I've recently started watching a lot of live actions and Japanese dramas that were adapted from anime and manga. Honestly after seeing things like DBZ and Avatar's adaptations in english I was a little bit scared to try an adaptation in Japanese. The other week I was invited by my friend to watch a marathon of Japanese drama and I really liked them (I watched Paradise Kiss, Kimi ni Todoke and Hana Yori Dango).

What do you guys think of Manga/Anime live adaptations? I know they have a terrible impression, but there's a lot of good ones out there!

Also wondering if anyone you have watched them, have any suggestions? Aside from those 3, I've seen Yamada Taro Monogatari, BECK, GANTZ + GANTZ Perfect Answer and have recently started the Gokusen series.

I tried Death Note once, and I didn't particularly like it. I don't like how mainstream Japanese actors act, it feels kinda awkward watching them D:

STEP ASIDE EVERYONE THIS IS MY AREA.

Yaay! Another new Jdrama fan!

Honestly, I love Jdramas and live actions just as much as (even more really) than anime. I absolutely love jdramas and live actions - even though as you said, a lot of people have a terrible impression of them. I think it's mostly because a lot of people have seen the original anime/ read the manga and are iffy when things go exactly the way it does in the original source. Half the reason I tend to watch the live action before I watch the anime/read the manga - in most cases I watch/read them reverse Live action -> anime -> manga (unless it's new an airing)

I definitely have seen all of the ones you have mentioned and I can definitely recommend you a few you might like.

Paradise Kiss, Kimi ni Todoke and Hana Yori Dango, Yamada Taro Monogatari, BECK, GANTZ + GANTZ Perfect Answer and have recently started the Gokusen series.
Definitely watch them if they're 11-13 episode dramas since they pace quite well in comparison to movies, but that doesn't mean there are also some good movies there.

Since you have lots of romance/ high school base ones:
If you liked Hana Yori Dango, definitely try Hana Kimi/ Hanazakari no Kimitachi. Legit haven't cried in any anime except 2-3 sports ones, and I bawled my eyes out at the end because it was finishingand was just really good. There's two versions 2007 and 2011, but most people prefer 2007. 2011 isn't bad, just the cast isn't as great as the original. Definitely has a lot of parts different from the manga, but didn't bother me much in the drama and I ended up liking it more.

THE GIRL WHO LEAPT THROUGH TIME/ TIME TRAVELER - This is soooooooooo so good. I did really like the anime, but I ended up liking this one soooooo muh more I cried with the unexpected ending. It's set with different characters and a different plot to the anime, but it carries the same theme of time travel. I recommend it to a friend who absolutely hated the original anime, but she ended up loving this. Definitely recommend it to anyone.

Yamada kun to 7 nin no Majo for if you want a supernatural + romance sort of thing/ I still prefer the drama way over the anime and It's pretty short for 8 episodes which is unusual, but it does the plot really well.

Kyou, Koi wo Hajimemasu I really liked as a simple movie if you want some "Shy teenage girl meets the most popular boy of school" and they fall in love. Apparently manga fans didn't like it, but a lot of the drama community who haven't read it really did love it.

For you loving GANTZ:
Mirai Nikki: Another World - I absolutely loved so much more than the anime/manga. Like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, it's a different cast and story to the original, but same concept of cellphone death games. It was a little hard to begin with since I was used to the characters from the anime, but the live has it's own twist and is somewhat more ... realistic...(?) I guess than the anime.

Parasyte - So I haven't watched it's live yet since I'm waiting for both movies to be out (it's only just come out with subs). Apparently the movies absolutely ruins want you've watched if you have seen the anime/manga, but is brilliant if you are watching it for the movie alone without any knowledge. So don't watch it if you've seen the original source.

Maou - it's not based of an anime/manga, but if you like the other ones above, this is a brilliant drama you should definitely watch!

Other really cool adaptation in general, Asuko March!, Bambino!, Kindaichi series + movies, Tantei Gakuen Q movie + series.

Can't really think of anymore at the top of my head, but once I remember I'll probably post again or something.

Thanks Zappy! Really loved some of the suggestions that you gave me! Gave Girl who leapt through time and Mirai Nikki which I ended up loving the original - especially Mirai Nikki even if it was a lot more realistic than the anime (honestly I was wondering what you meant by them turning Mirai Nikki being made more realistic) and I loved what they did to it.

Parasyte's live action is also amazing. Luckily you said not to watch the anime, because I haven't yet - Second part is out if you haven't seen it yet.

I also ended up watching Assassination Classroom's live action which was really awesome to watch.

I'm really excited since they've got some new stuff for the second movie! - That's the guy who was in GANTZ right?

I officially love this thread just because I was unaware that there were live action versions of Yamada-Kun and Assassination Classroom, and I know what I'm going to be watching soon!

Also didn't know there was ever a Paradise Kiss drama.. might have to check it out.

Hana Yori Dango and Hana Kimi were two of my first jdramas, and they kinda got me into them in general. I've seen the j-drama version of Hana Yori Dango probably three times over. Still better than the Taiwanese and Korean versions, in my opinion.

I've been wanting to make time for the new Death Note drama, too, because I liked the original movies more than the anime or manga.

Yaaay! I'm really glad you liked them! And thank you for letting me know Parasyte Part 2 is out - been waiting so long to watch it xD

omggggg! Yes that's Ninomiya Kazunari who played Kurono Kei in GANTZ. Fantastic actor that man is. I knew he voiced Korosensei for the live, but I didn't think about the possibility of him actually acting the role of well... spoilers xD

But seriously though, Narimiya Hiroki?!? Goddddd he's such a brilliant actor, I did not expect him to be in this film let alone be the role that he's playing. Kiritani Mirei is also a huge yay!

Yaaay! More wild jdrama fans appearing xD Hana Yori Dango and Hana Kimi were two of my first jdramas too! Although I think it was the Kimi ni Todoke movie which was my absolute first.

Gosh Yamada-Kun took to being my favorite for a while. It came out earlier than the anime, so when I watched that, the anime itself felt a bit stale... I guess? I didn't like the anime as much as the drama, half of which I just ended up liking the characters in the live more than the anime (especially Miyamura - the bromance between him and Yamada felt a lot stronger). Yamada is played by Yamamoto Yusuke - the same guy who did Kayashima from HanaKimi too!

AssClass I haven't watched it, but apparently a lot of people have liked it even after watching the anime which is probably a good sign!

Can't remember much about Paradise Kiss aside that I did enjoy it and so did a lot of people! Yamamoto Yusuke is it in xD I swear he's in so many things I've watched haha. I probably will have a rewatch sometime soon.

The new Death Note drama I'm really annoyed I haven't had time to watch it. I've heard it's pretty good, but there are a few people who didn't like it because of how L was played - more or less I've heard mentioned they tried to do a different take on how to play L. Aside from that, I've heard really good things about the 2015 drama series, and that people who watched the original movies will probably like it. Only problem is that apparently that the ending sucks, but I guess we'll see when we actually do watch it haha.

I did watch Assasination Classroom's movie a few days ago. It wasn't outstanding but it was a fun ride. If you're planning to read the manga anytime soon first watch the anime/read the manga, because the movie will spoil some stuff for you. If you don't just go for it.

I CAN SEE THAT MUCH.

As I said above I'm not really good at this, but I would like to watch something that can change my mind. Any suggestions? I'd rather stick to romance/sci-fi, but to be honest, anything can be better than my current idea of J-Live-Actions.
