Video game villains come in a lot of different types, shapes and sizes. Some of them are just pure evil, while others have a few more layers to their personality that make you love and hate them, and have interesting backstories that are fun to learn about as you progress through the game.

So what kind of qualities, in your opinion, makes a villain a 'good' villain? Do you have a favorite villain? What do you like most about them?

I don't think I look for anything in villains as long as they're unique in some way. I enjoy villains that you love to hate, but I also enjoy villains that aren't so crazy. I think my favorite villain at the moment is King Gaius from Tales of Xillia.

Spoiler:
I don't know if he even counts as a villain per se, but your party and Gaius are fighting for their own ideals. Jude struggles with having to fight someone he has so much respect for and even Gaius asks him if he'll be able to stand and fight against him if it comes to it. Ultimately, he does lose to the main party, but they still extend their hand towards him to move on to the future of their world together which I think is really great.

I also really like Veger from Jak 3. He kind of came out of no where, but at the same time, he's technically been there from the beginning because he kidnapped Jak at a young age. And yeah, he's a huge asshole, but I think the worst thing is:

Spoiler:
Not telling Jak that his father was Damas until he had already died right in front of him.

For the most part, I enjoy villains more like Gaius that aren't entirely villains per se, but I do appreciate the typical evil butt wipe if they're done well enough.
