Been having trouble with my laptop the past 2-3 days. When I first tried to get connected to a conference call, my Wi-Fi shut down, there was no networks to connect to; it also seemed like it was frozen, my computer showed it was 4:59pm but it was 5:06pm, though I was able to move my mouse around (albit very laggy).

Wi-Fi came back but I ended up getting a blue screen yayy, it then failed to start up, started a backup option it gave me, at 97% it quit and said it couldn't complete due to space I think. Tried restoring to an earlier point but it said their was none. So I chose to just start it up, it worked wifi and all, though that didn't last long, ran spybot (found something in the reg keys), Norton (tracking cookies), ad-aware, but it got to a blue screen again before that finished. Never let Norton finish either BC I didn't want it on all night.

What is going on? I had the WiFi/blue screen trouble before and it stopped by itself.

Already had to replace the hard drive due to a earlier blue screen, also the fan once, and the screen, my display cable is loose, the built in cam and mic is broke, the headphone jack is needed up,I'm just getting tired of this thing.

I'd hate to say this, but based on all of the conditions you described, it might be time for a new laptop. I'd imagine that the cost of getting everything that's broken replaced would be more cost-consuming than just purchasing a new laptop altogether.

While we're at it, might be good to specify a probable budget and what you need the most. A $1000 laptop is very nice, or you could get a $800 desktop and a $200 cheap laptop if you don't already have a desktop and don't need to have all the power with you at all times. The minimum I'd spend on a laptop if it's going to be the only PC you have is $500, by the way, for standard laptops.

Thats what I figured, but I don't really have the money.

The headphone jack works, but sometimes if the headphones are plugged out/in the sound cuts out. Display cable I can probably DIY (its just loose) but it not a huge deal. No Cam/Mic is livable, they broke back when I got screen fixed, so possibly just loose.

Just like to get the rest I can out of this one hopefully. We have a desktop but I hardly use it so I 'need' something I can use for smaller games, Minecraft, lots of tabs, occasional photoshop work. I have a HP Pavilion dv7 now, could stay with the pavilion though I think they might have gotten weaker since the envy line came out. HP's fan issues are annoying, but I like the look of them, haha.

Hmm, next time around, may I suggest not going HP? They seem to have elevated failure rates, last I checked.

Is there any way of knowing what is failing or causing the Bsod before they fail? I did a hard drive scan, pretty sure that means good, but I don't know at all.

Any recommendations then? I can tell they fail a lot it seems. I really like the look of HP. My first and previous one was a Toshiba, never going that way again.

Looks like the HDD's good, so I'm putting bets on the laptop itself having failing hardware that isn't easy to replace.

Budget? Where are you going to buy the new laptop from? What do you plan to use it for? Do you already have a desktop, and if so, what's the exact desktop, and what's inside it?

Thirding the non-HP route. And stay away from Compaq by all means as well (they're actually worse than HPs).

I have a Toshiba laptop (albeit it was worth $749.99 at the time I got it back in early 2014), and it's still running very fine to this day, even with heavy everyday use.

I though staying away from Compaq didn't need saying.. hehe. It could because since the Toshiba was my first it was on $200-$300.

- No budget atm, but I prefer not to go $1000+, probably more around $500-$800 if I saved up money, because I don't think there is any for $100 lol.
- Where-ever its available, online I guess is most likely.
- I use my laptop as almost stationary. Web browing, like 20 tabs, youtube, minecraft, photoshop graphics, sometimes some steam games (nothing major though, keep that to desktop), sketchup, sometimes video watching. i would prefer to keep a cd drive, but thats partly because I like a little thickness for more battery, and stablity.
- We have a family desktop but I hardly use it, mainly cause its always in use, but I'm able to get it sometimes for gaming. Not sure exactly what it is. HP Pavilion AMD A10-5700 APU w/ Radeon 3.40GHz, 8GB RAM 64bit.

Any way to know which hardware is causing the problem? Due to the lack of my fan acting up I think it may be that. Cheap enough repair to hold it over if I DIY, though I heard it would take about 4hrs and taking it all apart.

Might as well as look for something in here. There's bound to be something for you. You can always get the $189 netbook if you plan to build a desktop for yourself; if not, get something that just runs right up the budget limit.

Many other stores should also sell laptops. Try to check out the stuff in your specified pricing range, too. If you were asking me, just give me the laptops you're interested in and I'll leave comments on them.

Though if you have other miscellaneous hardware failures It may indeed be an OK time to see if you can invest in a budget laptop that you can somewhat upgrade as funds allow.

Well first thing's first I have to say if the wifi connects but doesn't connect to the internet then: SUSPECT BAD VIRUS
If the Wifi just won't connect at all: SUSPECT BAD WIFI DRIVER/NETWORKING CONFIGURATION, may be caused by previous virus infections
If the computer doesn't even SEE that it has a Wifi adapter then: SUSPECT BAD WIFI CARD
If the problems only occur when you fill the RAM up (See task manager performance tab) then: SUSPECT BAD RAM MODULE

Something that creaky might be something that is better to be replaced than repaired :)

... Compaq is a sub-brand of HP at present, guys, and has been for 10 years.

RAM replacement might be worth a shot with the current machine to get more life out of it. But that's gonna be something like another $100 to $200 when you can just gather up a bit more and replace it with either your own custom-built desktop or another halfway decent laptop.

Also, cleaning the existing machine on both the OS side and the physical side.
