When building a new team, are there any processes you go through? Like do you make sure you have a sweeper or a tank in every team you make? What's your process of elimination to get the 6 Pokemon to fit your role best?

For me I always like to have 2 sweepers, 1 for physical and 1 for special. Then I have 2 bulky pokemon for physical defense and special defense respectively. Lastly I like to have a tank that dishes out damage while taking plenty of hits and a member that can set up entry hazards.

I tend to go:
1 lead
1 lead support
3 "core" Pokemon
1 "glue"

I tend to play Bulky Offense or Balance since I love to switch out Pokemon. I also try to bring in a Pokemon who can add entry hazards as well a removing them. Or if I'm lazy or need a team on the fly, I throw in random Pokemon and hope they work. :P

Usually what I try to go for is making sure that the pokes cover each other's type weaknesses to some extent via what they resist/are immune to. If you're using a (Mega) Dianice, you're probably gonna wanna have stuff that resists Steel/Ground/Water/etc, right? Try to fit a hazard setter and a Spinner/Defogger in if I can. Often times the team starts with a particular Pokemon I want to use.

Usually my teams tend to be balance or offensive teams, but I think that the first thing anyone should do when team-building is decide which of the 5 main team archetypes (Hyper Offensive, Offensive, Balance, Semi-Stall, and Stall) you want to use. Unless you're Elf; just psyduck all other team archetypes and go stall =p

not like I'm the best team builder tho

I mostly opt for balance and when building a team, I choose a specific Pokemon I want to build a team around. Choose that Pokemon, build a core around it, add some support that can deal with stuff my team struggles against and finally add Azumarill a late game cleaner.

I'm not good at preparing for threats, though.

You got a thing!
It varies, but usually I will build my team from the bottom up. If I have a certain Pokémon or core in mind, then I’ll build the team around them and select Pokémon that allow them to perform their jobs more easily. I never really consider a team done, there is usually always room for improvement and I may go through several drafts of a team before finding a combination that handles most things effortlessly. I’m more of an offensive player, so luckily teambuilding isn’t as hard as it might be with other playing styles, especially when a lot of go-to Pokémon come equipped with base 295 attack these days.

I'm still setting stuff up for ORAS, so I keep rotating stuff in to test synergy. I've got about 18 mons that I like to rotate in.

I currently have 11 teams on Showdown, but that's always subject to change since I'm often deleting/making new teams since I can never settle on a few.

On 3DS, I don't have set teams lol. I just have ~4 boxes of battle ready pokes that I throw together for Battle Spot battles.

I try to have a bit of balance.
And by "balance" I mean form a battalion of absolute world destroyers to completely and utterly shred and annihilate every conceivable foe!

.....Not really. I try to split my team stat-wise to start off - Like, three in the physical department and three in the special department. I try to have a sweeper, bulky-offensive and tank/wall within these halves. I also try for hazard-setting or status-inflicters if I can. For example, my team as of now is:
Mega Beedrill - Physical sweeper, scout, revenge killer
Drapion - Physical bulky-offensive, hazard setter
Avalugg - Physical tank
Chandelure - Special sweeper, revenge killer, spinblocker
Goodra - Special bulky-offensive
Cohagrigus (stupid profanity filter) - Mixed defensive tank, status inflicter, anti-setup, spinblocker

Within this team I tried to cover all bases, but spinners (to remove hazards) and healers (users of healing wish/heal bell) kinda missed my attention. Not enough KABOOM for me. I dunno though, maybe Avalugg can be a spinner.

As well as having an even stat spread and tailoring each Pokemon for a specific purpose, I try to cover for as many types as possible.
Defensive - Plenty of opportunities to switch into a resisted hit
Offensive - Gotta be ready for anything, right?
For example, my special sweeper Chandelure, thanks to Flash Fire and the standard Ghost-type immunities, can switch into THREE types of move with no drawbacks!

Anyway, I digress. I assume I've rambled for so long that most of you are suicidal and murdering yourselves by this point. Sorry!
