A 2008 report from ,.., the Pentagon claims that Russian President Vladimir Putin has Asperger’s syndrome...

The report states, in part: “Putin’s neurological development was significantly interrupted in infancy.”

The report is based on videos of Mr. Putin’s public actions, starting in 2000, and hypothesizes that his mother suffered a stroke during pregnancy that caused an “insult” to his brain...

[Report authors] did say that Mr. Putin’s “primary form of compensation for his disorder is extreme control and this is reflected in his decision style and how he governs,”...

With tension increasing between the US and Russia, one may think of this as some kind of ploy.

I'm kind of curious to see the full report, if it ever gets released.
What do you think of this?

EDIT: This post contains a link to the study.

This is totally a ploy. Putin is too varied to be suffering from Asperger's. His interests extend to so many different subjects and he balances more than , I think, the President of the United States at any one time. This is just back and forth between our two countries "NO, YOU!"

If he really, truly has Aspberger's than Putin is the most functional person that's suffering from Asperger's syndrome I've ever seen. I can also say this is insulting to the people truly afflicted by the disease, and more hypocritically than that the fact that the US is spreading 'Patient/Doctor' confidentiality (if true) in the mud. No, I do not believe that Putin is suffering from this disease. He was KGB for crying out loud! Don't think they would have had him operating unless they knew for certain he was fully capable.

I just want to point out that Asperger's, like all disorders on the autism spectrum, is not a disease and that you can be a fully functioning and capable human being even if you are affected by an ASD like Aspergers.

I think this is probably just fear mongering and attempted slander using people's fear of autistic disorders as the mechanism. Quite frankly whether or not he has Asperger's or not is totally irrelevant.

Yeah I think this is quite a dangerous and slippery slope that they are using by trying to say Putin is "Mental", in many ways its bullying. Its could be seen as offensive to people in the ASD community.

As a member of said community, I am more annoyed that ASDs are being portrayed as "mental" than I am at being likened to Putin in all honesty.

Yeah, like others have said, this is a ploy. If he does have aspergers, then it's irrelevant. Whether or not it serves to discredit Putin more than the insinuation that aspergers = evil tyrant discredits those on the spectrum is something I reserve judgement on, but people's attitudes to this need to be watched nonetheless. It seems like something that would be rallied by the 'vaccinations cause autism' movement, that bastion of sick parents who believe aspergers/autism is something worse than possibly fatal sicknesses.

The assertion is ridiculous. If you read the actual paper of the study, you'll find that it is horribly written, inconsistent, and incomplete (no hypothesis!). The methodology is unreliable and outdated by 85 years. It is not peer-reviewed, so it is definitely not scientific.

The Kremlin spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, rightly countered: "That is stupidity not worthy of comment."

I've attached the actual study for anyone interested.

I'm someone with ASD as well (mainly autism, but with some Aspergers traits thrown in) and I can say that it's a silly excuse to call him a "mental". I know how serious the word can mean because my own brother often labels me a mental and it's really sad when I hear about people with ASD conditions being called that.

It will be interesting to see the full report should it ever see the light of day. It's totally a ploy.

I should point out I meant that what when I said "mental" that not my opinion but was pointing out that the report was presenting Aspergius in a wholly negative way, which only provides more ammunition to the anti ASD school of thought (which is probably bigger than most people think).

I hope that my poor phrasing of my first post hasn't offended anyone.

I really think US has gone too far this time. I'm pretty sure Putin knows what he's doing - he wants his Russian soil back and doesn't accept a world order where Russia has no place. I'm not saying Putin is a good leader and think that he should have had friendly talks with Ukraine and Poroshenko over Crimea and Eastern Ukraine (just like China and Portugal over Macao) - and luckily, it seems that the Minsk armistice is showing its positive effects. But I severely doubt that Putin might have a mental problem.

Can someone fill me out on the symptoms of Asperger's Syndrome? I know from the movie My Name Is Khan people with it show a fear/phobia of the color yellow and are slightly autistic, but nothing more.

How do we even have access to Putin's medical history? I don't think an announcement from the Pentagon is really appropriate on the matter of his mental health.

It really does come off as goading during an already tense moment.

I think its been assembled by American "experts" rather than reading Putins actual medical records.

They like to being a psychological profile of other leaders so they can judge their future actions.

That yellow thing was just a trait of the movie character.

Asperger's is very similar to your typical autism, common traits are:
  • Difficulties understanding social norms
  • Social Anxiety
  • Struggles coping with changes to routines
  • Routine forming behaviour

That's a very basic outline and there's a lot more to it then that, I suggest if you're curious about it you do further research.

Also reading my own list has further solidified my belief that whoever is responsible for all this is an idiot.
