On Wednesday, CBS aired the first episode of their new series The Briefcase. The show follows struggling American families who are suddenly given $101,000 and a choice: They can either keep the money or give some or all of it to another needy family.

I think that the concept of this show is sick. It does not help the war on poverty, it is demoralizing. What are your thoughts?

i watched the show, and i thought the first episode was good because both families got the total amount of money. what happens when one family gives away the money and that the other family keeps it. are they gonna get 200k and the other family gets nothing? i understand the idea of giving needy families money, but i don't think this is the right way of going about it.

I haven't heard of this show until now, but at first glance, it's certainly a disturbing premise. Once again putting those in poverty under the microscope for ratings. A quick skimming of articles dedicated to criticising the show give the basic idea that it's about teasing poor people with the promise of wealth, then guilting them for the rest of the runtime. The poor are teased with the possibility of financial help that they desperately need and then, if by some providence they are selected to receive the 'gift', they have to deal with how the money is used. The show then proceeds to indirectly shame them for whatever path they choose.

The voyeurism in play here is unbelievably cruel.
