Well, we have all kinds of genre out there since anime is such an all-encompassing medium. But there's something about this genre that makes it slightly different from other genres. I've observed a lot of my anime-watching friends just skip shows altogether just because they belonged to some sports series or the other. Maybe they just prefer watching those sports irl, maybe they just dislike the genre in general (not limited to their dislike for the genre in just anime medium). Whatever be the case, I've observed irl that this genre, more than any other genre apart from, say, SoL, makes people run away from anime belonging to them.

But yeah, with that out of the way, since this is a general sports anime thread, let's start off with some questions - What are your fave sports series? What appeal do they possess for you? And have you guys ever had a situation like I faced (as described in the aforementioned paragraph)? Let's talk sports animu!

haikyuu/slamdunk/yowapedal praise thread in disguise hehe

My fav is by far Baseball. It isn't even remotely popular in my country, but I love it. I'm a huge fan of Major.
Same applies for Basketball, but I haven't seen many shows (Slam Dunk and Kuroko so far).

I've recently been following Haikyuu, an anime about volleyball. Of course with most of these sports shows I don't participate myself but it is exciting to follow seeing an underdog team attempt to make it biog through tournaments. A lot of the characters are likable which is partly why I enjoy it.

I've heard of Major. But the series was too damn long so that kinda scared me off a bit. Is it really worth the 5-6 or so seasons' worth of investment? :p

Slam Dunk and Kuroko are both really good shows. For different reasons, but yeah. I'm glad you've seen them. To be frank, though, those are the only basketball shows I've seen too XD; I've seen bits and pieces of Dear Boys but that doesn't really count since I didn't watch enough of it.

What about other sports shows? Haikyuu!!? Initial D (this counts, I guess)? Cross Game? One Outs? If you haven't given the aforementioned a shot, I'd definitely recommend all of them. They're all really nice! Haikyuu, especially, is a gem. <3;

Boxing also counts so I'll throw these two names in here too - Hajime no Ippo and Amuka no Joe. Both are fantastic series which deal with things very differently but are definitely some of the best series I've had the pleasure of experiencing (reading in case of Amuka no Joe since the anime is super old). And I'm not just placing them high on my "sports anime I like list". They're up there with the heavy-weights from my all time fave anime of all time list. :3

How many times have I answered this topic with the same answer? =D
I have no idea who she is. XD; I'm assuming she's one of those characters from that chibi girl basketball anime whose clip I saw on youtube sometime? idk. XD;

I approve. ;) Haikyuu! definitely is an odd one. I NEVER would've thought I'd enjoy an anime based on volleyball THAT much. It has a lot to do with how well it is written and how well Production I.G animated that show (it looks gorgeous and fluid most of the times), I guess. Either way, really great show.

You following the second season? Second Season's going great so far! :D

What you can do if you're afraid of the number of seasons is try the first one. Most of them take place after a certain amount of time, so even though the characters are the same, the main "purpose" of the season is always different.

If I know you like I think I know your fav will be Season 5 lol

The old me would say my favorite sports anime is Kuroko no Basket, but now I'm all for Haikyuu. I mean, I still like Kuroko no Basket as well, but I'd say Haikyuu is better because I can actually recommend it to people who don't like sports.

KnB is great and all, but I was only really into it because I was already a fan of basketball, lmao. So the games were what drew me in. The show's funny sometimes and there are a few unique characters, but the cast as a whole isn't that special imo, so I was pretty much hella bored on weeks with no games. Granted, the episodes with games were crazy and I loved the hype, but yeah - KnB wasn't that consistent, and don't get me started on how it ended. Ugh.

But with Haikyuu, holy **** - literally everything about it is great. Character development, story, the volleyball games, you name it. Hell, I even like most of the characters.
I've gotten people who dislike sports anime to watch Haikyuu, and they love it, which speaks for itself. Haikyuu just has so much to offer.

I usually don't gravitate towards any specific genre but three out of four of the sports anime/manga I've watched/read have been good. Probably because I avoid the ones that I hear have characters with 'special abilities' and junk like that. Haikyuu, Baby Steps and Ping Pong have all been very enjoyable but I'm not interested in the genre tbh. Just interested in these ones because they have the content that got me hooked.

I tried Yowamushi Pedal, got pretty far, I dropped it not long after because it wasn't very good. I gave it a second chance at some point but it was even worse since I had other sports stuff to compare it to at that point in time.

So yeah, I don't really have any special feelings toward the genre. It won't ever impact whether I do or don't watch something.

I love sports anime even though my list isn't that big compared to some others. I've seen Kuroko no Basket, Oofuri, Free! (if that.. even counts..), and recently Haikyuu!! which I'm currently obsessed with. I love the character progression and comedy that these series tend to provide, especially in Kuroko and Haikyuu.

Kuroko was awesome for the exaggerated basketball moves which may as well have put it in the fantasy genre lmao. None of it made sense but it was hilarious to watch. Haikyuu has fantastic art and the comedy is the best out of any sports series I've seen. They just have really awesome characters that I get attached to even if I'm not big on sports. akashi from kuroko <3 kageyama from haikyuu <3 yup
