I dislike mobile gaming. If I want to pick up and play a game at any time, I'll pick up a handheld; I'm really not into these mindless distractions like Angry Birds and all the rest of it. Mobile games don't cater properly to my tastes: I like complex JRPGs with in-depth battle systems, engaging storylines, and 50+ hours of gameplay, or at least something a little more complicated than just "tap the screen"...and when I'm not in the mood for that and I want a distraction, my handhelds have me covered with things like Theatrhythm. Mobile games, by and large, lack any kind of depth, and those that do have depth can't even come close to competing with console or handheld titles, so there is no appeal whatsoever for me. I wouldn't say it's necessarily a bad thing, but like all markets, it can't cater for everyone, and I happen to be in the group that is excluded. Which is fine. I have other things to amuse me.
I'll confess my opinion of mobile gaming is a little bitter though, because companies like Square Enix are producing games by the bucketload for mobiles and neglecting consoles, or they're not doing them to the high standard I would expect going by their past titles. Maybe if they did I'd start to consider buying them. People are also raising up mobile gaming as the end of the handheld era - Sony are using that excuse for the Vita's performance, ignoring the fact that any low opinions of the Vita are due to them refusing to make games for it; mobile gaming has NOTHING to do with it - in the same way as they're raising PC gaming up as the end of the console era, and I'm sick of hearing about it. It's bollocks; the markets are totally different, and the rise of one does not necessarily mean the fall of another, and the sales tell a different story entirely.
tl;dr mobile gaming just isn't for me, so I don't go near it. Simple as that. I also don't have a good enough phone (although I do have an iPod touch) and I don't really want to waste my money on one.
