Sandbox survival games have been trending and popping up all over for quite some time now, especially on the indie game market - games like Stranded, Don't Starve, Rust, The Forest, DayZ... the list goes on and on. These games where you are dumped in the middle of nowhere, then tasked to survive by gathering rocks and sticks to craft tools and build homes have become increasingly popular, and personally, I welcome them because I love survival games and I think they're lots of fun. :D

Are you a fan of this genre, and which ones have you played so far? What's your playstyle like in these games - do you prefer playing it safe by avoiding hostile animals/enemies and living off of foraged food (at least in the beginning), or are you more likely to take risks and play offensively from the start?

Yup, I agree, they've been a lot more fun ever since we all started playing together. :) Actually, I'm only really of fan of these type of games if they're multiplayer. Surviving by yourself is no fun; it gets really lonely after a while. I like playing games like Minecraft and Don't Starve Together because surviving with friends is much more enjoyable than surviving alone.

Contrary to my usually cautious nature in most games, I'm take a lot more risks in these type of games. I've noticed that in both MC and DST, I'm much more willing to rush enemies to take them out.

Love them. Probably one of my favorite types of games. I can't wait to get my laptop fixed so then I can play some if them with y'all. But anywho, I love the suspense that these games can provide. The fact that at any point you can die and permadeath is waiting for you is exhilarating.

Expect some online survive VG action happening in the near future.

I honestly haven't played these sorts of games before, but I'm very interested in the responses here - what makes them really fun to play? o: The adrenaline rush on trying to survive and the challenges that goes along with it?

I mean, I play Minecraft, I guess...? Haven't really explored the genre all that much. Sometimes I feel like there's too many of them these days. .-.

In Minecraft, at least, I usually just overstock on basic needs and fight my way to the top of the food chain.

In my opinion it's that, and the satisfaction you get after you build an impenetrable fortress and most things can't even hurt you anymore. That's also usually the time when I get bored and start over. c:

I dunno, I've just always loved these games! I think the very first one I played was actually Lost in Blue on the DS (please tell me someone else remembers this), that was lots of fun. There was actually a main objective in that one where you can escape the deserted island, but I just liked surviving and adding to my fortress/"home" on the island so much I kept delaying the escape and lived on the island forever, even though I had more than enough resources needed to actually win the game. :P

...But to actually answer your question, I agree with Fiddlesticks, putting together an awesome fortress bit by bit is very rewarding, especially since it's so difficult to just survive in the beginning, when you have nothing.

Another big thing for me is exploration. Most of these games have maps that are completely randomly generated, so after establishing a home and having enough to actually survive, I like to pack up a few essentials and wander off to see what kind of cool new things I can find. In Minecraft that usually meant caving/spelunking with Mage and Anna, and in Don't Starve Together, we... haven't really been well off enough to do more exploring than it takes to survive yet, haha.

And lastly, these games are definitely more fun with friends! So again, join usss. :D

Have you guys ever heard of a game called The Pit? Because that is a superb strategy survival game.

Love these types of games because they remind me the most of playing a good ole game of D&D, but I don't have to deal with actual people and I don't get looked at weird for trying to kill everyone and everything I see.
