Its a huge read, but I'll put footnotes. Basically:
-DeNA and Nintendo will make Nintendo IP games for mobile. And perhaps PC? That's unclear for now. At the moment, its basically mobile, but also for Codename NX.
-Codename NX is the next gaming platform from Nintendo, info and reveal coming next year apparently. Has a new concept as well, which is probably some sort of steam thing.(My speculation, but if its a cross platform thing with all of the below, it sounds like it)
-Club Nintendo successor will be their network apparently. Loyalty rewards, cross-play, the works. Will be the central core of the NX.
-Hell has frozen over apparently, and we're in a new age.

Nintendo finally concedes existence of smartphones. LOL

LOL yeah. Was watching the announcement live. This momentous occasion's press conference just happened 30 minutes after it got announced. Madness. LOL

But yeah the announcement/press conference has Iwata going into a through analysis of the changing gaming market with the smartphone and the Internet as a whole. Amazing stuff happening tonight.

In all seriousness though, Nintendo going mobile isn't that bad, as they stated that the traditional games will stay on the main platforms while the other stuff goes mobile. A touch/motion based Warioware, Picross, Pokemon Puzzle League, Pokemon TCG and so on won't be so bad to have on mobile in truth, and they can do a lot with some other properties as well.

Nah, they specifically said no F2P. It's just too corrosive an idea in mobile gaming tbh.
All the games I mentioned easily can fit within the 5-10 dollar/euro price range. Hell the ePicross series is a perfect example. Also this can help revive franchises that haven't been touched in years, like Advance Wars and Another Code. I wasn't always against Nintendo going mobile, but I was hesitant. This looks like a serious commitment to make things as segregated as possible to offer everything to everyone, so now I'm even more open to it. As long as Nintendo doesn't require a connection like most mobile developers do now. :/

I personally find that Nintendo going to smartphone gaming is a good thing, besides, I've been having thoughts, if SEGA did go to mobile gaming, why not Nintendo? I just hope that they won't force anyone to be online just to play the game.

I'm curious to see how such a move can play out. Nintendo doing cross-platform between smartphones and what? Game consoles and handhelds? This is going to be fun to watch. And what if this is Japan-only? What if North America and Europe get different replacements for Club Nintendo?
Maybe Nintendo will test it on Japan first, and then announce it in other regions too. I think it would be wasted potential if Nintendo won't announce and launch it in the West, as well.

If they get this right, they could make a ton of money. It will definitely be interesting to see what they have planned being such a lucrative market.

Unlike the Club Nintendo membership service that Nintendo has been operating, the new membership service will include multiple devices and create a connection between Nintendo and each individual consumer regardless of the device the consumer uses. This membership will form one of the core elements of the new Nintendo platform that I just mentioned.
Well now we know why Club Nintendo is going down.
I think I'll take a "wait and see" attitude with this...after all, diversification into the mobile market hasn't done Square Enix any favours. The amount of crap they've churned out over the last few years is phenomenal, and I'd hate to see Nintendo go down the same route. It'll be interesting to see where they take it, though. After the success of the Wii and the DS, I won't be discounting any of Nintendo's plans until I've actually seen and experienced them personally.

I hope this doesn't spell an end to dedicated handhelds or consoles, though. I've never cared for mobile gaming in general, and I'm not about to start.

It seems that Nintendo either has an ace up their sleeve or they are seriously going to flop. Being the wildcard in the gaming industry, I am curious how this will out and how it would effect those who play on a handheld or console like myself.

I can state with near certainty that we will not be getting one of these for mobile devices outside Japan so long as the TCGO exists. And maybe there won't even be one in Japan despite Japan not being covered by the TCGO. Unfortunately, though, they've only released an iPad app for the PTCGO so far, so it's not widely available on mobile at the moment either.

I am interested to see what other titles Nintendo will come out with, though.

As long as they aren't crap and gimmicky, I'll keep an open mind to this.

Sounds amazing yet scary. I hope we have more news soon.

By the way, NX? Would that be like Nintendo 10? lol

As I am a robot, I am incapable of dreaming, but... how shall I put it? I have very much longed to

Iwata explains why Nintendo will be developing on mobile platforms with DeNA:

Quite a few of you must be wondering why Nintendo, which has never deviated from its cautious stance in regard to the possibility of deploying its game business on smart devices, has now changed its policy.
Please note, however, that I was not dismissing the idea of making games for smart devices per se as I stated at the January 2014 Corporate Management Policy Briefing that a development team of Nintendo would create a smart device application, and please also note that I had not ruled out the possibility of making games when we make use of these devices.

On the other hand, I really had to thoroughly consider how we would be able to grow the business by maintaining and nurturing the value of Nintendo IP and what conditions would make that happen, because the value of content can easily be deflated in the digital world and, especially on smart devices, it is not easy to maintain content value since the lifespan tends to be very short as much content is released and then replaced so quickly. We are making these announcements today because we now have Nintendo’s answer to these questions.

Just looking at the fact that several applications that earn great profits are highly visible in the smart device game business, people in general appear to see it as an easy money market. The fact is, however, it is a highly competitive market and only a handful of content providers have been able to show enduring results. If Nintendo cannot make it to that handful of winners, it does not make sense for us to be engaged in the software business on smart devices.

Accordingly, we had been thinking that if we ever decided to do it, we would have to put ourselves in the best position to prosper.

For many years, Nintendo has shown results as a company which produces products that satisfy consumers with their high quality at the time of the purchase. For the content on smart devices, on the other hand, to be appreciated by consumers, they must provide ever-evolving services in addition to being high-quality products.

Hopefully this doesn't cause any negative assumptions.

I think this is a step in the wrong direction. The quality of Phones games is often poor. I am not in the least bit interested in phone or tablet gaming.

However if they make apps that are dependent on you owning a WiiU or 3DS only and your Phone/tablet interacts with them (i.e. extra controller or whatever) that could be interesting.

I think many experienced gamers are suspicious of phone games anyway, so getting long term console/handheld gamers on board may prove challenging.

Finally I would guess the end products will be nothing special, practically just like the flash games you can play on the Pokemon.com site (like the ones being used in the Pokemon Game month thread).

What in the name of Miyamoto is going on?

Nintendo on Smart Devices? It can't be true...

This is amazing. But what if...what if they start making free-to-play games? Dammit they'd better not.
You mean like with Pokémon Shuffle, Rusty's Real Deal Baseball, and Steel Diver: Sub Wars?

That would actually help A LOT to have a cloud based system for saved games. Because of human error, we tend to mess up, A LOT. So having our saves stored somewhere over the Nintendo will be greatly appreciated by me, and others who buy mostly digital games.
