Ori and the Blind Forest
Publisher: Moon Studios
Consoles: Xbox One, PC
Release: March 11th, 2015

"Over the past four years, Moon Studios has been feverishly working on Ori and the Blind Forest.

At Moon Studios, we all grew up playing games like Super Metroid, Zelda: A Link to the Past, etc. and with Ori, we wanted to recapture the magic of these games.

Ori and the Blind Forest is a bit of a genremix – It’s a ‘Metroidvania‘, but with a stronger platforming focus and light RPG elements, all set within an atmospheric world.

Naturally we tried to push 2D gaming forward on all fronts: We tried to make every single screen in Ori look like a painting come to life while making sure that the controls are still pixel-perfect.

We’ve been taking lessons from games like Super Metroid and A Link to the Past in order to really bring back this sensation you had when you played the games Nintendo was building in the early 90s. The level of polish and the execution of design in these games – we feel – was extraordinary. We felt strongly that children and adults today should get that same feeling again. Remember the first time you played Zelda or Metroid when you were a child? We hope that years from now people will also remember the first time they got to play Ori and the Blind Forest.

We also push the story angle really hard. We explored some new ways of telling stories within 2D games and we’ve been heavily influenced by Ghibli/Miyazaki as well as by great animated films of the 90s like The Lion King or The Iron Giant.

Ori is a bit of a coming-of-age story. The player is put into the role of a forest spirit, who – over the course of his journey – has to find out more about his role within the world he’s living in. We tried to create memorable characters in an atmospheric world and to craft a story that players will truly care about!"

Oh wow, this game looks majestic. I feel like that could be a highly polished (visually) Donkey Kong Country. That's the vibe I get. I think I'd end up getting it if I had an Xbox One for sure.

This remind me a LOOOOT of Rayman Origins. That game is one of favorite platformers and the art style is amazing. Definitely would buy if I could.

Did you feel that Rayman Origins had basic platforming? I think while that game is visually impressive, the gameplay is simplistic and not very challenging.

I don't tend to over-analyze platformers (they're my least favorite genre after racing games), but I do agree to a certain extent that the gameplay was simplistic - but it was mostly in order to keep up with the fast-paced running. I played the game co-op, and me and my brother/cousin always raced each other to get to the caged girl in the monsters or get all the yellow money fairies.

I disagree however when you say it wasn't challenging - a lot of the later levels of the game rely on timing your jumps correctly and avoiding unpredictable traps. This is why the game is way more fun when co-op - you have someone to help you out when you mess up.

This game however looks ten times better in terms of graphics.

Also please tell me I'm not the only one who played music with the main menu selection of save file

A cute game on the Xbone? :( I never thought I'd be jealous of that of all things. Yeah, I would totally buy this if I had an Xbone. Now I'm sad.

I had been waiting on this forever. Honestly one of the most beautiful games I have ever played in my life, in both how it's presented, and how its narrated. I'm still playing though it but man, it's immersive. It's such a fun platformer already, even though I expected it to be more of a story driven game. Loving this nonetheless, I'm so glad it came out so solid on PC. I heard some bad things about the Xbone frame rate...

Frame rate is actually just fine on the Xbox One. I've been playing the console version of the game for awhile now and I haven't had any dropped frame rates yet. I have to agree that this game is extremely immersive. That beginning though...all the heart strings pulled.

Man it was so emotional! Would you say you're running it at 60 frames then? I'm a bit of a performance nerd so I'm interested haha.

I'd say so, yes. It's very smooth overhaul and I believe it performs a lot better than a good amount of Xbox One games currently out.

I really like the art style, but from the looks of it so far (in this trailer, at least) it just seems like a very pretty platformer, and I don't know if that's enough to draw me in as I'm not a huge fan of the genre just on its own. The description is more promising though, and I'm interested to see what these "light RPG elements" are. The story aspect sounds pretty solid as well, and I'm always a sucker for a game with a good story.

I can understand why you might feel that way. I've only gotten through the first chapter or so and I wouldn't say its too difficult right now. I'll let you know more about it once I complete more of the game. Why don't you like platformers though?

This is one of few games I'm really jealous that ended up on XBone exclusively =D
I will hope for PS4 release xD

I went to check the price just now. For me it's €20 on Steam to buy, which is pretty decent considering it only came out a few days ago.

It's not that I don't like them, I just buy a lot of Humble Bundles and so many indie games in those tend to be some kind of platformer, so I've just gotten a little bored of them. :P
