What attracts you to a game?

What is the main feature that will make you want to buy the game? Its interesting plot, the multiplayer, the graphics, nostalgia -- what exactly!? Terrible sentence structure aside, what made you want to play a game like Skyrim, Fallout or even Pokemon (ew)?

I've noticed that the games I've spent the most time playing were the games that had great, multiplayer that drove me to keep playing the game even after I had beaten the story. For example, I am competitive; AW's multiplayer may not have been super good but the aspects of clans and being the best made me want to keep playing. Same with the Smash Bros. series back in the day! Don't get me wrong, I love games like GTA, Pokemon and Fallout but I rarely buy games because I can beat them in 2 days and then there's nothing much more to do afterwards.

Broadly speaking, I really like games that let me build up from scratch. Survival games are one of my favorite genres ever because it's so satisfying to start with nothing but sticks and stones then slowly build my base into a fortified home with everything I need. "Building up" can also mean my own character, so I also love RPGs where I can build my stats and skills, train and refine my character into exactly who I want them to be.

I also love games where I can feed my hoarding habits. :P So a lot of RPGs and survival games falls under this as well - any game where I can collect/earn things and money and then use those things and money to buy/build/grow more things until I have way more things than I need.

An interesting art style also gets my attention. The "realistic" graphics most AAA games go for these days is pretty boring to me simply because there's so much of it everywhere and I tend to gloss over those in stores, but any game that has a different/quirky/colorful art style catches my eye instantly.

I think what attracts me is the style of gameplay. Sound also matters here as well as the quality of music. Graphics do NOT matter; you can't cover a burned cake with whipped cream.

One thing I hate the most and doesn't attract me to the game at all "not actual game footage" well I might as well turn up with "not actual money to buy it".

Something that plays and feels right for me. Which strangely varies from game type to game type... (can't stand companion/automatic AI in JRPGs, but I don't mind them at all in Western RPGs... yet I'm an MMO player, where I have ZERO control over my team).

Huge bonus if it has a good storyline.

Don't care about graphics. Not really attracted to the indie style, but it won't stop me from giving those games a shot.

Pretty much the usual features:

- Gameplay Concept and Design

- Character Designs

- Box Art and other promotional art materials = Yep, as much as Box Arts are usually the most on-surface thing, thereby the easiest to judge a game for, there are people who often underestimate the value of good box art that some games that are really good but didn't sell well because the box art wasn't attractive enough. Then there are games whose box arts are so appealing that I had no choice but to buy them. Magna Carta being one example because oh boy, its the game i bought because the box art and the art materials caught me so off guard.

- Control = I often playtest games that i buy off from friends before i make the deals since I don't want to end up playing a game that I can't bear playing because of god-awful controls or control mechanics that do not make sense.
