Remember back in the day, on our Gamecubes and GBAs? Then the nice little DS came out. Then that really cool Wii was Wii-leased to the public? Now look where we are. 3DS, Wii U, this new "NX" thing to be revealed with more info eventually. Doesn't this scare you how fast gaming technology is moving? I see all over on reddit and other forums with topics like "I just bought X and now X is out."

I don't know about you but I think Nintendo can slow down just a bit. Even it has been since 2012 I had my 3DS I still am not ready for the next generation of Nintendo handhelds. I just got my Wii U in November of last year too, so I am definitely NOT ready for what ever is coming next.
I don't think it's just Nintendo that are moving too fast; the industry in general is moving too fast. I recall Sony saying that the PS3 would have a ten year life cycle...well, if that were the case, the PS4 wouldn't be coming out until next year. But then, they're still making PS3 games, so until they stop I'd say that it's still going strong. I'd also say the same applies to Nintendo: I wouldn't consider the Wii U or the 3DS supplanted by the next generation until the games stop coming. I'm not concerned about their next project, so long as they continue to support the Wii U and 3DS for a few more years.

On the subject of Nintendo: it's Nintendo. I don't see any point in getting worried about their future plans until they happen. I mean, nobody thought that the Wii or DS was going to sell well at all...the Wii in particular. Both were hugely successful. Nintendo have (or had, considering how poorly the Wii U is doing) a way of exceeding expectations, and they make consistently high quality games...barring the odd exception here and there. On the surface, it's quite alarming that they're already planning another device, and they've made some questionable decisions of late, but...well, I think they'll surprise everyone. It's what they do. I'm not going to start panicking until I see exactly what it is they've got planned, regardless of what the signs point towards. With the New 3DS only just released, they're not going to be discarding the current generation any time soon, so what harm if they introduce the next generation next year, or the year after? It's how they stay ahead in the industry...and considering their unique position within said industry, they need that advantage.

Consoles are expensive, and they're long-term investments. I'd expect a console to last at least seven or eight years, which I don't think is unreasonable. If they want to release the next generation in the meantime, that's fine, just as long as they continue to support the previous generation for a time. As there are considerably more developers out there now working on games for these consoles I'm not too worried about the next gen arriving sooner rather than later either - there are still going to be a huge number of games on the system. That, plus it takes the next generation about two years to build up a decent library anyway...PS4 and Xbone still don't really have one in my opinion.

tl;dr I won't start moaning about generations getting shorter until games stop coming for them within about a year of the next gen coming out.

Historically speaking, yes Nintendo is moving at a facer pace. At a market level, its logical due to the faster pace of the market, and its basically a move for adaptiblity. Not to mention the 3DS was out back in 2011, and the Wii U in 2012, which by 2017 means that 5 years have passed, which is more then enough time, especially in todays market.

Everyone seems to forget that every Nintendo console has a lifespan of 5-6 years until a new one is released. NES was 1985-1990, SNES was 1990-1996, N64 was 1996-2001, GCN was 2001-2006, Wii was 2006-2012, and the Wii U will be 2012-2017, so the Nintendo NX will be released by 2017, mark my words. People really like to jump into conclusions without doing any research on what's really going on.

I mean, I don't feel like it's a bad thing that Nintendo are moving too fast. They were always one of the fast growing companies, and what's so good about Nintendo is that you can never know what's coming next. Who knows what'll come in Gen 7?

Yeah, it's definitely the industry that is moving too fast. Nintendo is just trying it's hardest to keep up with the changing environment.
But things are pretty stable for now. Just because the NX has been announced doesn't mean that it is the end of the Wii U.
And I doubt they will move from the 3DS that quick. At most, they'll probably just have a few new games for the New 3DS. They are likely to still have some regular 3DS games as well.
Meh.

Obviously they have to catch up.
If they can't make their consoles HW-wise at least on par with other consoles of gen the Nintendo console belongs to, they obviously have to make a new one to catch up.

Nintendo is trying to keep up on the technology, like all the other consoles. That's why they are where they are now.
(I kinda miss the 2D games tho.... everything is in 3D now...)

I personally agree with this, but I think Nintendo is doing quite well while the others are semi-stalling it seems. Having a fast moving industry is not always the best thing since if the technology develops too fast, then consoles stack onto of each other and games will be stretched too thin, this is can only lead the industry back down the road to another Video Game Crash.

So if Nintendo is lagging a big behind, it might be better than stick up at the top with the others. In other words, the lower you are, the easier the drop, the higher you are, the harder the fall will be.

i caught your pun hohoh. i'm actually upset how fast nintendo is moving. i might get halfway through a game and BAM nintendo releases a new system. they make it so it's not fun to play on the old systems by shutting off internet functions which really forces you into keeping up with the latest consoles.

2017, I think we'll have both a new Nintendo handheld and console by then. So, we're on track so far. Not too fast. It's in line with their past releases
