Electric immunity > Electric resist, and you team really needs something to deal with Electric types. Ampharos is a little underwhelming when not in Mega form, like Platinum said.

Mamoswine, Excadrill, and Landorus-T (if you can get a good one) are all good options for that spot:

Mamoswine w/Life Orb
Nature: Naive/Hasty
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 244 Attack, 16 Sp.Attack, 252 Speed
Moves: Earthquake, Icicle Crash, Ice Shard, Freeze-Dry

or

Mamoswine w/Focus Sash
Nature: Jolly
Ability: Oblivous
EVs: 252 Attack, 252 Speed, 4 HP
Moves: Stealth Rock, Earthquake, Icicle Crash, Ice Shard

Excadrill w/Air Balloon
Nature: Adamant/Jolly
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 Attack, 252 Speed, 4 Sp.Defense
Moves: Earthquake, Rapid Spin, Iron Head, Rock Tomb/Swords Dance

Landorus-Therian @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 240 Def / 8 SpD / 8 Spe
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- U-turn
- Knock Off

or

Landorus-Therian @ Earth Plate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- U-Turn/Toxic

It does give you a bit of a Water weakness, but these 3 also give you Rapid Spin support, hazard support, and/or Ice types moves/priority, which are all useful.

I suppose that Vaporeon could replace Umbreon, fufilling both the cleric role while being immune to Water....

btw 6v6 or 3v3?

I do know that he's playing cartridge, but I'm saying all this just in case Smogon rules apply.

Why would you use Rock Tomb on Excadrill when it has access to Rock Slide? Sure, it can slow down opponents, but Breloom does Rock Tomb abuse better.

Usually Smogon rules don't apply much when playing on cartridge, especially on Battle Spot. If he's actually playing with people who follow Smogon's rules and they can tell him that, then it's a different story and he should use one of the alternatives you suggested.

The few things you're hitting with Rock Slide are still hit hard enough by Rock Tomb, and the Speed drop is really nice for hitting all the pokes switching in that really do not want their Speed to be lowered, and might even help out Excadrill since base 88 Speed is a little slow these days.

I personally feel that Rock Slide's higher BP outweighs Rock Tomb's Speed drop.

Also, why would you use Extreme Speed on special Lucario? While it has +2 priority, it's not going to hit as hard as Lucario's special moves. Nasty Plot Lucario should use special moves only, IMO:
-Nasty Plot
-Aura Sphere
-Flash Cannon
-Vacuum Wave/Shadow Ball/Dark Pulse
Nature: Timid
EVs: 4 Def/252 SAtk/252 Spe
Item: Lucarionite

Thanks a ton for all of your help! I'll read through your suggestions and make updates and as Zekrom said, I'm not playing Smogon. At least not yet lol.

The problem I have with replacing Umbreon for Vaporeon, is it open up a triple weakness to Electric. And while thats fine and dandy if I opt out Ampharos for Mamoswine Or Landorus, in the off chance they gets KOed, half of my team is screwed. It's also the same problem with replacing Umbreon with Mandibuzz. Triple weakness to Electric. I originally meant Umbreon to be the glue of the team and just cover up my weakness to dark and ghost and not intrude and make up any other weaknesses.
But if its ok to have a big hole for Electric, I can make the switch.

Also while I agree Ampharos should probably be switched due to an underwhelming non-mega form, Mamoswine would open a triple weakness to fighting. While Landorus-T could be a potential switch, I would kind of like to keep it Electric to protect from water a threat to my Talonflame. Would an Electivire work? I'm rather fond of that pokemon and have no idea if he's a viable poke.
I think I'll probably switch Ampharos to Wash Rotom seeing as how he can clear up the weakness to fire and Water that Talonflame and Lucario have.

Finally I will most likely be replacing Gardevoir for Sylveon seeing as how you said, Gardevoir un mega'd is a bit underwhelming like Ampharos.

I'm also new to competitive battling, and have been reading this thread for ideas, but one thing I can't help but ask about is how do you obtain such a wide variety of pokemon to fill out and adjust a team like this?

Sorry for invading your thread with whats probably such a nooby question!

Its totally cool!

And I'm not sure what you mean, are you referring to how I find these Pokemon in game or how Platinum and Zekrom managed to find all these Pokemon that could work well with my team?

I meant how you find them in game :)
Well as for finding em in game, its not too hard. I have Every generation except Gen 5 so worst case scenario its a matter of going to an old game and hunting em down.

If you're playing on the new gen 6 games, I find that switching your Shout-Out to "Trade Me -Insert Pokemon Here-" gets easy trades

But I actually already have all the Pokemon on my new list except for Wash-Rotom who's easy to get.
I just kind of have a lot of Pokemon sitting around.

I was unaware you could still get pokemon from the old games since wifi was cancelled for the DS?

You don't need to trade, you only need Migration, which is a function built in to the games.
You only need a DS with a gameboy slot, and a 3DS.

I unfortunately cannot post a link because I haven't made enough posts apparently, but if you look on the "Jwittz" channel on youtube you can find a handy guide explaining how to migrate effectively from gen 3 up to ORAS and XY
You can only migrate from Gen 3 up however due to changes in EV's and IV's that came in gen 3.

That should hopefully explain how to get some of the older pokemon. Most of these pokes are new though and I think they're all obtainable within the newer Gens.

Thankyou for your help, i'll be sure to check this out as I have a lot of old titles sat around!

Wash Rotom does make a handy Talonflame counter, yes, so I do get why you want the Electric Pokemon on the team. Electivire is a big no simply because while its coverage is good, it tends to fall short of KOing its targets. Given its frailty, it can get KOed in return.

The reason why I suggested Mandibuzz is because it provides Defog support to remove Stealth Rock, something Talonflame is very vulnerable to. I also suggested Starmie as a Rapid Spinner to take care of said hazard.

If you can implement Zekrom's changes in some way, you can squeeze in Hydreigon, a Dark Pokemon that happens to resist Electric:
-Draco Meteor
-Dark Pulse
-Fire Blast/Flash Cannon
-Superpower/Earth Power
Nature: Mild/Rash/Modest
EVs: 4 Atk/252 SAtk/252 Spe
Item: Life Orb

or
-Draco Meteor
-Dark Pulse
-Earth Power
-U-turn
Nature: Modest/Timid
EVs: 4 HP/252 SAtk/252 Spe
Item: Choice Scarf

I can definitely understand why you suggested Mandibuzz but Im just not 100% keen on opening a triple weakness to Electric, but the dehazarding is great. The thing is, Im looking again at my type effectiveness with Wash-Rotom, and it opens up a double weakness to Electric, which would be fine If I had any resistances to it.

I think Hydregion would be a good addition for that resistance perhaps in replacement of Umbreon so I can fullfill the resistance to Electric and cover my weakness to Dark/Ghost still, however what did you mean by Zekroms changes?

Re-read his post and you'll get why.

Also as an FYI, Wash Rotom is neutral to Electric; its only weakness is Grass.

Yeah I'm aware hes neutral but I meant as apposed to Landorus-T who would provide a resistance.

And as for his changes are you referring to replacing Umbreon for Vaporeon?

Not just that (and I wouldn't really recommend Vaporeon, tbh), but his suggestions for what Ground Pokemon to use.

Oh now I know what you mean lol. Im not too sure on Mamoswine. I personally don't like Excadrill (sorry if im being too picky) and for the reasons states below, I will explain why I'd rather not have Landorus.

The thing is, if I have a Pure electric and Pure dark in the 5th and 6th spots my type effectiveness is pretty wicked. With few weaknesses and resistances where I do.

Theres a type effectiveness chart for my team.

So while I would love to get a good Rapid-Spinner/Defogger on my team I would prefer them to be Pure Electric and Pure Dark if possible feel me?
As you can see with a Pure Electric like Ampharos and Umbreon I get really good coverage.
So if I'm going to switch them I'd like their type to remain the same.

As I already mentioned, regular Ampharos is mediocre and Mega Ampharos is superior in every way. The only other pure Dark Pokemon viable in standard play is Mega Absol.

Yeah I know I just had him in there to show what I meant about the whole Pure Electric and Pure Dark thing. Im not gonna put Ampharos in.

If you really think that theres no way, Ill probably consider going with Landorus and Hydregion.

So as a full roster,
Mega Lucario
Talonflame
Gyarados
Sylveon
Landorus-T
Hydregion

I've got builds for all of these except Hydregion. Anyone mind helping me build him?

Read one of my previous posts in this thread for Hydreigon sets.

Edit: FYI, if you're playing by Smogon rules, Mega Lucario is an Uber, so you'll have to make do with Mega Lopunny or regular Lucario (if you do use regular Lucario, refer to the previous Megas I suggested).

Sounds good, and thanks a ton!
Do you think this current Pokemon team is ready to breed and build?
