So people have talked about how all three of the newest home consoles - the Wii U, the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4, were off to terrible starts in that they lacked games going for them and needed to be released later than they were. The Wii U I get that claim about, but there were games for the latter two that i'm sure people might have looked forward to. But going back to the previous generation, with the Xbox 360, that launched in the waning days of 2005 before it really got any games that were worth remembering, and the PlayStation 3, which came in late 2006, is something I doubt anybody will forget being a mess when it first released. That thing was $600 for the console itself and one controller, which wasn't helped by its lack of notable games at the time. It got better, but its release just sucked.

Of the newest consoles, which do you think had the hardest start going for it compared to the others? Did the Wii U's launch top the PS3's in terms of weakness, or did the One or PS4 go worse? Discuss.

Off-hand, I can't think of a console from the sixth generation upwards that hasn't had a terribly weak launch line up of video games. So for that reason, I think the PS3 stands out as the worst launch in the history of video gaming to date for one simple reason: its price point. It was outrageous. Nearly £500 for a video game console with a pitiful launch lineup and measly harddrive space!

The cost of the PS3 at launch and for a couple of years thereafter is one of the main reasons I was driven to buy a 360. It took years for the PS3 to build up its library to justify a purchase, and by that point - mercifully - the price had dropped. Consoles are always expensive when they're first released, but that was just ridiculous...

The Xbox One. Anyone who was following the launch of it knows. Especially with them taking out planned features such as the DRM-lock on all one person's games, and the Kinect being absolutely required, in a "ok fine you win please dont hate us just buy our console" move.

The whole rewinding their decisions was what seemed sketchy to me. Being that I already wasn't a fan of anything Microsoft, their Xbox brand included, as a gamer, I felt that if you're going for an innovation and revolutionizing the community for next generation, you're gonna have to come up with better ideas. That did nothing for their marketing or PR, it was damage control.

The Wii U was straight up awful. I don't think it's really recovered from that yet, if it ever will.
Its launch gave it a poor rep initially but it isn't the reason it's selling awful. The Wii U really turned around on the former, but not the latter. .
I loved the Wii U at launch just for Nintendo Land and NSMBU with the family on christmas.

Can't speak for the other two. I know people are still bitter about the XBox One though.

I think the Wii U had an okay launch because it at least had Mario going for it, but that's standard for Nintendo consoles to have that definitive Mario title. And while it did get more games going for it like Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros, it still had an arguably better launch than the One did.

i'm gonna have to say the wii u, it's just plain awful. imo the only good game on there was smash bros. i also flat out hate the idea for the wii u, the wii was made to make you incorporate movement into everyday gaming and the controller for the wii u seems to defeat that purpose. if this thread was about all poorly introduced consoles i would've mentioned the PS vita but i'll save that rant for another day.

Um... didn't Vita actually get nice launch which made many people, who either sold it by now or no longer use it, buy it?

Vita had a terrible launch, because the only remotely appealing game for it (Gravity Rush, which turned out to be a huge disappointment) was delayed, and it didn't support PS1 titles for quite a while. I got a Vita at launch and didn't touch it for months. Still, at least it wasn't too expensive at the time, all things considered...

I'm gonna have to say no on this one.

Wii U has an amazing library.

EDIT: Vita has way more going for it than Gravity Rush (which I also didn't like). Though admittedly its best (Tearaway and Persona 4) are available on other platforms.

Right now usually people would recommend Danganronpa for the Vita but I personally didn't like them. It's hugely a niche and paritcular handheld at this point, really. Love it for Tearaway and the various downloads I have on it, though.

upon the release date? i don't think there was much going for it besides smash bros. i couldn't find the actual wii u price but the smash bros game itself is $60, which i find ridiculous.

as for the vita, i went to look at it around december of the year it was released and i think my bestbuy had about 5 games for it. i hadn't done any research prior to looking at it at bestbuy but when i got there nothing really caught my eye. it could've been a matter of my taste for the games or my ill prepared bestbuy.

On release date the Wii U had two notable games for it, those being Nintendo Land and New Super Mario Bros U. (Some would argue ZombiU but it's acquired taste.) NSMBU ended up being my favourite Mario game (and I've got my reasons) and Nintendo Land was one of the most fun multiplayer games I played. It's been two years but there's already a bunch of games out that are top quality. Essentially, the Wii U is a lot like the Gamecube. Admittedly not very varied in genres, but the games appeal to everyone and are absolute quality. (The Wii was as well, but the Wii actually had variety and third party support). I'm not gonna start listing all the Wii U games I like because in the end it's subjective and I don't like doing that.

In all honestly I like Smash but it's one of the last games I'd think of when I name all my favourite Wii U games lol. If anything I have so many problems with Smash U, it's one of the most incohesive Wii U game that I played. Normally I'd say 3D World but upon replaying it I found a new appreciation for it.
...how did this turn into a thread about the current library? I thought this was about what they were like at the point of release, and which one was the worst for it! Smash Bros on Wii U wasn't released until quite some time after the console's release, and neither Tearaway nor Persona 4 were available for Vita as launch titles.

I will definitely not dispute the point that the Vita and the Wii U both now have fantastic lineups; the Wii U has carved its own niche in the same way the Wii did, and the Vita has really picked up in the last couple of years; I've spent more time on it consistently than any other console except my PS3. They're both great, and I personally don't regret buying either of them.

When they were first released though, and for several months afterwards, they were pretty poor machines; their libraries didn't develop very quickly at all. Sony couldn't be bothered to support their handheld - and still can't be bothered, outside of making it a glorified PS4 controller - and Nintendo consoles always take time to be worth the purchase, because Nintendo games take a long time to develop. This excludes backwards compatability, of course...but then, the Vita didn't even have that in the beginning.

i think you win for digging up that post haha. oddly enough, this is the first time i've heard about nintendo land but i looked it up and it seems awesome. i guess my first impression of the two systems kept me from glancing back at them but it would seem as if the systems came along quite nicely. i don't want to stray too far away from the topic like meloetta pointed out but i'll have to take a look at the systems again so maybe i can get a better judgement on how they've turned out with the newer game editions.

The PS4 and Xbox one had a worse launch compared to the Wii U. At least the Wii U had a serviceable Mario game. The fact that Knack is still prominently used in PS4 advertisement to this day is psyducking hilarious. The xbox one, seriously the most hated game system in recent memory, although it's solid enough now.
