In Pokémon, we're permitted to save our game whenever we wish and stop playing; when we start again next time, we're able to pick up from where we left off.

What are our thoughts on the saving system main-series Pokémon games have--are we fond of it, or not so much? Up to now, we have chance to have only one save file in each cartridge; do we find ourselves using any external device every now and again to lift that limit (PowerSaves, for example), and utilize multiple save files?

Personally, I'm all right with is. However, I feel it would likely be best if they were to permit us to make multiple saves rather than one. Of course, this could open doors to many negative effects (duplicating and hacking, perhaps), but from a fan's perspective, especially if casual, I believe it would be extremely nifty.

Personally I think saving on Gen 6 is a lot better than on the previous games; like, it's MUCH quicker than the Gen 5 games at least, which makes it really handy in case they game 'shuts up' during save states, which happened to me a lot when I was playing the Gen 4 games. =(

But yeah, multiple save states would be really handy; especially if you have siblings who play the same game with you, so they can save their game on a different state than yours. Fire Emblem and the majority of the new nintendo games have this often; it can really work the same way for pokemon too.

I feel that multiple save files would it make it more difficult to battle and trade pokemon since now we use the same friend codes that's in our systems.

I do love that we can save anywhere and anytime unlike the spin-offs like Colosseum where you needed a PC to save and sometimes in unhelpful locations. I love that saving gets faster and faster every gen so far. I remember I fell in love with the saving speed in 5th gen because 4th gen was painfully slower than 3rd gen. Now 6th gen saving makes 5th gen look painfully slow lol.

Gotta agree with the quick save times; those are amazing. It makes online interactions and entering/exiting Battle Facilities much less of a hassle.

I prefer having only one save file because it allows the player to be the character (e.g. associate with with the character) versus only experiencing the storyline (as you would a book). With multiple save files each save feels more disposable and not as precious.
Also preventing players from getting multiple starters, legendaries and whatnot.

I was never a fan of Save Points in games, because they always make me feel like being forced to go through the next part of the game until I find another Save Point. Games in general should, in my opinion, be like books in this regard: get as far as you want, make a bookmark, return later and continue where you left off.

That being said, I really love that you can save everywhere in Pokemon games, it's also good that they speeded everything up in Gen 6, those saving times in the older games just felt like becoming longer and longer.

About multiple save files, I'm not so sure. I just feel that they would make everything more complicated and the worst part is: having multiple files side by side can easily go wrong as you could end up unintentionally overriding one of them by another one and everything would be gone. Then again, I'm always paranoid, when it comes to these things; I suppose they could easily implement a system where accidental overridings can be avoided for the most parts. ^^

Having multiple save files might be nifty, because sometimes I feel like wanting to starting over the game without wiping out the save data, so having the second (and probably third) slot would be nice. And I feel like saving in Gen VI has been much faster than Gen IV and V for some reason, as well.

I've actually never really had a problem with save points in games like EarthBound, or Final Fantasy. It always seemed like a goal to get to for me, because sometimes I'd have nowhere else to go. Of course, that being said, since Pokemon's goals are really straight-forward, it would seem like a hassle for save points in the main-series games. So I feel like the saving mechanic is beautiful, especially since you don't really need to SAVE in order to stop playing anymore; ever since the DS allowed sleep mode, you could just close it whenever you wanted (mid-battle, even!), and conserve battery life while still being in-game.

Multiple saves... I feel like it wouldn't work on main-series Pokemon games, but it would be nice in games like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, because that's not really transferable progress. If you want multiple save files, get a Powersaves (back up your save file, delete the one on your cart, make a new file, back THAT one up, and load the old one), or just use an emulator. :P

I think the saving system is fine as it is right now. The saving time has drastically decreased with every new generation, to the point where in gen 6 it barely takes a second, something I'm a huge fan of because I'm paranoid and I like saving my game like every 10 seconds.

Things like multiple save files, or allowing you to save and load in the middle of a battle are not exactly needed and would just open the door to new ways of cheating and abusing the game engine.

The saving system right now is pretty good. Its fast (especially in Gen 6) and simple. Like many others, I do wish we could have more than one save file. That would be awesome. Hopefully in the future though!

I enjoy the speed of saving. It would be nice to have an extra file so I wouldn't have to erase my only file all the time to restart, but I feel like the makers are usually full of excuses so I'm not planning on that anytime soon. Honestly I've been playing like this for so long I'm just used to it anyway.

I still wish we could save in the middle of a battle. There are so many times where I'm in a battle and something comes up and I just need to get out of it right away. Not counting on it though lol.

Aw yes the quicker save times.....~

Personally I'd love multiple save files., as I repeatedly play the games but don't like restarting my games and X and Y aren't on ROMs yet, so multiple saves would be great.
However friend codes and trading, anything done with other games would just be way too hard for me to try figuring it out, good thing I don't work at Game Freak. ;3

I believe there was a set of three games that were Pokemon and had 3 save files allowed on it, but they were Mystery Dungeon downloads in Japanese only. :/

They were the 3 PMD games that were on the wii. The reason they had multiple saves was possibly due to a wii being played by more than one person and generaly people don't let others play their ds or 3ds games. I want multiple saves for the sole purpose of doing challenges. I'd have my main profile for my main stuff and a second one for single player challenge fun. Right now I'm doing a gen 1 challenge and the save speed diffrence is insane.

Gen VI's saving system is surely the most convenient, yes. But i've never used anything like PowerSaves to back up any saves of mine - not because i'm against it (which i'm not), but because I just never got around to using them and it doesn't look like something I would really want to do. With only one save file available in present games, I don't care too much about it, even if i've shelled out over $100 total in extra copies for fun playthroughs.

I save every moment I can. Sometimes, I find myself saving even though I just have saved a few moments back, just because I battled a trainer.

Multiple save-files would be a blessing to me. It would permit people to freely play challenges without disturbing their main account.

I'm a fan of the quicker saving times now. Gen 4 took an age and with no indication of how much longer it would take (catch a Pokemon? Change the position of a few in a box? 'Saving a lot of data...'), and gen five was only somewhat quicker and at least gave some indication of how much progress was made. Gen 6 however is almost instant with it, and there's no 'do you want to overwrite save data' message for a while as well (a needless warning message).

I would like additional save files, as they would be useful for challenges. It also wouldn't be hard to avoid the trouble of overwriting the wrong file (just let the player only be able to save over the file they selected on the main menu). But I remain sceptical that we'll ever see it happen; multiple files means it's easy to catch them all without trading online, and I doubt they'd want to diminish aspect that too much. There are ways around it, but...

I would looove multiple save slots, it would save me either buying another version of the game, or having to transfer all the Pokémon I want to keep. I'm actually surprised they haven't implemented this yet, perhaps in the next generation.

The faster save time might just be the best new feature of Gen VI. Lol actually there are a ton of cool new things but seriously it's a great change.

I recently started using PowerSaves to back up my data. It's awesome knowing that my Pokémon collection will be safe unless by some catastrophe my computer, external hard drive, game cart, and Pokébank all fail simultaneously. Multiple save files in-game would be much welcome, but for $30 Powersaves is the next best thing.

I'm fine with one save file. It's never really bothered me, which I know most people find strange considering I like to replay my games over and over for challenges or just...for the sake of playing, haha. But yeah, I usually end up having multiple copies (no shame lol) so eh.

As for saving, obviously I have to talk about DPPt here and complain about SAVING A LOT OF DATA. If you so much as touch your PC, then hoo boy, you did a LOT! And you gotta save all that there computer usage! lol And then gen VI saves SO FAST that I sometimes save three times in a row because I totally missed it. lol

The save speed is soso much better in the sixth generation games like you've no idea. I never did like saving in past games because of how long it took, especially the fourth and fifth generations... ugh. Would be awesome to have more save slots but it's not something I can ever see happening haha. I'll just be glad the speed was improved on as much as it was since I've always saved frequently.

It would be nice to save during battle, as a kid who played Pokemon all the time as a kid, a lot of times when dinner was ready I was in the middle of a battle so I had to finish and save.
Whenever I catch a Pokemon or have one level up I always save
One does not simply get too old for Pokemon

With Pokémon I've always saved my game in a Pokémon Center out of habit. I don't know why, but I've just always done it.

Having save points in games aren't necessarily a bad thing in certain games. They create a spot to strive towards, and usually are handled well within reason. Some games do not use them well and are a pain to follow up with. For example on how they're handled well and poorly we'll look at the Dead Space series:

Dead Space is a third person science fiction horror game based on the cracker class starship the USG Ishimura. Throughout the game, you fight your way across the ship, restoring systems, fighting off enemies, the biological hazards, and even the mechanical hazards. What makes the game great in terms of saving functionality is that the saving stations are located throughout the game in convenient places that do not warrant you to track back four or three hours just to reach where you left off. In addition to handling the manual save it also offers an autosave feature which is quite handy as well. Dead Space 2 utilizes the same formula for saving: fight your way here and there and you'll likely find yourself face to face with a save station.

Dead Space 3 on the other hand is a pile of regurgitated trash so putrid and so foul that it even causes Muk and Grimer to flee in terror. There was no manual save in Dead Space 3, and there was no option to hold your place besides an autosave that didn't even function properly, and you would find yourself 8 leagues backward from where you were from where you left off. Example: you fight your way through a vicious area filled with creepy critters. You make it to the next area and you're out of ammo and it autosaves. Great, time to take a break. You come back a day later to find yourself in the room you once cleared of hostiles and you have no ammo. Dead Space 3's autosaves saves the state of your ammunition more accurately than your position.

So in short, manual saves are more effective than autosaves. So I believe that Pokémon should never stray from the time proven formula of saving wherever you may be (perhaps they could disable saving in the Elite Four to provide added difficulty). I also enjoy the fact that the saving function has been much improved with the latest editions of the games. pretty soon they'll have it to the point where it'll save nigh instantaneously.

Permitted to save? You say that almost like games don't normally have save functions. Hehe.

The lack of multiple save slots has simply been retarded since the DS games (I'm convinced Inifinite Space fills out the space on the DS cart far more fully than any Pokemon game ever has or would, due to the limited character sprite palette and low bitrate soundtrack apparently being necessary to fit all those 3D ship models in, and yet it still has about 5 save slots). The lack of autosave has never really bothered me about Pokemon. It might be a nice addition in case one forgets to save manually (which no one could really be faulted for given how autosaving is standard in most other games these days), but I would certainly not want it to be the only means of saving al la Minecraft.

do we find ourselves using any external device every now and again to lift that limit (PowerSaves, for example), and utilize multiple save files?
There is a way to lift that limit? Horey shet.

I save religiously. All the time. That was annoying to do there for a time, because the saving was so slow in a couple of recent games. I'm glad that it's faster in ORAS.

Would be awesome to have more than one save file, because I really never enjoy beating my game, and raising my mons and then wiping the file once I want to replay it. I always just kind of close my eyes and do it. lmfao Not everyone can just go out and buy another copy.
