I'm not talking about your characters, I mean you! There is a vast variety of games and genres out there that require different skills to do well in - for example, I'm absolutely terrible at anything that requires platforming, quick reflexes and my aim is pretty bad, but I tend to do a lot better in games that involve strategizing, planning things out and managing resources.

How about you? What kind of games would you say you're best at? Which ones are you worst at?

All I can think of is what I'm bad at really =/
I've never been a terribly good shot, I believe I have a slightly below average reaction time, and I don't think I ever really do well when it comes to things requiring planning/deep thought/strategy.

If I practice enough and I pay enough attention I have great reflexes when it comes to fighting games. I guess this helps me out a little in platformers too.

I perform great when I play games that give me time to think.
My weakness is planning actively, thus RTS and MOBAs aren't my thing at all.

I'm not terribly good at dodging insanely fast projectiles. Slower ones I can handle just fine, but I'm awful at dodging something going a million miles a second in a bullet hell game or a game like Undertale that requires you to be able to dodge fast moving projectiles in the later levels. It especially bites me in the rear with Touhou because I can't get out of the way fast enough so I end up going through all my lives and bombs. I can just barely get to Stage 6 Yuuka in Touhou: Lotus Land Story before my resources finally give out. It doesn't help that I can't really handle projectiles going in random directions either, because Reimu in that game likes to use giant ones that spew everywhere and bounce off the walls...

On the plus side though I'm ok with timing and with dodging things that aren't going hideously fast. I'm also pretty ok with RPGs in general, though I've never really played any FPS games or really any games besides Minecraft and Mabinogi that involve multiplayer...

I've noticed over the years that I am best at fighting games, and recently shooting games (particularly FPSs). Yeah, even the 2D fighters I can beat most of the people I play after I've had the game for a short while, and the same is for "sandbox" fighters like Smash Bros., Jumper Ultimate Stars, Playstation All Stars, etc. While fighters aren't my favorite type of games, I gravitate towards them a lot because of my skill in them. Idk what it is, maybe fast reflexes?

I used to be bad at shooters, but after playing nothing but shooting games over the fun for many hours a day (particularly in June when all I did was work or play games with my clan) I developed the skills to be good at them. I don't know what it is now, if it's like reflexes or that I'm better at aiming but even in games like GTA I can shoot things down easily.

However, I am god awful at stealth and not that good at RPGs. Games like Metal Gear Solid I cannot play because I jsut don't have the patience. I'm honestly surprised I am able to get hough Arkham Knight because a big part of that game is being stealthy when I just want to jump in and knockout all of the enemies quick. I just don't have patience in games! That is why I also cannot play strategy games seriously because I have to kill the big boss ASAP and that's normally not how these games work. That's why I wouldn't play an RPG until I was like 14. I tried to play Final Fantasy X on PS2 when I was like 12 and just couldn't.

I've always been really good at RPGs and strategy type games, sometime without even trying. idk. But I'm terrible at platformers and especially first-person view games. I love platformers and play them anyway, but I just don't have the reflexes and skill for them I guess. And then I don't touch first-person games usually because they're mainly disorienting for me and I have no idea how to move or do anything. lol

Literally me, there's a lot of first-person games I want to get into but I just can't get used to the view - there's a few games I do play in first-person anyway, but in general, I tend to get lost easier and I just can't navigate very well in them, lol. If there's an option to switch to third-person I always do that, makes it a little easier.

I'm terrible at timing in games like Marion&Luigi and rhythm games (even though I really like the former), my reflexes are bad, it takes me 3 seconds to realize what's going on in Smash Bros and my aim leaves quite something to be desired. What I am good at are games without time limits, RPGs where I can take my time to consider my next move.

I really dont think I have much strengths tbh i'd say i'm fairly average at most things, I can complete the main story but not anywhere near good enough for multiplayer on anything,

I struggle with shooters as I don't have quick reflexes and I have a horrible aim which sucks as I do enjoy playing them.

Not very good at platformers either because I have a hard time judging distance for jumps and stuff.
Anything with difficult combos like fighting games i'm not quick enough for either.

Games i'm best at ones you can take your time at like gathering resources, completing objectives to unlock stuck etc.

I'm horrendous at fighting games. Seriously...I tend to just resort to button mashing and I don't have the patience to learn every single character, their moves, combos, etc. And they're just not that enjoyable to me.

I'm a little bit better at shooters than I used to be, but I still usually wind up having negative K/D and I still get frustrated really quickly in games like Battlefront. I've gotten better at Halo and I've been playing 5 a bit recently and doing okay-ish at times, and I was doing really well at Titanfall when I was playing that (I'd probably be terrible if I booted it up again now)...but overall I'm mediocre at shooters. Which sucks, because I really do enjoy them.

Also platformers. I just don't have the reflexes or the patience to be great at them, and oftentimes I find them frustrating beyond belief. Not to say I don't enjoy them - Tropical Freeze was my #3 game of 2013 and Shovel Knight was in my top 10 as well. But there's always a string of expletives coming from me when I'm entrenched in a platformer.

As far as strengths go...being a musician, I'm pretty good at rhythm games since I have a decent sense of rhythm. I'm also pretty decent at strategy and simulation games like SimCity/The Sims/tycoon games.

I'm not terribly good with managing/distributing stats in games with point distribution systems. I usually just dump everything into one category and hope for the best. I'm also not very good with difficult puzzles and most games that require deep strategy. And I'm TERRIBLE in every fighting game except SSB. Combos are difficult for me.

I'm really good with rhythm games, though. And I have pretty good reflexes, so I usually do well in shooters and platformers, or action-y games that require fast thinking.

I'm good at things like final fantasy which just require you to go around and fight things without much effort or real strategy barring boss fights. I'm pretty **** at everything else. KD ration in most shooting games teeters over the 1:1 mark. Some matches I get better KD, but then the next match I'll get 1 kill and die 15 times. Any game that involves any sort of luck I'm pretty bad with, or fighting games that require you to perform combos. If it's something like Dynasty Warriors though I'm not too bad at it though I do struggle with the hard or extreme difficulties.

I'm good with RPGs and slightly good with platformers. Anything about First-person shooter or games require using bit of your brain that's my weak point at it

I do great at rhythm games. It's just in my blood I guess; I'm musically-oriented and getting beats down is relatively easy for me. I consider myself to be a good player at MMORPGs and well, RPGs in general. I learn mechanics quickly, so as long as I get decent practice in raids and the gear that follows, I don't have problems. Problems do rise, however, when I'm learning - it really doesn't take me much for anxiety issues to pop in, but after a run or two in a new instance, I'm usually fine with either the area, or the team.

I'm a decent-ish fighter? The reason I can't string any combos is because I don't treat them as seriously as I do with MMORPGs, so I don't train over and over. I understand the lingo, I understand the mechanics, but I just need more practice applying them.

I suck, however, at aiming. FPS games are the bane of my gamer life, and I don't enjoy too many of them.

There is no knowledge that is not power.

I'm decent at games that require fast reaction times and decision making like MOBAs and fighters. I say decent, since I get the basics down very quickly, but I really struggle to get a grasp on the more advanced mechanics of the game. I try, and slowly pick up on them, but it's a struggle and I have yet to get really good at a game of either genre.

One genre that I'm really good at is puzzle. I love puzzles, and figuring out the mechanics of Portal and getting really good at it was so rewarding. If there's ever a competitive puzzle game, watch out, haha.

Two genres that I can't seem to grasp are shooters and RTS. The only shooter I've ever liked is Mass Effect, and that was because of the characters. RTS are just too aggressive for me. Whenever I play one, I always end up wanting to see how big and efficient my base can be, and I often forget to build a big army to crush people.

I have what Lindybeige describes as a 'skirmish skill', ie. the ability to recognise the flow of a battle and react accordingly. I have poor reactions and average technical skill, and my capacity for planning is limited by my ADD-inhibited concentration. The only games I feel really good at are the Total War series and World of Tanks/Warships, where an assessment of relative force strengths and unit positioning are important. I'm bad at fighters, rhythem games, what I would consider fast-paced RTS (AOE, Warcraft, Starcraft), and RPGs (in terms of understanding stat interactions and planning an effective build, which is basically all the thought that goes into the MMO kind).
RPGs are my forte. Probably because that's pretty much all I play, and there aren't that many different types of battle system out there...once you've played it once, it's pretty easy to pick it up again in another game. RPGs don't require much skill anyway for the most part, just a lot of patience. With the exception of SO4's battle trophies (for now) I've yet to find an RPG that has exhausted my patience entirely and been too difficult for me.

...well, Demons Souls took my five years, Resonance of Fate took me two, and I'm putting off Bloodborne for the moment - and SAO: Hollow Fragment's tedium has put me off it entirely - but they're only temporary setbacks. It's a matter of pride that no RPG is too difficult for me, because god knows I have to be good at SOMETHING. xD

I'm also pretty good at action-adventure games...not Vanquish-level good - well, not quite; I can finish the game on Hard, but Tactical Challenger is probably forever going to be out of my reach, and I'll never do the Dunwall City Trials in Dishonored - but good enough to blaze through most of the ones I play with minimal difficulty. I might scream a little at time trials and occasionally struggle with tricky jumps, but otherwise they're pretty easy. For older side-scrolling games I learn the patterns fairly quickly so I don't find those overly difficult either once I've died a few times and seen the layout of the level.

I suck at any kind of sports game, puzzle games, and arcade fighting games. Unsurprisingly, I hate all three of those genres with a passion, except for the odd title here and there which I'm fairly good at. Most people would say I'm crap at first person shooters too, but that's only because I camp and I'm an excellent shot. It's just good strategy. It's not MY fault they can't find me and I'm so good at scoring headshots on moving targets. Running into battle all-guns blazing is just asking to get shot, and I play to shoot other people, not get shot myself, if I play at all. If they weren't so crap I wouldn't keep killing them so easily and efficiently. Sore losers. All of them. Ha.

  • I have quick reflexes, pretty good memory, and I'm a good shot - so there's Shooters, Fighters, Action/Hack'n'Slash, and Platformers.
  • Tack on "resource management" to that last one and you've got my beloved Survival Horror games.
  • I can both think on my feets and plan ahead; and react accordingly - so there's a variety of Strategy games, 4X/RTS/TBS/Tower Defense
  • And I have the patience for walking sims, so I'm pretty good at Stealth games and stealth sections in games. I actually prefer the latter to the former; I love it when I get a stealth section in an FPS, but after awhile of playing something like Dishonored.. I know it's time for a break:
Spoiler:

I'm okay at puzzle games -- growing up on King's Quest games has basically left me with a special facility for illogical puzzles. On the other hand, it'll take me awhile to get it if it actually makes sense because I never expect them to apply common sense. "Oooh, the stick becomes the fishing rod! - not the banana. Okay."

  • Despite how well I can manage resources in other games, I have a lot of difficulty with straight-up Survival games. My boyfriend is so good at them without even trying, and when I try to play with him, we both end up dead, lol. I think I was only good at ARK: Survival Evolved because we had pretty awesome dinosaurs and we started out at an ideal location for food, water, and other resources.
  • I have the worst luck ever - whether it's RNG or actual dice/cards - so board games, card games, even rogue-likes.. I love them so much, but I'm pretty garbage at them. (lookin' at you, Mario Party. I will always land on every Bowser and Happening space. Without fail.)
  • I am terrible at rhythm games that don't have a visible metronome to follow along with (I may as well be tone-deaf)
  • Shmups/Bullet Hells and I will never be friends. I don't know why, I just can't get the hang of them. The only one I was ever good at was The Guardian Legend on the NES, and I was like 6. :P

I wouldn't say that I have a very high opinion of myself towards playing multiplayer video games but in the case of playing MOBAS or Multiplayer Online Battle Arenas, i would say that I can quickly learn how to be competent at those games since i've played them throughout my current gaming lifespan. Just the whole feeling of controlling a singular hero unit and doing stuff from that hero's skillset to help win, carry, prevent tilt, inspire others to carry or try harder, and all that while making great use of the game knowledge is something i really enjoy.

Then there's Action RPGs, such as Path of Exile and Diablo, that I really enjoy playing because of the awesome loads of theorycrafting and math crafting involved when it comes to making up a certain build that can help carry a certain character into late game, while avoiding the dangers of the PVM environment.

I would say that I'm pretty bad at sports games because I simply do not enjoy them. The only "sports" games that i thought i was really good at a certain point were the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games and Matt Hoffman's Pro BMX spinoffs but I find them hard to categorize as "sports" games.

In my case, the whole gamer strengths and weaknesses comes from my enjoyment of the game genres, the games themselves, and the things being done in the game. Anything that involves the use of game-knowledge and furnishing said gained knowledge into practical use becomes something that I hold well within my fingertips. MOBAS, Action RPGs, RTS, FPShooters, and the Pro Skater games are some games that have a lot of game knowledge to study, make good use out of, and practice into pulling off some mechanics.
