how do you handle yourself in "awkward" situations? if you're like me, you've realized that awkwardness isn't actually a real thing and if everyone would just try harder to say clever things in moments of silence nobody would ever be uncomfortable again. if you're not like me, well, that's the point of this thread. maybe we'll all learn something new.

If you don't think awkward exists, then I want to know what I'm supposed to say when someone tells me their dog of fifteen years just died this morning from being hit by a car. I enjoy talking to people while I make their coffee, but I just don't know how to respond to some things.

it doesn't have to be an uncomfortable moment - just tell them you're sorry to hear that.

I'll be sayin', "Well, this is awkward." But, seriously, that's what I say. Then they laugh and such.

In awkward situations I tend to find the best thing to do is almost always to make someone laugh.

I just laugh or move onto another topic of conversation. No point stewing on the silence. Or even better, embrace what they said and make a joke of it - laugh. Of course if its not too out there or is a matter that could be laughed about. Don't filter yourself - it's the thing that creates awkwardness; at least for me.

I used to be a Super Awkward Guy but now it's just like... people are way more concerned about how I'm perceiving them than vice versa, so why the Psyduck should I worry about how I'm being perceived if they aren't really paying attention? that was kinda jumbled, hopefully it made sense. regardless when I'm talking to some people I forget how to speak so I say/do stupid things but I'm pretty sure that's universal. I try to dispel the awkwardness by changing the subject or ending the conversation if it's really bad.

I've always been extremely awkward in most situations. My brain is wired differently, so it's not easy to just come up with a good enough response to someone, especially when your social skills are somewhat shot to hell at times as well.

Dave you sound like a bit of a tit there. Awkwardness is a very real part of social situations and how to handle them totally depends on why the situation is awkward. If someone tried to "say something clever" when I'd just dropped some bad news for example I'd sooner smack them than "learn something new" from them. Not having a smart comment to everything is fine, and is often a much more appropriate solution.

...also if you come to England EVER you'll realise that awkwardness is not only real but mandatory.

Try to make a joke, fail horribly, ruin a friendship with poorly timed joke. Or just stay quiet. I got broke up with twice because I was always so awkward and preferred to stay quiet over say something stupid. It is what it is. I've been working to get out of my comfort zone though.
