Well, as you might know... the internet is quite dangerous.

Not only identity thefts or phishing, but also stalkers. o.o;

How much do *you* trust the internet? Do you give out personal info? Have you ever done a Yahoo or Google search and gotten your address onthe front page? o.o;

Well, here's to debate about the dangers of the internet, so I don't think that it should go into Computers disscussion.... o.o;

I give out my full name at times, like on my Xanga, and my Myspace. Not when I signup with other kinds of websites, I use a fake name. I have searched google and found my address or phone number, one of them, and I requested for it to be taken off. I usually trust the internet, unless the website look suspicious.

o_o Well, I've had an "issue" with a stalker. =P I once mentioned a hint of my last name at the old PC and she randomly PMed me with my last name in the title since she'd decided to do a bit of digging one day. XD

But... I really do think I should be more careful. <_< Sometimes I do think I give out too much info over the internet, but I guess I just have those whole cloud around me where I feel that I'm either too insignificant for anyone to bother stalking or whatever or else I think nothing bad will come of it.

;_; Although I did get fairly paranoid when Alakazam (an old admin here at PC) figured out roughly where I lived. Then he got mad at me one day for closing a thread he wanted open and I swear... for a week I was sure he was going to show up at my doorstep or something seeking revenge. o__O;

Aye, I trust it. Why not? I won't give a crap if some stalker killed me anyways. It's worth the fun. So onto the subject. I don't give out mah personal info, one bacuse I'm scared mah parent swill find out and ban me from the computer, and because I hate it. I completely despise mah name and age, looks and all that. If those things weren't there, imagine what I'd be like right now..

Well, since I'm not that famous in real life, I don't show up on Google or Yahoo. =p

'Cept for my xanga site. o.o;

It's pretty easy to find out where a person lives though, once you have their first and last name... o.o;

I was raised using the Internet, but I am quite concerned over how easy it is to transer information over the Internet, and not to mention how easy it can be to intercept such info. I don't fully trust the Internet, it is scary how easily you can type in the wrong URL by accident and end up at some wierd site that transfers viruses and spyware.

I am not gotten to the point that , you search on google for my last name , and pictures of me will appear. Its so-so to find info about me even though i sometimes give it away.

In fact my nick stands for a new band , called MevsTheMonster (mvtm) , so youll info of them instead of me.

hmm but yes, in internet nothing is hide...
Where theres an IP,Mask or Host ... People can find even your phone , and its not that hard.

I havent had problems.

If someone bothered to stalk me Id have to wonder what compelled them to do so. Im not going to be exciting to watch by any stretch of the imagination. Like as once was said in a Garfield comic, 'You're a slug with hair'. XD

Well....*shifty eyes* XD
It was kinda random that I started using the net a lot...but I wasn't really aware that it could be dangerous, because I didn't use it a lot before. I mean when I was 6, those TV shows would say stuff like "Ask your parents to log on to www.pbskids.org! and remember, don't tell your name online!" XD
But when I started posting in places, I pretty much used my first name, and I didn't think it was a problem...
...then my parents found out I wasn't talking to people I knew XD;; I mean I reassure them that I'm not giving away personal info and all...But certain people found out my address, God knows how (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE XD)
Here's the way I see it: If someone thinks that the internet is filled with stalkers and that's all there is to it, you're calling yourself a stalker, and your friend who uses the internet a stalker, etc. if you know what I mean o.o;; Not everyone who uses the internet is a bad person, and I wish people would understand. Now don't get me wrong, of course you should still be careful! ^^;;

I've typed my name in Google (and your name too Erica...umm...I was bored?) nothing came up. But I'm not all that trusting of the internet, no. Nor am I all that trusting in real life for that matter.

At first I was really uncomfortable with even saying I was Canadian; but when people thought I was British because of my spelling I felt the need to correct them. Not all that comfortable with my name going out either. One online person has it, but I never actually told her...I Just kinda told her that it was right in front of her. :/

Even how I am now, I think I should try to be even more protected. O_o

I googled my name and came up with about 2,500 results. I wasn't going to go through every one to see if one was actually about me XD.

The internet is just like real life really. Most people there are normal and sane, but you always get the occasional crazy stalker/mass murderer...XD. In real life you only give your address or phone number to some one you actually trust with it, I do the same online too. I'm a big boy anyway, if a stalker does track me down, I've got a baseball bat that'll make them wish they never bothered XD.

If you have a good firewall, and have enough common sense not to give out your phone number/address, then the internet can't touch you. If you're stupid enough to give out your address, then you only deserve what's coming to you. My parents are fine with me talking to people that I don't know... as long as I don't arrange to meet up or anything, they're perfectly fine.

Oh, my parents generally have no problem with what I do on the internet. They know I visit a lot of forums and they know I have an abundance of online friends and acquaintances. They're... fairly active on the internet too. They've got online friends themsevles, most of whom live in the states. We visit them every summer, so again, they're pretty cool like that.

My mom is kind of strict in some respects, though. Like... I'm not allowed on the internet, or even on the computer after 10 PM at night since that's when all the bad people get on. XD; Plus, I'm not allowed to give out my real name on the internet, or the typical stuff like where I live, etc.

My parents have also let me meet one of my online friends. ^_^ And call them on the phone~ I met a person from TPM (a fellow FA moderator at the time <3) one year, although I don't talk to her anymore. ;_; And then for my birthday my dad let me place a long distance call to my friend in Texas. :D So... if ever any of you guys end up in Toronto, lemme know and I'm sure I'll be allowed to meet you. XD

Oh, once I remember Zapchu saying that she had her personal information listed under her domain name and a fan of her website called her house one day and scared her senseless. XD XD

Yup, you could find all sorts of info if that person has a domain... *whistles innocently*

As for myself, one time I typed my name on Yahoo/Google, and it came up with my Xanga site on the 1st page. o.o; And on it is my citty, and my school, and if you know what city I live in, you could find my school, and you could even search around my xanga for my scedule...O.o;

... I doubt that anyone would want to do that though. <<; but it *is* possible. o.o;

My parents know that I'm on forums and such too. For the first forums I went too I was going on in secret for the first few weeks. It was addicting and naturally my computer activity increased rapidly. So my mom questioned me. She wasn't 100% for it, but said she'd let me since it was an official Nintendo forum and the mods work at Nintendo. So if something goes wrong they can get fired or something, so they'd always be on the lookout. Lol

I never told them specifically about PC for a while. All I ever said was "I'm at the same forum as Erica", which they took as Erica joined where I was. After I was modded I decided to explain myself. They seem alright and they trust me (not 100% though of course). I just don't trust myself. I abide by their rules, which I fully support, and added my own. I'm perfectly fine how I am. I have no intentions of making friends or meeting anyone. I'm so antisocial.

Wow, a lot of your parents are strict. My parents don't have any idea what I do on the computer. Reason being is that they have no idea about computers, internet, and so on. My dad knows he can send email, but that's all.
I trust the internet enough to give some things, but not anything that gives away my location unless it's a trusted site. I really see no reason for this being in the T-Dome, but this is just my opinion.

Id say its in the TDome because it crosses into ethics, which can be a fairly mature subject at times. And I just Googled my name and came up with 8,070,000 results, if Im in one of those 8,070,000 results and someone could be actually bothered to find me and stalk me then Id have to be impressed by their persistance to say the least. XD

Do it in quotation marks, Dawson, and try again.
"[your first name] [your last name]"

Without the your first name and brackets, of course. X3

Well, I'm surprised at my trusting self, giving I'm rather paranoid. At first I was reluctant to give out my age, but I didn't mind telling people I lived in Australia. I gave hints I suppose but I haven't told one soul online my real name. Kylie is just a nickname my friend Rudy gave me last year that I adopted and now most people do call me that.
I am aware of stalkers and things but look at it in perspective. When I saw my psychologist last year she told me something that helps me get things in perspective and calm down. I'll paraphrase it because it had to do with my bacillaphobia [at the time, of avian influenza] not net stalkers. ;P And it was ages ago. So my memory... ish.
"If a hundred or so children are tracked down by stalkers on the net each year, doesn't mean that kid will be you. And for the hundred that do get tracked down and you hear it on the news... Well, the news don't report about all the kids that safely use the net. I mean, it's not entirely newsworthy. So for all the hundred that do get tracked down and abused, etc., millions use it safely."
So all I do is be careful about who I do disclose my information to, and don't disclose some of it, such as even the initial of my real first name, at all. ^_^ I don't put my name in Neopets forms, xangas, etc., either. I put fake info in or not at all. =P Like "Random Random at 123 Random Street, Randomsville, NSW, Australia." XP
Also, the main reason I occasionally do get concerned is because I don't want one of my friends turning up on my doorstep and my parents finding out just what I do do on the net. [My net life ish a secret.]

I don't ever give out really personal information. x_X For all you guys know...I might be 24 instead of 15. XD I don't trust the internet at all. Like that online dating stuff? That's like, posting a want ad for someone to come and molest you. O.O;;

Now, I might just be uber paranoid, but I feel even if you really trust someone, even at PC, never give out real information. Making an online friend and giving them all information about you isn't worth it if it puts you in any mortal danger. X_x;;

Like many of you, my parents don't want me giving away my age/location/name. >>;

I'm pretty paranoid myself though, so, no worries ^^ Although, my 1up account shouts out my personal info to the world, so if you know what username I use there, you know all xD >>; Scary.

*googles his name*

Lots of people with my name, but no me! YAY! lol
