Kanto and Johto have had several remakes over the past decade. But when comparing the original games of the 2nd Generation to their remakes, which do you prefer? Is the nostalgia too much to ignore for you, as you prefer the original games? Or did the flashy, modernised remakes spark your interest more? Why?

If you had a choice to play only one game (either from the originals or the remakes) and no other from this generation, what type of game would you opt for?

This is an interesting topic. Both the classics and the remakes have their own charms. RGBY/RBY are the holy mother of our series, without them there would be no Pokemon, this is a fact not acting one-sided to the games I first began with. XD

While GSC have introduced a lot of things that affected the Pokemon gaming experience and mechanic deeply, from Pokemon genders to the player's gender, from day night cycle (it was kind of absent in RSE) to colored interface etc, etc.

Having said that, I prefer FRLG over their classic counterparts, the broken mechanics of Gen I really pushes me away. Try letting a Weepinbell use Stun Spore/Poison Powder and Wrap on you, see if you'll enjoy that, ha! The horrendous ost from FRLG though, ughh... Save my ears please.

It's almost a tie between HGSS and GSC, my vote goes to the classic ones instead. My main complains are the ost remix (there are a few good ones though), following feature.

One common flaw I've seen from the remakes is staying too true to their classic counterparts and FRLG is particularly worse on this. Hopefully this problem can be fixed in the future remakes of any games. :)

When it comes to R/B/Y and their remakes FR/LG, I don't think I ever played the remakes. So automatically, my choice goes to the original. As for G/S/C and their remakes HG/SS, I choose the originals for certain reasons. One such reason being better games in the Game Corner. The slots are superior to Voltorb Flip.

Can't decide honestly, since I liked the classics and the remakes.

Currently playing: The Ultimate Rodent Solo Run Challenge Marathon

Pokemon Silver Furret Run: (16/16) (JOHTO + KANTO + RED COMPLETED)
Pokemon Sapphire Linoone Run: (8/8) (COMPLETED)
Pokemon Pearl Bibarel Run: (2/8)
Pokemon White Watchog Run: (N/A)

I always liked remakes better, because there's improvements and as I know, improvements are good.

FR/LG may almost look like a copy-paste of the original Kanto games, but it does at least have Sevii Islands and ability to catch some 2nd Gen Pokemon to make it stand out a bit.

But it's HG/SS where the remakes got better, thanks to a sizable postgame and handy features, and there's also both Pokeathlon and walking Pokemon for a bit of entertainment as well. As Sun said, remakes tend to stay true to their nostalgic roots but at least the improving mechanics make them more enjoyable compared to their original versions.
Gone forever for personal reasons.

I like GSC remake because of the better graphic and walking with pokemon also several more post-game and interesting design and I like original too, but as for FRLG it's very lackluster on postgame and not much about it though
Post Sig coming soon.

I prefer RBY to their FR/LG counterparts. Possibly blinded by nostalgia a little, but there's a simplicity and a charm in the originals which was sadly lacking in the remakes.

GSC v HG/SS is a toughie. A real tough one. The originals are classics for sure, but the remakes succeeded where FR/LG failed and refined them. Plus, HeartGold got me back into the Pokemon Game after losing all interest for a lot of years. Call it a tie, maybe?

For me, in both cases, I am going to have to say I'd choose the remakes over the originals. While the originals were good for their time, they... don't exactly hold up very well. At least not to me.

FRLG is literally RB that functions well, and has more stuff in it. That's enough for me to choose it over Red and Blue. Also, despite them not having too much in them, I do like the Sevii Islands a lot.

HGSS is, once again, an update to GSC, and putting them on the level of Gen 4. It fleshed out Kanto a little bit more, it had more to do post-Elite 4, and the graphical style really appeals to me.

And I do kind of agree with Gobln, with the RBY hack with the Sevii Islands in it. If that were possible, I'd love to play it, just to see how the islands would look in it.
