While Pokémon games can generally get boring because they follow the same generic formula in every main series game, what with the whole defeat all the Gym Leaders, stop the villainous team and become the Champion, they’re usually not something people can legitimately call bad. They’ve been following the same formula for years, and that’s not likely to change anytime soon (although Black and White deviated from that a bit in that becoming the Champion isn’t the big end goal of the main story, there it’s defeating N and Ghetsis).

You may not like a main series game, but it’s not likely that most people will really be able to bring up much hatred for them, if any at all, or find them deserving of vitriol and inspiring of real anger. But what if they are? Is there a main series game that, instead of being completely bland, was one that you found aggressively bad and provoking far greater anger than others for whatever reason?

This is not simply another “least favorite main series game” thread. For one, if you’re saying this about a main series game, it’s safe to assume that it’s your least favorite (unless, god help you, there’s more than one you feel this way about). Secondly, this can’t just be a Pokémon game you generally found boring - it has to be one that to you, goes the extra mile, and is one you found aggressively bad.

So, my questions for you guys are:
Did any main series Pokémon game actively annoy or irritate you? If so, which?
And what pushed it into your line of fire as compared to simply being boring?

Or you may not have to say this about any main series game, which would be great. For me, I don’t have any, I like every main series game and don’t have too much to object to on an aggressive note (but for what it's worth, the closest I can say to that is the hype between GSC and RSE are part of what makes them my two least favorites, but that doesn't actively piss me off). Anyway, discuss.

The entire Third Generation pretty much gets this from me due to all of the missed potential, but FRLG really take the cake.

While RSE are technically worse games (IMO), FRLG committed the greater sin of being a crappy rendition of a good generation. They removed more features than added new ones (ie. clock, berries, breeding, cross-Gen pre/evolutions, contests, and so much more), and most of what little they did add either had no effect (Fame Checker) or actually made the game worse (Teachy TV and intrusive help system).

The dumbed down difficulty level was insulting, as well. While I would've preferred the stronger Gym Leader teams from Yellow, could we have, at least, gotten the Red/Blue levels? There was NO need to nerf Giovanni and the Indigo Plateau. (Especially, devolving the former's ace to a Rhyhorn. Yeah, let's make Giovanni even more stupidly easy than he was in the originals!)

And, speaking of Yellow, the game was just as much a part of Gen 1 as Red/Blue, so I REALLY would've liked to have seen its existence, you know, acknowledged. Along with the Gym Leader teams, why couldn't have Jessie and James returned? They would've been the PERFECT way to introduce the then-new double battles into Gen 1, and there was a lot that could've been done with their characters. And, following Pokémon should've returned in THESE games instead of the Gen 2 remakes, of all things. I've read that one Yellow feature, the Pikachu's Beach minigame, WAS going to return in FRLG, but was scrapped at the last minute. Why?

And, "scrapped at the last minute" is the running theme in FRLG, because the games were clearly slapped together in a rush, and it shows. The list of unused maps and sprites from these games is staggering, especially all of those scrapped Sevii Islands. Those islands were the literal embodiment of missed potential, and the long list of unused maps only further proves it.

I've said it a million times, but I REALLY wish that they had waited to make FRLG, waited until the DS and then gave Gen 1 a proper remake made with care and planning. The Generation that started it all deserved SO much better.

I have none, but Gen V and VI had somethings that annoyed me. For Unova it was that the Pokemon designs could've been less...well strange looking. Also Unova wasn't ever given a proper post game imo. For Kalos and the Hoenn remakes they were too easy...Kalos is worse though as it's plot felt choppy while Unova and Hoenn both had good stories (even then I like better Kalos than Unova as a region...)
I'm currently working on some novels. If you're interested you can read them here:

No. There are minor annoyance like lack of some features but no. I love Pokemon to the point that even if Game freak intentionally wanted to screw up the game, I'd still probably enjoy it lol.

And no, this doesnt mean I'd blindly take anything Game Freak throws at me, it means that this franchise is so amazing and has such good quality, it just grew on me too much to hate a game. There would be too much references and nostalgia within the game for me to be able to hate it.

knock knock knock, we dont want to jinx this though, do we lol.

Although there are some parts of main-series games that I do find to be quite repetitive--defeat-evil-team formula, for example, in which we stop a criminal organization throughout story-line from doing their bad deeds, with another being defeating-eight-Gym-Leaders-and-taking-on-Pokémon-League--they still try to keep things slightly different, and I do appreciate that!

As far as games themselves go, I'm fond of all of them, more or less. X and Y, which were one of our recently-released ones, did contain short plot and whatnot, but did not precisely get to me; they've made up for this in terms of features, as they had introduced a lot of new aspects to us with these two games, such as mega-evolution system, character customization, Pokémon-Amie, and so forth.

In future, one thing I would like GameFreak to try their hands on is to perhaps allow us to take accept challenges as Champion. If we do become it, I believe it would certainly make sense to be defending our title against others.

I've previously mentioned having been underwhelmed by X&Y on multiple occasions, but at the end of the day, they don't irritate me that much. The games that do actively irritate me are Diamond & Pearl, for two reasons:
  • While I've previously praised D&P's use of the bottom screen with the Pokétch, it is horribly used in menus & PC, and by that I mean barely used at all.
  • The games are SLOW! Battles feel like they last forever, you can't bike in gates, surfing is slow and boring (and the music that plays while surfing sounds too much like a lullaby) , and don't get me started on the save times! Platinum might have fixed most of the problems, but I swear, it feels like the save times are even longer in this game.

Friend codes:
Pokémon GO: 2092-0866-5439 | Electric-type Safari: 4468-2370-5617 (Electrode - Pikachu - Galvantula) | Dark-type Safari: 1134-8222-3179 (Nuzleaf - Cacturne - Liepard)
PM before adding. If you don't mention which code you added, I will NOT add you back.

I'm agreeing with Sani on Diamond & Pearl. While Sinnoh was interesting, the slow speed and the terrible wasted potential on handling bottom-screen stuff really kinda ruined the game for me, and don't even get me started on the horrendously long saving times in 4th Gen as a whole.

At least Platinum made the Sinnoh experience a bit more tolerable, but as was pointed out, the level and difficulty curve gets weird all throughout the story. The first rival battle in Platinum is also really hard for those who chose Piplup, not because he's tough but because his Turtwig spams Withdraw and ends up at +6 Defense for most of the battle, and trust me, Piplup's Pound is so weak it basically means you always have to hope for the crit or that battle gets so long. At least picking Chimchar or Turtwig won't give you such a long first battle.
Gone forever for personal reasons.

The only think the really annoys me is the pointless puzzles you have to do in order to procead in the story for example the farfetch'd chase in Gold/Silver and the foufou chase in X/Y, they are boring and pointless!!!

Well I used to not care for Dppt. I didn't find the gym leaders very appealing, none of the Pokemon stood out to me, and the region itself was just boring for some reason. It took me a while to really appreciate it for what is it. So I will say this game annoyed me for quite a while, but I eventually came to enjoy it. I still find it to be the games with the most bland addition of new Pokemon. I didn't really hate any or love any they're all just meh to me.

When it comes to generation V I just can't get myself to like it. For some reason almost everything from this gen annoys me. It has a really cheesy feel to me that's a bit hard to explain. I didn't enjoy most of the music, the characters, or the pokemon. Unlike Dppt there are a lot of Pokemon I dislike from this generation, but there are a few I really like so it made it somewhat tolerable. I will say there were a lot of things in b/w that I hated that were addressed in b2/w2.

I feel that B/W focused too much on the story against team plasma when it was all just a façade for a generic evil plot. Also, making only new Gen V Pokémon available made the game feel like a cheap imitation of Pokémon with a good selection of the new ones being re-treads of older Pokémon with uglier designs. The game was way too linear and felt like you were stuck on a set path, plus the region was forgettable and it's set-pieces were dull.

Heartgold / Soulsilver had the best bottom screen layout design of every Gen IV game

Being able to TOGGLE running?
Not having to go through an extra menu to select field moves like Fly and Flash?
Two Key Items boxes?

Plus it greatly expanded on character roles, like the Rocket Executives

Irritants
Spoiler:
Kalos irritated me the most
Lame villains, poor story, ridiculously easy gym battles
The Exp. Share and Amie broke the game and I don't have the patience for Super Training, which probably breaks it even MORE

Plus: "Pika pika"

...what...? Why...why did they think that was necessary? Why only Pikachu?

And I have yet to challenge a Sky Trainer, plus I probably haven't seen 60% of the actual Kalosian Pokémon since they're overrun by older Gen species

Rambling...
Spoiler:
What I'd love to see is a Gen I/III Remake again

VoltYellow and AquaBlue (since we've already had red and green covered)

Introduce Jessie and James
Make Giovanni similar to his Origins counterpart
Expand on the Sevii Islands plotline
After defeating Blaine, you have the option of going to the islands, but instead of helping Bill and Celio, you'd the Rocket Warehouse mission and meet Archer and Ariana
Finishing that unlocks extra dialogue when you face Giovanni in Viridian City
"...what? You've taken out our branch in the islands?...No matter, they'll just have to relocate elsewhere..."

As for postgame content...surprise! You get to challenge the Johto League, and after that, you climb Mt.Silver to see a familiar face at the peak...

Spoiler:
You'd also be able to sync your HGSS game to be able to battle against the team you had thdn
