So, well, I was looking at this recently announced figurine of Nakiri Erina from Shokugeki no Soma:

"That is, indeed, where you belong, peasants. Bow before thy queen!" - Nakiri Erina-sama.

And I totally went "Niiiice. If I had the cash, I'd totally have bought it." and then my roommates gave me a weird look. :p Like, their reasoning is that figurines, ultimately, do not do much apart from sitting on your shelf and looking pretty. And spending ~$100 on something that doesn't serve much of a purpose apart from just looking pretty isn't something justifiable as far as their opinions are concerned. Fair enough, I suppose. Even I don't think I can justify it properly with a logical counter-argument to it, to be completely honest.

So, what are your opinions on these pretty things? Do you think they're an utter waste of money? Money well spent? Or waste of money but you'd still rather buy them than not? :p Also, if you own one of these (or better yet, a collection!), feel free to show them off over here. :D

If you have the money to buy them and you want them then more power to you. It's not my choice how someone spends the money they earned themselves.

They do look nice though, if I had cash I was willing to spare I might buy a Mio or Erina one but on the other hand, I'd rather move out before I buy stuff that my parents will question me about.

I think they're a generally irresponsible use of money if you don't have much to begin with, but they hold their value extremely well if you take care of them and are of a popular character from a popular series (see the prices of figurines of Mio, Yui, Ritsu, Mugi, and Azusa from K-On!, a series where the last anime release was a movie, and the last things published were games in 2013 and 2014; alternatively, see the prices of figurines from any Haruhi Suzumiya character), so they're a good investment if you know how to take care of them and don't open the box.

As an admittedly easily hooked collector, I was easily roped in by the elements that appeal to the collector in me, like complete sets and having them all.

That said, I have... 25 or 30, I think? Maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less. 10 of those are Petit Nedoroids from the same Love Live! set of Petit Nendos, and another 9 are Petit Nendos bundled with the 3 versions of Love Live! School Idol Paradise for the PS Vita. I've also got a Miku one from Project DIVA Arcade, a Yuki Nagato Nendo, a Haruhi Suzumiya Nendo, a Himeko Inaba Max Factory figurine, a Revolotech Gurren Lagann figure of, well, Gurren Lagann, a Phat twin pack of Yozora Mikaduki & Sena Kashiwazaki, a Misaka Mikoto yukata one, a Kuroko Shirai yukata one, the Madoka Kaname White Dress Version from the Beginnings Movie, a S.H. Figurarts Nico Yazawa in her Bokura wa Ima no Naka de MV outfit, and a Nico Yazawa First Fan Book Version. And there's like 4 or 5 that I can't recall because I picked them up in a local anime store so they don't show up anywhere in my order histories. I think one of them is a "normal" Shirai Kuroko Nendo (with a panty-hat for her in the box). So, I guess 30 was on the low end.

I've also got several more either on their way or pre-ordered.

On their way: Santa outfit Yui Hirasawa.

Pre-ordered: Nendoroid Petite: Love Live! Angelic Angel Ver. (10 in this set; February 2016), Nendoroid Kotori Minami: Training Outfit Ver. (January 2016), Love Live! Nico Yazawa Picnic Girl Ver 1/8 Scale (April 2016), Himouto! Umaru-chan Umaru Nendoroid (February 2016), Nendoroid Renge Miyauchi (April 2016), Nendoroid Non Non Biyori Repeat Hotaru Ichijo (April 2016), and the Himouto! Umaru-chan Trading Figures Set (8 random figures; February 2016).

That makes for another... 24(!) figurines either on their way or pre-ordered. Granted, the bulk of those come from mini-figurines as do the bulk in the ones I actually already have. HOLY HELL I JUST REALIZED I'LL HAVE AT LEAST 50 COME FEBRUARY. My spent total is still probably between $1000 and $1300 is all, though.

These also don't include my POKEMON ones, of which I have 30 or 40 as well. I think, anyway. Most of those are mini-figurines from TCG tins and boxes.

Anyway, to summarize: not the most responsible use of money, but I've got quite a number of them myself, whoops.

No pics because I don't feel like digging through my Imgur account's images tonight to post them.

You get your waifus in physical form!
Who wouldn't want that?!

I don't buy that many figs, usually only on cons.
I prefer Nends to figmas because cute things should be cuter xD
I have Nends of Miku (classical version), Madoka, Chrome Dokuro, bigger Nends of Black Rock Shooter and Azu-nyan and whole pack of K-On Nends =D

I would want some RabuRaibu Nends (may pick up them with their Vita games) and Tomoka.

I just counted. I currently have 29 figurines and most of my main waifus are accounted for (Serena from Pokemon, Sailor Mercury, Saki from Natsuiro Kiseki, Yui and Azusa from K-on!, Cure White from Pretty Cure, and a number of others.) I don't care about the collector/investment factor, I have them on display as display pieces. Home decor, you might say.

I get my hands on them any way I can, at cons or online, but I typically don't spend more than $30 or $40 for one unless it's an absolute must-have, and I've found some really good ones at surprisingly reasonable prices.

Honestly, it's my money, I choose to spend it on home decor pieces that just so happen to resemble my waifus.

I mean, it's easier to convince more "normal" anime fans to buy them if you tell them it's an opportunity to decorate your place with all of their best girls/boys rather than their waifus/husbandos. I mean, I pretty much treat it as an opportunity to have the best characters decorating my shelves/occupying space in boxes.

Nendos are typically cheaper is the biggest reason I have more of them, really. Personally, I prefer the insanely well-crafted ones that park in pretty high price ranges.

The Vita games with the Nendos included would probably run you at least $150 for all 3, maybe more depending on where you buy and what prices are like where you are. It'd probably just be cheaper to get one of their non-game box sets of Nendo Petites, but then you still wouldn't own the ones that come with the games.

That dollar cap is something I should probably implement for the sake of my wallet.

Then again, I remembered this was announced the other day and have been having a very hard time resisting pre-ordering it:
http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2015/10/28/alter-presents-love-live-school-idol-festival-nico-yazawa-figure

The biggest thing keeping my off of pre-ordering it now? The fact that it's $160 for a pre-order. I'll probably pre-order in January.

I love the idea of collecting anime figurines, but for now I'm mainly a 'window shopper' I suppose. I currently possess just two figures, both are Steins;Gate figmas (Kurisu & Okabe) which are relatively cheap. My birthday & christmas are coming up soon though so hopefully I will add a few figures to my collection.

If I'm still interested in them by the time I start earning money, I could see myself being a dedicated collector of the One Piece Portrait of Pirates series. They're a fairly reasonable price for the quality of the sculpts.

As for whether they're a waste of money, I don't think so personally. Whilst maybe it isn't doing much sitting on your shelf, it probably brings you some satisfaction for a long period of time and is fairly likely to retain its value. In the case of the P.O.P. series I mentioned, many of them rise a fair bit in value once they run out stock. It's the same as any collection really, a fun pastime with a regular payoff of satisfaction for the collector. Also if you're a dirty pirate like me, it's a good way to support a series without paying for astronomical DVD/BR prices.

Thanks God I'm obsessed with videogames, manga, books, light novels. But I always tried to stay away from this, because I knew I would practically lose all my money.
Does Gunpla count as figurine?

I'd love to buy figurines, and I definitely would under different circumstances...but as things stand, I don't have the money to spend or the space to put them. I have a few small figurines, but nothing ridiculously expensive or particularly big.

I'd rather have games and books, personally. You can't really do much with a figurine other than put it on a shelf and stare at it, or occasionally swap its pose perhaps. Figurines, for me, would be things I'd buy with any extra cash I had, not something I'd go out of my way to buy at the expense of something else.

Although I did spend £300 on a 6ft custom plushie five years ago which sits atop my wardrobe because I have nowhere else to put it

In my opinion, the figurines that one should be buying are those of the franchises that he/she loves the most in order for one to feel that the one bought was worth every single cent, but i guess most people already know that by now ;). The franchises and things i love and like are related to something such as Touhou, Fate, Persona, Pokemon (of course), Shin Megami Tensei, and League of Legends to name a few so i definitely save and spend for such figurines. I think its pretty much common sense to buy figurines that are related to franchises one really holds dear or as mentioned in some posts, are coming from popular franchises or series that the user also likes dearly such as street fighter, which is popular, well-known across the world, and a game series I still genuinely like.

The other great thing about collecting figurines is that they help remind some of us that there are things that existed as part of our own history, especially when it comes to some forgotten series or franchises. In a few years time, some may see a lovely figurine but do not remember where this lovely character came from.
