So here are some questions that I want to ask some of you with rom hacking experience:

1. Is rom hacking possible without ever using A-map?
2. What kinds of rom modification do you guys usually find useful? (e.g. JPan's Hack Engine, rom bases, etc.)
3. How do you start a rom hack? Do you wipe out the entire map(all scripts, sprites, and tiles) and start from scratch?

Thank you for your answers.

Most definitely, though even the most adamant of hex hackers hardly go without it. Map editing is that thing that intuitively makes a lot more sense in an editor.

Without a doubt, modifications that you implement yourself. Those are ones you can be proud of :p

It's hard to say my hack has any one starting point. I kind of just let it flow out into my tools, and keep a journal of the canon that's a few paces ahead of what I've implemented in my game, and... everything rolls together. I dunno. It's quite natural, though. As far as bases go, I usually always use a vanilla Nintendo ROM and apply necessary patches to it.
