Starting today, many people who are using Windows 7 or 8.1 computers should start seeing a funny icon in the notification area of their taskbars. Specifically, yet another Windows icon.

That's the upgrade reservation for Windows 10, and you'll have to reserve it, whatever it means, to apparently guarantee that you'll get it no matter what happens.

I haven't seen it appear on my laptop, but they sure showed up in my parents' laptops, though. What about you guys?

Refer to this Windows blog post for more information.

It's a preview for a reason.

Still, surprisingly early release for what's still really in a pre-release state.

It's too early, in my opinion. Maybe they should give it more thought and time so that people could actually really decide if they want to or not, without the annoyance from Microsoft.

I noticed this pop up on my desktop last night, I had wondered what was up about it although I hadn't done anything with it yet. o,o I'm still undecided as to whether or not I'll actually use Windows 10, but why not, I'll go and click this.

Yea, I did.
Dunno if I use it as main system or do a dual boot...
I don't want to lose W7...
On the other hand, I might go for upgrade to my 8.1.

Since reserving a copy seems to necessitate actually using Windows 10 from that point on, I'll reserve my judgement instead. As a subscription-based service, it won't remain free indefinitely. I'd like to read the EULA in full if anyone knows where it might be freely read. In any case what I have found is concerning. Unfortunately they won't, but everyone considering Windows 10 really should read and understand it.

Nothing showed up yet, and if upgrading an operating system removes your currently saved files... I'd rather wait until my current laptop dies on me than go through the hassle of an upgrade- especially with the fact this piece of junk is over 5 years old and some of the keys act as if they're stuck sometimes. Despite being cleaned.
What would I like to see in the future? A few things, actually.
1) A trio of ROM hacks [gen1, gen2, gen3] that, aside from the generation, are pretty much identical: You start in Kanto and post-elite four you travel through Johto as it would have been "3 years ago".
2) A demake of Heart Gold / Soul Silver. Possibly using Fire Red as a base.
3) An official Pokémon game, following the standard "gotta catch 'em all" format, but aimed more at the older players.

I just noticed it on my laptop this morning, but I haven't clicked on it yet. I still haven't done enough research into Windows 10, so I think I'm going to hold off until I know more about it. As it is, I don't have as much of a problem with Windows 8/8.1 as some others apparently do (granted, I still preferred XP to it, and I probably would've preferred 7 if I had it), but it's not like I'm in a big rush to switch over.

I've been using 10 64bit for a month or so with no problems at all aside from it not recognizing all 24GB of my RAM. I just think it's funny, we're already seeing the standard "This windows sucks" posts and it's still in preview. :P

I saw the Windows icon just now, and I've been decided to reserve the update for Windows 10 just now. The update and the features sure looks promising for me to do so.

Well, I'll most definitely run the update once I can repair Windows Update. I did all sorts of scans and apparently something corrupted.

I panicked because I thought my computer wasn't compatible since the icon didn't show up. Turns out my computer never did the update for it :P

I reserved it this morning, looking forward to it honestly!

You can never lose your Windows 7 licence with any Windows upgrade, really. If you don't like a later version, you're free to go back to a previous version. Just remember that you aren't supposed to dual-boot upgrade Windows copies.

Since reserving a copy seems to necessitate actually using Windows 10 from that point on, I'll reserve my judgement instead. As a subscription-based service, it won't remain free indefinitely. You're possibly looking at the worst possible source. Keep in mind that Windows 10 preview is pre-release software and the "keylogger" isn't even really a keylogger. Just remember that as a beta tester, some things are expected to be given up, but your PID should be safe.

Also, Windows 10 won't be a subscription. Full stop. Upgrading has worked in the exact same way as it did in the past, and the software will be sold in the exact same way as past Windows versions. It's just that this time around, the upgrade offer costs $0 instead of some heavily-discounted price. (This piece of misinformation seems to have been spread a lot.)

Yeah I definitely reserved it. It's about time I lose the nightmare that is Windows 8.

Also if you're having trouble with getting the icon to pop up even after updating everything check this out:

That'll allow you to force the icon to appear it's what I had to do.

Either that, or run Windows Update. :P

Anyways, the icon did finally appear for me after several reboots to get Windows Update working again, and I have now since reserved my copy.

What is the purpose of reserving an upgrade of a piece of software? It's not like physical objects where there's some limited quantity, they can just keep on making copies.
Well reserving it now would mean that in the event of a pricing change or something like that, you'd still get it. At least I couldn't imagine any other use for it.

I'm seriously struggling to imagine what pricing change or something like it would be able to change their claim of "To take advantage of this free offer, you must upgrade to Windows 10 within one year of availability." from here as well as all over the internet. backing away from that policy would be catastrophic for Microsoft's efforts to try to get everyone on board and would generate tons of bad press, so I simply don't believe that reserving it would have any effect whatsoever. With that being said, I have gone through the reserving process, if not for anything else than getting e-mail updates on how the process is coming along.

A commenter on Ars Technica had a great point on a possible reason for this icon in the systray
"[why they do it?] So that they can get developers on board by saying "x million people have reserved their upgrade to Windows 10, so get your apps ready!"

Also to give people time to address any compatibility issues (the application runs a compatibility check.)"

Well Microsoft has drastically changed their minds in the past, so I wouldn't put it past them. That said you're likely right, it's probably just a way for them to predict their install-base while also having numbers to show devs.

Haven't gotten it yet, and I should get it pretty soon. I'm pretty interested in it, actually.

I'll also check my desktop when I'm in Caifornia later today though. It was recently upgraded to 8.1.
