We all love our heroes, but what is a hero without a villain to drive him/her to acts of greatness? What's a story without an antagonist to provide a threat, to drive the plot forward with their heinous schemes and treacherous acts...even if they're not necessarily entirely in the wrong?

Villains are often given the cold shoulder - after all, their sole purpose to most players is to provide a figure of opposition, and some thoroughly aggravating boss battles. By design, they are often one-dimensional, as they serve as a catalyst for the story to advance...or even exist, because without them there wouldn't be any need for a story. However, on occasion a villain will rise up and prove to be a far more interesting character than the hero they oppose...

So, who are your favourite video game villains? Who did you love? Who did you hate? Who did you love to hate? Did you ever find yourself rooting for the villain instead of the hero?

Ashera from fire emblem was a beast; she virtually commited near genocide to thousands of humans and laguz, as well as lie to hundreds of people who survived, in which they believed that they were the 'chosen ones' and thus Ashera gave them holy-like weapons and armor. Fighting her? She's arguably the hardest Final Boss in the whole Fire Emblem franchise, with all good reason. First you'd have to break each one of her protective 'auras', other wise you won't be able to actually combat her. Even when you've destroyed the auras, there's another catch if you'd want to defeat her - you have to beat her with only the weapons that were 'blessed', which you'll be able to have your weapons blessed at an earlier part of the final chapter, but, yes, it's the only way to harm her or else you won't deal any damage.

I loved Hades from Kid Icarus Uprising; so witty and hilarious! Playing against him is a different story though. He's actually a really tough final boss if you've played him on the highest difficulty, what with his purple lasers of DEATH and his blue blobs of DESTRUCTION, but he's fun to try and beat anyhow!

Dahlia Hearthrone? She was probably one of the most dangerous characters in the Phoenix Wright series: killing off various people one after another like her older sister and Terry Fawles (well, basically she tricked him in committing suicide) just for them to keep quiet about the 'false kidnapping' to steal a priceless gen when she was just 14, as well as Doug Swallow to keep quiet about her, almost killing Phoenix too in the same episode, and she almost killed off Godot after her trial ended that same day.. she tried to kill Maya Fey, and aaaah, so much bloodlust in her, as she tries to masquerade it in this "cute persona" of hers.

Junko Enoshima is practically insane! Traps students in their own schools/islands, wiping their memory clean, causing them to kill each other all for the sake of bringing despair in the world? Who does that? Plus she always takes on different personas in a conversation; like she can be a badass in one, a sort of 'teacher' in another, and have this sorta cute persona in another.. she's really unpredictable.

Handsome Jack from Borderlands. I think that a villain should not be just one that you hate, but one in which you can love as well fm for his personality whether good or bad. That's what makes a good villain. Similar to The Joker from Batman Arkham Asylum and Andrew Ryan from Bioshock - which round off my top three villains - Handsome Jack's personality adds to his villainous deeds. His "Butt Stallion" line had me rolling in laughter and his dialogue in general was a nice balance between comedic and psychopathic. Love me some Handsome Jack, man.

The Joker from Batman Arkham Asylum
"Tell me Bats. What are you really scared of? Failing to save this cesspool of a city? Not finding the Commissioner in time? Me, in a thong?"

...offhand, I can't think of a moment where a villain has made me laugh harder than that moment. Hamill absolutely nailed it with his overall performance in that game. It was a shame the final battle was so anticlimactic, but the stuff he came out with through the game...oh god. xD

Haha that quote just me really excited for Arkham Knight coming out this year. I never played Arkham Origins, but Arkham Asylum and Arkhum City were superb games (which those two games are actually being bundled into a HD Collection later this year!)

Thread title doesn't suggest a thread about villains in any way.

Anyway I feel like I picked Hades from Kid Icarus so many times in these threads that I want to change it up and mention other goods ones.

If you played Ace Attorney, you'll know who I'm talking about and probably don't need any explanations. If you didn't, I ain't spoiling.

I also love Eggman. Classic saturday morning cartoon villain that complements Sonic so well and steals the show. Go figure all of the bad Sonic games have him as more of a side character than the main villain. Even the Sonic Boom cartoon is very good which, unlike the game, has Eggman as the main villain. Eggman is the secret, SEGA.

That gives me a fantastic excuse to wait and buy them for the PS4 when they come out then, aha; I haven't played Arkham Asylum since it first came out, as I had it on the 360.

...on the subject of Arkham Asylum, I thought that Harley Quinn was quite a good villain as well; she was an excellent counterpoint to the Joker...but then, she always has been. xD

It's a quote from Eternal Darkness; one of the Black Guardians says it. For some reason I had the game in mind whilst I made the thread...

Alvis from Fire Emblem Genealogy of the Holy War fits the "love to hate" bit pretty well.
Immense spoilers for the first half of Fire Emblem 4 ahead:
Spoiler:
So this guy is the advisor to the king of the kingdom Grandbell in which the main character, Sigurd, lives as the son of Lord Byron therefore he is the prince of Chalphy, one day an attack is launched on Chalphy while the majority of it's troops are off fighting in a war between Grandbell and Isaac, he wins and conquers Evans castle and is stationed there for a while, until they get attacked again, in this following skirmish Sigurd meets a woman named Deirdre and they fall in love, few years later they're married and have a kid named Celice, but then something goes wrong while Sigurd is off fighting again Deirdre gets kidnapped. Slightly later Prince Kurth, the heir to the Grandbellian throne gets murdered, and Sigurd's father, Lord Byron, get's blamed as well as Sigurd himself, he is then chased away and takes refuge in the neighbouring kingdom of Sylesia until he returns a year later to take down Langbart and Reptor the two who framed him and his father, during this battle he gets some bad news: his sister and her husband came to help him out but were attacked and murdered on their way while in the desert, so at the end they get to Alvis's sister who says Alvis knows their innocent everything looks to end happily until... Alvis suddenly sentences Sigurd to death, but just before killing him and a big part of your army, he decides to put some salt in the wound by showing you his new wife, the daughter of prince Kurth, and who comes out? Deirdre, the same Deirdre that was kidnapped years ago, how? She's been brainwashed and lost all her memories of before she got kidnapped, that's right just before putting an end to his life Alvis tells Sigurd that his (Sigurds) wife is now his (Alvis's) wife before burning him alive, and letting a meteor shower fall on his entire army. Maybe that isn't that much, the thing is it gets foreshadowed quite a bit and is revealed in cutscenes that Alvis is the Descendant of Lopt, the god of evil, and by marrying Deirdre and having a kid with her they can revive Lopt.
Now 17 years after this massacre, you're following Sigurd son, Celice, in an age where the Kingdom of Grandbell has become an empire spanning the entire continent ruled by the one and only Emperor Alvis, as Celice and the kids of Sigurd's troops as you try to liberate the world.
If that ain't some build up to a villain I don't know what possibly is.
I don't know what to put here, not allowed to post gifs, not even by putting it in a spoiler, so have some empty space:
...yay...?
