We go from one of the most versatile genres, to one that's a bit more restricted. I feel like this genre is making a comeback into the mainstream media with shows like Criminal Minds, and I believe Sherlock. I've never seen Sherlock though, so I could be totally wrong on that assumption. If someone has seen Sherlock, then please let me know.

Anyway, I was first introduced to this genre by reading, "The Hardy Boys". Anyone remember those books? They were amazing for eight year old me. Oddly enough, I had never heard of Nancy Drew until years later, and I have no idea why. As I grew up, I fell out of the genre until I started watching Criminal Minds. My favorite aspect about this genre is how they piece everything together. I think it's great, and really shocking if they do things right.

If by Sherlock you mean UK's BBC channel version, it's quite popular (and I watched a few episodes of it). There's also Elementary that is also a modern retelling. Both are pretty entertaining in my opinion.

I've read a few mysteries here and there, including some of the original Sherlock Holmes stories. I too enjoy the genre most when everything comes together.

I have to ask: as someone who's enjoyed the books, did you ever feel like the ghost writer thing made them better or worse in hindsight? Would you pick up a Hardy Boys today and still think it's an enjoyable read?

I do think the mystery genre is making a comeback. In fact, it's already comeback. Shows like Dateline are common on television, and a share of both good and bad mystery books are on the shelves.

Oh man, it's been ten years since I've picked up one of those books. I can't say I really remember how they went, unfortunately.
